28 La Pausa by Chanel
Malizia is smokier than any other vetiver I've ever smelled. I can't think of a scent that even comes close. Shame it's been reformulated as it was quite unique.
By the way, here is a link
Has anyone ever heard of this? I just picked up a bottle in Key West and love it. It is very much in the Slumberhouse style albeit at a lower price point. I have a feeling that it is non-IFRA...
Philosykos for my partner
Terre d'Hermes for my nephew
Chanel Eau de Cologne for my sister
Cambouie for my best friend
Journaliste for his wife
Rose for my sisters bestie
and an assortment of...
I just returned from Key West with some news for fumeheads. There are three or four shops like Perfumania on Duval St., but the best shops are harder to find. First, check out Radiant Spa and...
Chanel's Eau de Cologne
I think Bois d'Ombrie by Eay d'Italie and Cumming by Christopher Brosius both feature Okoumal, so give them a sniff and see what you think.
Kourose - the original Kouros, with a huge, dark rose in the middle and extra animal goodies in the base, rounded off with some real sandalwood.
lol. I purchased a labdanum fraction from Perfumer Supply House called Ambrarome. It is intense, dark, smoky, and quite wonderful.
I think perhaps Norne by Slumberhouse
Don't forget to try a classic eau de cologne preparation. There is nothing like a great eau.
Just this summer I had an expensive bottle of ADP Leather stolen from my bag on the short flight from Chicago to Louisville, KY. I saw that my bag was unzipped, checked, and noticed the theft. I...
I have always thought of anise as dark blue.
It only took one squirt for me to go FB on this baby.
Sephora is really pushing this, so I smell it every time I go there. I don't think I would characterize this as generic, but it is more manstream than many Guerlain fragrances. I wore it out of the...
I can't be the only Basenoter here in Louisville. I am interested in starting a group of fragrance addicts who want to sample, critique, make, share, and generally discuss fragrances. If you are in...
I have a container of isophorone. It is listed as "prohibited" on the perfumer search site. Does anyone know more about this? If it really is prohibited is it safe to dispose of or should it be...
Hermes - Un Jardin en Mediterrennea has a beautiful fig note
Sometimes mistakes turn into happy accidents. I still experience FOOOOOOO! quite often.
Just this weekend I was sitting at a table next to a lovely young lady who smelled incredible. The fragrance wafted by for the entire meal. I was in heaven. As she was getting up to leave I...
I'm a chypre guy myself.
Today at Ross got:
Kanon K.O. - 6.99 - totally generic but easy for office
Azzaro Homme Night Time - 19.99 - fruity, woody, ok, but not like the original
The first time I wore it I couldn't wait to get home and wash it off. But, I couldn't stop thinking about it. About a year later i sniffed it at a Lush outlet and was hooked. It is quite unique...
I loved it in the 80's. The reformulation was pretty pathetic.
I love it too. It's sweeter than many current incense frags but beautiful and comfortable.
These sound great. Where are they available for purchase?
Many fragrances came to mind while listening to this. What a neat opportunity. Thanks.
While it's very difficult to beat Jonathan at Barney's for customer service, I have had three very pleasant visits to Jacquelines and have always left with a unique scent. Don't believe all the...
I found Les Notes de Lanvin Vetiver Blanc at the TJ Maxx here in Louisville. Also $12.99. I bought it blind and not too impressed yet. Very generic. Will give it a couple more wears though to see...
I find Black is Black to be quite irritating. It begins with some imaginary citrus candy odor and ends on a cheap pleather gob. Unattractive at every point.
I would go with:
I love Perfume - The Guide and because of it I have tried many wonderful fragrances. I think LT is a great opportunity for me to learn and develop my own critical abilities. I also love the reviews...
I agree. Bolster the base with civet, castoreum, costus, deer musk. Add the merest hint of immortelle and ivy in the mid section, and load up the aldehydes on top. Yippee!
I gave my father the whole Nine Flags set for his birthday one year long ago. He never used them, but I used to sniff them all the time. I remember Manzanilla as a sweet, pulpy citrus. A very...
No. It is still the modern blue box but a 2001 batch number.
I noticed that there are some perfumers in Grasse of whom I've never heard. Do any of you have experience with the perfumes of either Guy Bouchara or Didier Gaglewski? Gaglewski's website boasts...
I recently found a bottle of Diorella, intact in box, with a batch number for 2001 at a store called Perfumes Plus for $50.00. It is glorious.
I will be visiting Grasse this summer. This makes me even more excited. I love Apres L'Ondee.
Mitsouko by Guerlain. It starts off peachy but dries down into a solid chypre that, I believe, would provide an excellent counterpoint to the tattoos, piercings, and leather of your appearance. Fun...
I've been wearing Zizanie since the 70's.
Why can't perfumes carry a warning label like so many other products in our economy? It would be simple and protect the perfumer from liability suits. Something like: "This perfume contains...
I find Spicebomb similar to Carbone by Balmain but much prefer Carbone which is not as cloying but richer.
I love Vitriol d'Oiellet by Lutens
I don't get any leather, perhaps a touch of smoke. The vanilla is anything but typical on my skin. Very dry with a bit of plastic and an animalic edge. The first wearing was difficult, but...
They came out as a group of three. Yes they are Etro. It could be Raving, Resort, or Relent (?).
Thanks for the info. La Bastide Saint-Antoine looks amazing.
Kolnisch Juchten by Parfums Regence
Peau d'Espagna by Santa Maria Novella
I will be visiting Grasse this summer and as well as doing everything a tourist would do (Fragonard, Molinard, Galimard, Perfume Museum) I was wondering if there were any hidden gems. This includes...
I've never worn Angel, but after reading this thread I am driving to Sephora and spritzing some on. The same thing happens when I read recipes online. I have to eat immediately.
Oakmoss by Parfums Regence is linear, strong and wonderful but devilishly hard to find. I got mine at Jacqueline's in San Francisco.
I find it has a slight mildew quality as well.
You have a beautiful, compact collection. I might add:
Mitsouko - Guerlain
Jubilation 25 - Amouage
No. 19 - Chanel
If they have screw-on atomizers or glass dabbers I clean them and fill them with my own creations. If they have a crimp top I just cry over them moaning "Why Why?"
My parents had some great scents, and I was given some good scents as well, but the first scent I actually bought for myself was Zizanie by Fragonard.
Thank you for your recommendations. My mouth is watering, or is that my nose? (Yuck) At any rate I can't wait to sample some of these. Happy New Year everyone.
I find that Peau d'Espagne by Santa Maria Novella and Dans Tes Bras by Frederic Malle ring these bells for me.
Cabaret by Gres is a light incense rose. Rose Poivree by the Different company is richer and more intense. But, I love Rose 31 anytime, anywhere.
Thank you for this fascinating series of articles. It certainly is inspiring to see sustainable practices used in the service of fragrance materials. I'm curious to know if there are any other...
Anice may be my favorite anise scent. It is simply anise. Not much window decoration and fairly linear. If she loves anise this is a great choice.
I don't want to compete with the food, so I am wearing Santal Noble by MPG. It is rich, beautiful but wears close to the skin so I can enjoy it without interfering with the feast.
What an amazing scent. I am wearing it the day before Thanksgiving here in the USA, and I can't escape the sage, nutmeg (not listed) and citrus. These are traditional smells fir this celebration,...
Dr. Who perfume articles are cool!
It took me twenty years to enjoy any perfume that featured galbanum prominently. And I used to think aldehydes were only invented to confuse me. Luckily, my persistence combined with the magic of...
It scared me when I first sprayed it on, but now I love it. I prefer it in the autumn though.
What are the prices??
Chanel - Bleu, Platinum Egoiste, Pour Monsieur Concentree, anything that says Allure
I am heading to a Derby party in five minutes, and I figured every guy there would be wearing Derby, so I chose Invasion Barbare. May the odds be ever in your favor.
Pour Monsieur (regular)
Eau de Cologne
Reflection is beautiful but confuses me. I find Ciel to be a more direct and cogent expression of a fragrance idea.
Years ago, in Georgia, I played around with some of the bright red berries that come out of the pods. They also have a very unique scent. I macerated them and tinctured them then moved away and...
100 ml Iris Poudre by Fredric Malle - $35.00
You obviously have great facility with a huge variety of ingredients and styles, but is there any ingredient that has given you trouble consistently?
+1 Bulgari pour Homme
also Tokyo by Kenzo
OMG Paul. Thanks for the extensive DEP list. You rock.
Welcome to Basenotes. I look forward to hearing about fragrance trends in your part of the world.
Cologne Pour le Soir - MFK
Iris de Nuit - Heeley
Jubilation 25 - Amouage
I have always preferred B*Men to A*Men. It has a faint liqorice vibe with an herbal (sage?) sheen. I have worn it at work, home and play. I have never received any commemts on it as it wears...
I have yet to find a Jo Malone that I would buy, but hope springs eternal.
I prefer the Etro.
I like Trilipiderm. They have their own site online and can be found on Amazon.
Solinotes Musc smells like Jujubees if that helps.
a muzak version of Paint it Black. Clever boy.
L'Occitane offered three verveine colognes last summer. All were fairly simple but quite nice and very refreshing. Heeley also offers a beautiful rendition of verveine.
I reached in and pulled out Aficionado by Cigar Aficionado. It's supposed to be a tobacco scent, but I find it very herbal
Where can DEP be purchased?
PM'd about S-ex.
In the Chanel Exclusifs line both 31 Rue Cambon and 28 La Pausa are stunners.
Chanel No. 5 doesn't smell all that good on my skin. But, I love the bottle, the font, the story, the personality of Coco Chanel, etc. I own three bottles. Hype must be my altar.
Wow! That was a great read and actually calmed me down a bit. I was very anti IFRA and EU regulations, but you put it into perspective beautifully. I'm sure the big companies are looking for the...
I can't get it to work either.
Oakmoss by Parfums Regence
I love Etro. I would recommend Palais Jamais, Messe de Minuit, Vetiver and Etra.
I just found two of the Solinotes, Coco and Musc at Urban Outfitters for $9.99 each. I didn't care for the Coco, but the Musc reminds me of Jujubees, one of my favorite candies from my youth. I...
I just found you too. Good job! I like your writing and your videos. You seem very sincere.
You can't go wrong with Cuir de Russie by Chanel.
I spent yesterday going around to the local stores. I found nothing new and almost empty shelves. At Kohls they had run out of smelling strips and had not bothered to replace them. For that...
I could not wear the original version of Dior Homme. It made me sick, but I so wanted to love it. The reformulation is perfect for me. I have no idea what they changed, but I'm glad they did.
Chanel Pour Monsieur
