What's going on with the Basenotes Community?
by Grant Osborne, 23 July 2007
Regular visitors will have noticed that the Basenotes Community has been offline for ust over one month now and may be wondering what is going on.
Due to the fact that the site is receiving more visitors each day, we occaisionally get to the point where our current set-up cannot work properly - In May 2007, the Community got to the stage where 50% of the time is was operational.
Because of this we decided to move to a new server, this time based in the US where most of our visitors are. We began to download the site data to upload to the new server in June, which took far longer than we thought.
The next delay was caused by money not being in the right place at the right time. The new host needed to be paid by Visa or Mastercard - Our Visa card was full, but the Paypal account had the money in. Transfering the money from my Paypal account to my bank account, then to my Visa card took about 7-8 days in total.
Once the new host was paid and contracts signed it should have take them up-to three days to set up the new server. It took longer.
Since then due to receiving wrong information about how to get to my server, and not enough IP addresses to set up nameservers, things still aren't ready. By the end of today I should be able to get a test-domain name to resolve to the new server (it takes 72 for the domain to point to the right place).
Once that works, I can then upload all of the information, images, files, database etc... This will probably take a few days, then once everything is set up, I'll then need to point the basenotes.net domain (which will be another 72 hours).
The other possible delay is that my wife is due to give birth to our second child in the next two weeks, so I'm hoping to get things finished by then (plus the fact that I'm currently paying two lots of expensive hosting is spurring me on too!)
In the meantime, if you are a member of Facebook, I have set up a Basenotes Group on there, which may serve as a replacement until things are set up here.
Thanks for the patience, and see you all soon
Best
Grant
