Tam Dao- similar?

I recently purchased, and LOVE Tam Dao by Diptyque. Â*My only complaint is that I wish it had better staying power. Â*I've been researching scents that might be similar but longer lasting and I've ordered samples of the CdG incense series, along with Sequoia and Palisander, which I won't be getting till next week.

I'm hesitant to get samples of others that might be in the same vein, such as: 10 Corso Como (not very fond of rose or oud), Heeley Cedre (not fond of cumin), and Ginestet Le Boise (have seen reviews that longevity is questionable)

I have high hopes for Kyoto, which I've seen compared to Tam Dao a number of times.

Any input is great appreciated! Â*

Kyoto smells nothing like Tam Dao, in my opinion. It is part of the incense series and so smells like Japanese incense burning in a Buddhist temple. Personally, I don't care for it at all. I think it's the patchouli and coffee mix. However, I love Tam Dao. I have heard it compared to Tumulte by Christian Lacrouix though. I wish Tam Dao lasted longer on my skin.

Sequoiah and Pilasander are both fantastic. I really want both as well.

Gucci Rush? It's not better, but better priced anyway

Tam Dao is such a sandalwood-centric scent, that if you are after similar, but more long-lasting ones on your skin, I would suggest the Villoresi Sandalo (another great, rich sandalwood) or Lutens' Santal de Mysore (if you can bear the hugely spicey opening). I find these some of most "pure" sandalwood scents around. There are some other great ones of course, eg the Trumper Sandalwood, and from what I hear Chanel Egoiste and Floris Santal, but they appear to me a greater mix of sandalwood and other notes. Whereas something like Tam Dao, even though it has other notes, is relentlessly dedicated to that single note.

Sante.

Yesterday I used the essential oils Cedar and Indian sandalwood on my diffuser. Just these two. Three drops sandalwood, two drops Cedar. It was very very close to Tam Dao. Maybe I try to use it on my skin tomorrow. If the notes work out it will last for 24 hours for sure. The cedar oil was relatively cheap, the 100% genuine indian sandalwood oil price was insane though. But you go with drops here anyway.

I was lucky to get some decants of LV Sandalo and a rather big one of Santal de Mysore, which I've read a lot of good things here. Both are absolutely amazing IMO, but they are not even close to Tam Dao. I think it's because of the Cedar.

Trumper's Sandalwood Cologne bottle I had to order blind. In the poll "Best sandalwood" it was very close behind Tam Dao on third spot.

The Sandalwood note is my favourite.

I received my samples. Was disappointed with the incense series. Kyoto smells just like a citronella candle on my skin, unfortunately, so I didn't care for it either. Avignon smells just like church incense, which is nice but not what I'd want to smell like. Jaisalmer to me smelled like charred BBQ chicken. Zagorsk was my favorite of the incense series, it's a nice pine/wood/incense scent that reminds me a bit of Creed's Epicea.

Palisander is amazing and I'll be ordering a bottle of it soon. It's notes according to Luckyscent: "Brazilian palisander wood, Virginian red cedar, Japanese red chili peppers, saffron from Iran, myrrh from south Yemen." It's a very smooth fragrance, no harshness at all. The myrrh gives it a slight sweetness. I didn't see any similarities between Palisander and Sequoia, which was OK but I found it to be a bit sharp and medicinal for me.

I just sampled Zagorsk yesterday, and I absolutely loved it. Much of the day there was a familiarity to something and it took me all day to figure it out (And it did last pretty much all day). This has much in common with Dzing. Take the sweetness out of Dzing, and you have something very close to Zagorsk.

I like Tam Dao too and have tried most of the fragrances being mentioned here, Kyoto, Sequoia, Palisander, LV Sandalo, Trumpers, etc. I understand the incense comparisons for Tam Dao, though; it's not supposed to be an incense fragrance, but in fact I find it comes out smokey and incensy and not typical sandalwood like Floris or Trumpers (then again, do I really know what the archetypal sandalwood is like ?).
I recommend you try LV Incensi; not the same as TD, has a kind of fresh green nut note, but somehow in the general spirit of TD (less sweet).

I do like LV Incensi, found it to be heavy on the cinnamon. Reminds me of "Red Hots" candy.

Anyway, I appreciate all the input. Thanks for the suggestions.

I too am a Tam Dao lover, but it lasts an age on me. I guess I'm lucky. My other favorite in the sandalwood familiy is Trumper's Sandalwood, but its a totally different creature from Tam Dao. Dr. Creed's suggestion sounds like your best bet. If there were any scent you wanted to copy with simple essential oils, Tam Dao is a good candidate because of it simplicity.
