Smells like Soap

Thread Starter
There are types of fragrances I associate with soap. And this is not necessarily that soapy feel that some perfume's have. Real soaps can smell very different from this. I'm talking about a smell that reminds me of a perfume used in soap.

Anyway, here is my list so far.

Poison by Christian Dior: Despite it's daring name, this smells to me like liquid hand soap.

Equipage by Hermes: Liquid hand soap, again.

Cologne by Thierry Mugler. This smells very close to a liquid hand soap from my past. Either in school or maybe something I washed my hands with at the doctor's office.

Gendarme by Gendarme. This does not smell like any soap I have tried. But it is in the safe fragrance zone that I think of as soap scents.

Secret Melange by MPG. This is the type of fragrance I associate with a sharp strong soap scent. The old Palmolive soap, and the newer Irish Spring are examples of sharp soap scents.

CdG Odeur 53. Sort of a generic soap scent.

BTW, I'm not saying this is bad. Just something that brings out associations.

Anyone else have fragrances that make them think of soap?

YEAH!!!!

Mugler's Cologne!

Good thread. I don't think it's a negative comment to say a scent smells like soap at all.

I think the original Acqua di Parma has half of it that smells like soap. Also, Diptyque's Olene, which I now decide I'm going to wear tomorrow, smells a lot like high quality soap. The kind scented by white flowers.

Bvlgari pour Homme and the Extreme version both give me a fresh soapy feeling that reminds me of being washed with some kind of soap. I can't make the connection with a specific brand of soap though.

Paco Rabanne PH
Gendarme V
Monsieur Galimard (for the same reason as Equipage)
Acqua di Selva

Claiborne Sport
Tommy T
Chrome
Gendarme
Mugler Cologne
Original Vetiver

Spanish Leather by Trumpers smells like pure soap to me. It's simply too much, unlike Original Vetiver, which smells divine!
This is an interesting one, but I have had 3 people tell me that Body Kouros smells like soap. I still don't get it, but whatever. Whoever mentioned Claiborne Sport is dead on, I think this is a definate soap-ish smell.

To me Oscar for Men smells very much like legendary Imperial Leather soap (Cussons). It`s a fresh and soft leathery scent.
Lanvin L'Homme and Mugler Cologne(of course..)
Someone mentioned to me that Bulgari PH Extreme smelled like soap.

I would also say Paco Rabanne and Uomo Moschino.

For me the ultimate "soap" is Gendarme. More than once wearing it (I love it) I have had people actually ask if I have just taken a shower! As a perfumer, I haven't been able to duplicate it. I've hunted and hunted for that soapy ingredient.... I'd love to ask Topper, but of course I'd never dare.

I don't know but IMHO, I work in a hospital and after some drydown, TM Cologne is absolutely perfect when it comes to soapy....OV is great too, but I don't know, it's got something a little grassier (if that's even a word) and brighter....plus I wore TM Cologne last night and had to reapply twice...not a problem...on the contrary....kind of a nice thing to get the initial blast of TM cologne a few times.

claiborne sport

JPG smells like nasty free hotel soap. :'(
post #18 of 56
Ahhhh yes....Mugler Cologne and Creed Original Vetiver....same bucket here.
Gendarme does it also.
I find a number of colognes reminding me of Imperial Leather soap.....wonder why that is ;-)

Trussardi Uomo might be another soap-like fragrance.

I just tried Jules by Christian Dior. This could be a soap scent.
I remember smelling Duhnill X-Centric @ Marshall's once & it reminded me of Coast soap on the initial blast. I also think that Z Zegna smells like soap.

And I of course concur w/ those who have mentioned Mugler Cologne & Creed OV.

Santa Maria Novella Gold Musk (Muschio Oro) is a slightly spicy musk fragrance that also has a nice soapy note. I like it very much. It is also pretty long-lasting.
There are many. I recently acquired Gucci Nobile and Creed Original Vetiver. Both have a good degree of soapiness.

guerlain vetiver
MikeFromManhattan nailed it; Moschino Uomo? has to be the soapiest fragrance I have ever experienced.
To me, Dior Homme smells an awful ot like your average cream soap (Dove or the like). A generic sort of "cosmetics" smell.
Of those I've tried that smell like soap, Gendarme, and certainly Catherine Memmi: Attitude Homme is very soapy, and even more pleasant than it is soap-like
post #30 of 56
Two vetiver scents - Creed Original Vetiver and Guerlain Vetiver.
I'd pick Mugler Cologne as well, as it was inspired by a soap from Mr. Mugler's childhood.

Oddly enough, the ancillary line includes... you guessed it... A SOAP BAR! (And it's great, too, like all the Mugler ancillary products I've tried.) It's funny... soap that has a fragrance that's supposed to smell like soap. What next... toothpaste that tastes like toothpaste?

Muscio Bianco by Acca Kappa
Moschino Friends maybe (a lemon soap)

When I first posted this topic it was simple curiosity about soap-like scents. But the more I explore this, the more I think this could be the solution for me and summer scents. I am not really into the citrus and aquatic scents. So maybe soap scents could be a nice fresh choice for summer.

Anyway, I just found another one, sort of. It is Castile by Penhaligon's. I'd say it is somewhere between a soap scent and a barber shop scent. Very clean.

Monsieur Galimard
Offrez-lui - Galimard
Equipage - Hermès
Le Mouchoir de Monsieur - Guerlain
L'Heure Bleue - Guerlain

Hermes Caleche
Chanel No. 5
Chanel Coco
Stetson
Lady Stetson
YSL Rive Gauche
Estee Lauder White Linen
Estee Lauder Knowing

I think it is because of the particular type of aldehydes they use. In some cases, the soapy smell diminishes after about 20-60 min. In others, it stays throughout the development.

No. 10 Myrrhe (Myrrh) from the Prada Exclusives range.

Agree that Gold Musk smells, like soap, gold Dial.
Jaisalmer smels of Maja bar soap.
Sicily smells like the original Caress.

Creed Royal English Leather smells like saddlesoap.

Puro Lino has a harsh, alkaline quality that is the closest thing I've ever smelled to Ivory soap. Of course, there's much more to it.
Also, Fred Hayman's Touch for Men is a dead ringer for Neutrogena soap.
They all smell like soap because the smell of soap is added fragrance.

Having said that, Drakkar Noir has always been a double for Irish Spring to me.
Soaps have very little smell on their own. When most people think of soap, they are thinking of relatively light, inoffensive and uncomplicated scents. I've had soaps that ranged anywhere from smelling like lemon verbena, to sandalwood, to vetiver, or even a little musk.

I love sandalwood in a soap. Fake sandalwood is fine for soap.
prada amber pour homme has a wonderful soap smell imo. I also use the shower gel and love that too!
Silver Musk by Nasomatto
smells exactly like a nice soap...nothing else.
I actually like it a lot....just too expensive for the amount you get
post #47 of 56
I wore Guerlain Vetiver to work today and a co-worker told me I smelled "soapy".
I've heard others say Uomo? Moschino is soapy, and LS also said that in the perfume guide book, but there's a biting or bitter element to it that I've never experienced in a soap. Anyone know of a soap brand that smells a lot like U?M, with that bitter quality ?
I think the initial opening of Green Irish Tweed smells a bit like soap (in a good way).

Also, I've been told that YSL L'Homme is "soap."

I like smelling like soap, btw.
The oakmoss note is soapy to me.

Great Jones
Guerlain Vetiver
English Fern
Paco Rabanne pour Homme

Prada Amber is a sharp soap

FCUK Him smells like soap bubbles like the ones you get in a plastic container and blow bubbles from a wand.

Dune and Fil de Soie by L'Atelier Bohème both smell like Dial soap

Spanish Leather smells like castile soap

The original post mentions Equipage and I agree completely. Somewhere right after the mid-notes, it comes out. I would also add:
Ho Hang by Balenciaga, which I think resembls Equipage a lot (but not as smooth). HH also reminds me of soap.
However, Andrew_B, I don't think these are very good choices for warm weather. The patchouli and the leather can sour on the skin very easily. Unless you apply very little.

Sea Island Cotton from BBW smells like a clean fresh shower!!!!so good and comforting
post #53 of 56
I adore soapy scents!
I've never understood the trend of "freshly out of shower clean skin smells" (J Lo Glow, Clean etc.) since so many great classics already smell exactly like that.

Only recently I tested modern Climat edt - it instantly made me think of a bath soap my mother used when I was a child. It's a shame Lancome doesn't produce Climat soap anymore. I would definitely enjoy it.

All the men's Prada line...
Amber
Amber Intense
Infusion
All the Infusion flankers
Lina Rossa

They all have to be lightly applied as they can all be incredibly cloying if over applied.

Definitely agree with Mugler Cologne.
