I endorse this.
I've been thinking about the question. This summer I wore a few different polos - Tommy H, Comme des Garcons Shirt and RL Polo. In each case I wore them alone (well with trousers of course!). Come the autumn and I do struggle with the polo. Can a long sleeve polo be successfully combined with a T shirt? Perhaps. How about worn under a v neck sweater? If the fabrics work together that can be OK.
At the end of the day, the polo started its life as a sports shirt, usually worn alone, and that is still how it works the best.
