Aqua Manda was by Goya - I had that one too.
Also remember wearing Babe, & a friend who used to love Rapport.

Maybe look at Gres Cabaret - can be had really cheap. Dry woody rose (if you don't mind rose). Very "clean" not at all powdery - imho.
Night scented stock
Fete de Molyneux
They're all vintage, the Fete & LeDe originally belonged to my Mum.
I thought Samsara was reformulated when the lettering of Samsara on the bottles changed from normal "SAMSARA" to
look more like "S A M S A R A". Also (I think) a bottle from 1998 would definately...
Acqua de Parma Mandorlo di Sicilia.
Commes des Garcons 2 has an ink note, perhaps it was that (don't know about ginseng though, as I have never smelled it)
Yes agree- lovely frag. I think it is listed in the BN directory as Prada New (or something like that). I also read somewhere that it's not marketed as Prada Amber in every country, but in some...
You can get it from Harrods on-line :-)
+1 Angel, or Prada Candy
Aww, this is so harsh - I love Nahema !! - & this description actually reminded me of YSL Paris :-)
I don't think there is anything specific which makes something "old lady" tho'
The ones that...
sorry - double post
Over many years (I am old !)
Chanel No 5
Terracotta Voile d'Ete
D&G (red cap)
How about Donna Karan's Essence Wenge then, & maybe CdG Wonderwood may be worth a try too ?
I think she might enjoy Bulgari Omnia (the original brown bottle), it's a really nice frag for cooler weather & it's not heavy either. And I love Tocade too !
I've noticed the exact same thing as the op & after checking note pyramids of my own "offenders", I think that my problem is something to do with vetiver. Not vetiver alone, but vetiver when combined...
I think you might like Commes De Garcons (original EDP), CdG Wonderwood & from Donna Karan re-issues range: Essence Wenge, Signature, & Chaos (Chaos does have some fruit, but it's not celebscent...
That may be so, but a fragrance can conjure all kinds of seemingly unlikely impressions & "vibes". Surely that is the beauty & mystery of perfumery.
Please can anyone provide an update about Galaxy, any recent orders or problems etc ?
- they have something I really want that I can't find anywhere else, but I am a little worried about ordering...
I think it may have been Houbigant Musk - the packaging was black with male/female symbols in white on it. I had an oil in it & it also was available as a spray edt or edp.
I asked an SA for L'Heure Bleue & she said "I've never heard of it, it's probably been discontinued" ! We then moved on to the Chanel counter & she followed. My son picked up a tester of Pour...
It could possibly be one particular note that they both have in common that you are focussing on. Perhaps if you do a direct side by side comparison, spray Aventus on one wrist & Attitude on the...
Well, it was just a suggestion & fwiw my perception of HR BC/EDP (call it what you will) is obviously different to yours - it's all subjective:-) Beau Cavalier is also available very cheaply from...
Habit Rouge Beau Cavalier (or Habit Rouge EDP) might be worth a try. Contains rose, patchouli & (quite prominent) oud.
Hah, does this rec smell like sour grapes...
+1 for Daim Blond, & also Donna Karan Reisues range - Signature or Fuel for Men
:smiley:I layered a carnation body butter with a patchouli edt - & I got a compliment
Well, years ago it was Opium & nowadays it's Allure. I don't think it's anything to do with the actual smell of them tho, but more about my impression of the people who wore them.
Sailim, you should have confidence & faith in your own choices. If you like it & feel comfortable wearing, then go ahead & buy a bottle, it's irrelevant what anyone else thinks as you will always get...
I think the bottle label is also an indicator - earlier ones just say "Shalimar" & later one's have "parfum" at the top "Shalimar" in the middle & "Guerlain" "Paris" at the bottom.
I have one that...
Another smoker here - + 1 agree with EL Knowing & Tabac Blond. I'd also like to suggest Guerlain's Chamade. A beautiful floral that seems to react well with my smokers chemistry.
On reflection, I...
This is interesting. Imho it's about current popular trends - a lot of classic/older scents are described (& often dismissed) as "old lady" simply because they don't fall into the sugared fruity...
Yes, I blind buy (after research) bottles that I see on-line cheap. None are truly bad, but I should forego say, 5 of these type of buys, & instead put the money towards 1 bottle of something...
Yes thank you, I have smelt Coromandel - I have a decant from TPC. It definately smells similar to the Patchouli heavy Prada, & I'm pretty sure it is Prada Amber. No doubt if I am wrong someone will...
Prada Amber/Chanel Coromandel
SL Un Bois Vanille
New West Skin Scent for Her, hope I still like it as much as in the early 90's, & also added Jacomo Arts Collection #2 - just because it was cheap, & I'm curious :-)
Another +1 for C'Est la Vie!, also Lancaster's original EDP (in the black box), Avon Casbah, & most of all Guerlain's Terracotta Viole D'Ete & Meteorites.
Blimey ! After smelling that combo they're probably semi-concious, & therefore not in fit state to resist even if they wanted to !
L'Air du Desert Marocain is imho - & although I do like it, it's not my favourite perfume :-)
All the Guerlain classics are worth trying - & sometimes something you think is prob not your style, ends up as another new love !
I voted for "would rather buy something else" - I prefer Kiehls Original Musk to MR, both on a man & on myself.
If you specifically want a musk why not order samples of say MKK, Musc Rav & Kiehls...
+ 1 for Terracotta Voile d'Ete & also Donna Karan Gold.
I agree. Used to own this & imho it's a huge, very rich & sort of "plush" scent. Not easy to wear but if available for a good price, I would buy it. I liked it & don't agree with Luca Turin on this...
Iris Silver Mist - "swimming pool"
Shalimar EDP - "Cadbury's Mini Eggs"
Apres L'Ondee - "smells like money" that was from the person who paid for it :-)
I don't get many compliments !
+ 1 for Nahema - according to (I think) Luca Turin it doesn't actually contain any real rose, so for that reason it might behave differently on your skin.
Commes des Garcons frags fit what I would define as "hip"
True we all interpret "hip" differently & 1 Million is too mainstream to be hip imho :-)
Oh thank you Venus, it was very upsetting at the time. On the upside, it was a long time ago & I've more than made up for it with my collection since then ;-)
They're safer stashed away. Some years ago my house was burgled & they took everything that was out on display but "missed" the scents that I had stashed in a cupboard. Sorry to sound like a doom...
Agree ! It's about time the tide turned - sick of the endless dirth of fruity/candy/vanilla combo's :-)
Hope it's as good as it sounds..
+ 1 for the very lovely EDP - As far as I know Nu has been discontinued, so for that reason I don't think you need worry about getting a fake.
Edit to add, I don't find it similar to Black Orchid...
What a stunning collection. Thank you for posting - I really enjoyed looking at all those exquisite bottles :-)
The Reissues are great. Signature is my favourite, closely followed by Chaos, Essence Wenge & Black Cashmere. Wenge is a lot like BC, but not quite as complex. They're all very unisex imo.
I think Serge Lutens Daim Blond would be a good choice.
Dolce & Gabbana original (with the red cap) - old favourite & have just rebought, am liking this a lot at the mo:-))
Imho it's not really suitable for layering with something different (sacrilege !)
Maybe it's just not for you ?
I liked (& bought) Breath of God a few weeks ago, also thought Imogen Rose was nice (reminded me of Nahema) Would like to try The Smell of Weather Turning but my nearest Lush shop doesn't have it.
Mugler Miroir des Envies (by Christine Nagel & Louise Turner) gourmand/jasmine frag is super
This is hard -Jean Paul Guerlain & Maurice Roucel or perhaps Alberto Morillas.
I don't think I like anything by Sophia Grojsman tho !
I was given a sample of this "floral oriental" yesterday & I'm pleasantly surprised. Am going to give it a full wearing today. There is only one (positive) review in Basenotes directory so far....
The suggestion is there, but blink & you miss it - I had to watch it twice (sad person that I am)!
They were right to ban it, but it should have been on the grounds of it's mammoth embarrassing...
Perhaps patchouli ?
I'm no expert on layering, but there are unisex rose/patchouli scents around - like Voleur de Roses for example.
How about Donna Karan Black Cashmere
A mini (10ml) of Womanity - still not sure about it, but it will stop me from compulsively sniffing the tester every time I see it, plus I love the bottle.
Also an old favourite, Dolce & Gabbana (in...
A lovely violet was Guerlain Meteorites, if you can still get it (sadly I can't where I live!)
I agree about Coty & for that reason it wouldn't surprise me if the GaGa scent ends up being a second rate rip-off of Womanity.
For those in UK - Bulgari Black is available from CheapSmells.com. It is listed under the womens perfume section.
CheapSmells.com in the UK have #8 & #9 at the moment - at discount too !
+1 for L'Heure Bleue
Also Bulgari Blu Notte - I haven't tried it yet (have it on order !) but I remember reading a review somewhere, & it was described as smelling "blue"
+ 1 for Chanel pour Monsieur. It was the first thing I thought of on reading your post. Classy, AND would be great on a young guy, I think. Also a less predictable choice than say, something like Le...
I love Baldufita's story - I badly want some No 5 extrait too !
Just ordered on-line at good prices, Commes des Garcons & Bulgari Blu Notte.
The Bulgari is a blind buy that I just like the...
Hi Kewart, yep, definately not staffroom material ! lol
I also noticed it in the bargain bin at my local branch of The Perfume Shop. It looks like it may discontinued doesn't it, seeing as it's...
Oooh, yes ! I have a bottle of this - got mine nearly as cheaply as yours from TKMaxx & also bought it blind based on the Guide's rec.
I agree that it is skanky - some days I enjoy it, & others it's...
Thierry Mugler - Miroir des Envies (Mirror of Desires)
The marketing blurb describes it as "notes of warm toast & sun kissed /jasmine etc....) I found it to be more like some kind of "posh...
Another + 1 for Apres L'Ondee & Voleur de Roses. Also Dzonkha.
L'Heure Bleue conjures up "cool, clean & calming". I don't find it melancholy :-)
You might like some of the Donna Karan re-issues range. None of these are sugary/foody:
Donna Karan re-issues: Signature (warm, woody, leather), Essence Wenge (woody/creamy), Black Cashmere...
About CheapSmells -It's probably worthwhile to check for the Envy again in a few weeks time. I've noticed things disappear from their listings, & then they pop back up again after a few weeks.
How about Dior Escale a Portofino.
Notes from Fragrantica are: bergamot, petit grain, almond, orange blossom, juniper, cedar, cypress, galbanum, caraway, & musk.
I haven't smelt Island Capri,...
Ordered Dior Escale a Portofino (ready for summer !) & Matthew Williamson Incense (a cheapie bargain)
Can I do tott ?
Bois des Iles
Commes des Garcon
No thanks to Kouros !
Oh ok -sorry about your crap Boots :-)
I have a bottle of Bulgari Black (I don't like it) - if you want it, send me a PM.
Rec to make up a round 10 - Guerlain L'Instant pour Homme
Yes, +1 for The Perfumed Court for those unavailable in local shops.
Are you any where near a local Boots ? - most of those would be found be in a decent sized Boots. I know it's not the same as...
Burberry Brit Red (rhubarb/ginger) - I think was a limited edition but is available cheaply from on-line etailers.
I got a bargain, 75ml Shalimar EDP reduced to £25 in TKMaxx & also a cute mini of L'Occitane Labdunum de Seville.
I'm hoping the newer Shalimar will be a little lighter & less smoky than my old...
I would say wear it whenever you feel like it & enjoy it ! You can always ask for a refill for future Christmas/birthday presents.
Clinique "Even Better" foundation might be worth a try. I have similar skin type & age as you & this one suits me. Also, the consultants will decant samples for you into tiny jars, so that you can...
Shortly after Guerlain Terracotta Voile d'Ete disappeared from the shops here in the UK, I dropped & smashed my last bottle in the toilet at work. It was still half full & I almost cried - thinking...
Another + 1 for L'Instant - it's lovely !
Yes, my 2 favourites are Habit Rouge & AMen, which I find easier to wear & much nicer on me than Angel
TM Angel, JPG Classique, Chanel Allure & Hypnotic Poison. I also think possibly YSL Rive Gauche (esp amongst older scent wearers)
+1 for Coco or Eau Premiere.
I don't think an 18 year old would appreciate No5. I know a 28 year old who turned her nose up at a gift of No5 saying it's "old lady" perfume. I don't agree, but then...
Your story reminds me of when I dislocated my elbow. As the ambulance crew wheeled me into the hospital the paramedic said to me "I have to ask you this, what perfume are you wearing ?, I think it...
I agree with the article too, but there is some interesting stuff still to be found. It's just the sheer volume of non-descript "pink & frilly" stuff that is irritating.
I don't bother trying most...
I've only sampled a handful (they're not stocked in the shops where I live)
Of those, the only one I really liked a lot was Bois du Portugal.
Maybe one of the more modern Guerlains then - L'Instant is really nice.
No, not any 1 scent, but if the house of Guerlain ceased to exist I think it would affect my interest in a big way. Of what I own, the ones I really love are mostly Guerlain, & without them it just...
M7 or CdG Wonderwood
Long ago my mother used to wear Fidji, Youth Dew, & something called Kiku ? that I remember came in a bright yellow bottle.
My dad had Old Spice too, but never wore it.
So many Old Spicer's here !
Whoops ! - please ignore me. Its Prada L'Eau Ambre that smells like Infusion d'Iris, not Amber.
Prada Amber is the one with the big patchouli note. Similar to it is Chanel Coromandel :-)
Yes, me too, I find them very similar & was also going to suggest trying the Infusion d'Iris
