Today's Fragrance Testing

Today I went to a giant mall i had never been to before and i noticed a little perfume shop that was WALL-to-WALL with cool stuff. Not really any niches, mostly designer, but all kinds of stuff I never see in the states. There were a few middle-Eastern guys sitting in the back talking. I went in and one of them asked me if he could help me. I felt terrible because I just wanted to stand there and gawk at everything, meanwhile he was just standing there twiddling his thumbs waiting for me to buy something and leave. I inquired about Ungaro III and he opened a box so that I could test it. I felt bad that he did that, and I told him not to, but he opened it anyway.

Ungaro wasn't bad. Kind of reminded me of Michael or something. An old "daddy" scent. I hated the bottle, otherwise maybe... I saw DKNY Energy but didn't test it.

They had some Creeds. I tested Erolfa on one arm and MI on the other...I don't know. I really expected more out of Erolfa. It wasn't as evocative of the sea as I'd hoped. Not bad, but after a while I kind of disliked it.

MI... I just don't know. I sort of liked its similarity to Himalaya- the Creed house note. Yet, it seems kind of wish-washy. Like I said in another post, my complaint with Creeds is their lack of structure- all flesh, no bones. I know girls are supposed to love MI. They wanted $130 for a big bottle. I'm mulling it over.

I felt like buying SOMETHING. I didn't want to make the guy open everything, but I saw that they had Joop! Rococo Homme. I knew it wasn't anyone's favorite, but I liked the bottle and I like peppery scents so I bought some. Honestly I don't think it's anything special at all. Perhaps I'll get more out of it in time. I don't dislike it- it smells like peppery fruit punch, but it's a bit weak and not unique enough. I was expecting more of a "statement" from it. It needs something of a "grabber" note. Something bizarre.

So anyway. Still thinking about MI.

I remember getting Rococo based on the description and thinking the name sounded cool. I figured Joop! makes that intense Joop! Homme which is sweet to beat the band, then this must be an equally intense dry wood leather creation. Wrong! It had almost no scent on me at all--just a slight peppery cardboard thingie. I was as glad as could be to swap that stuff away. Now Joop! What About Adam is another story...

I love those little shops. Sometimes you can find the best discontinued stuff there. It can be disheartening to wade through the drek, but when you do find the old bottle of Derby or Fuel or Havana or Diorama--Hallelujah!

Millésime Impérial has a metallic note that I find quite discordant.

It's a scent that I would consider wearing during the summer season, but then it would be competing with other great fragrances such as Eau Sauvage, and Monsieur Givenchy. Of all the scents that I have tried in the Creed family, Tabaróme (Vintage) is the only one that my nose doesn't find that common Creed house note that you mentioned. But then I don't consider Tabaróme an everyday type fragrance -- it has a rather limited usage.

Next time you go down that shop, try haggling them -- you'll love the experience! Â* ;D 8-)

Hi Indie!
I finally see an Ungaro's description that I can understand! But, hey, do you really think Michael is an "old daddy" scent? I've always thought of Michael as a trendy night/club fragrance... One of my girlfriend's favourites...
Does Ungaro have that tobacco accord I can smell in Michael?
Talking about Erolfa, I also expected more... It's a nice fragrance anyway. Maybe I need another full wearing.

Well, regarding the Ungaro III. I kind of wish I had grabbed it instead of Joop! Rococo. It was nice. A bit dated. It reminded me of Michael in its dryness. I can't remember much about the Ungaro, just that it was kind of an old school kind of scent. I'd really like to try it again.

But yeah, I really found Erolfa to be nothing great. Maybe I should have snagged MI.

Something about Erolfa reminds me of a motorboat on the sea, not the sea itself. There's something a little synthetic or petroleum-like in there that makes me think of the exhaust fumes from a motor boat, like the exhaust mixing with salty air. I like that note in SMW, but not in Erolfa. I think Amouage Arcus does a better job of getting this note right. My comments to Maisonstinky about it were that it's what I thought Erolfa would have been. Many here say Mare is the best for this sea note. I haven't tried it yet, but soon will.

Indie,

You HAVE TO go back and BUY Ungaro III right away. I bought it in Paris in december and it is one of my best buys in many years. It is such a magnificent warm and nice scent and not a "daddy" scent at all (though there is nothing wrong with that!!).

Regarding the bottle......it is a piece of art in my book - you do not see bottles like that nowadays!

You will not regret it!

I REALLY don't find Millessime Imperiale to be that special at all, seriously I tested t and maybe the tester was old or whatever but it didn't smell that special at all to me, I don't understand all the raves about it.
If UNFORGIVABLE like everyone says, is reminiscent of MI than I have nothing to look forward to when this arrives to Europe.

I think I'll have to take your advice. I'll probably wait for cold weather again, since the Ungaro is such a warm, spicy scent. Not something I'll wear in the coming months. The bottle though...I still think it's kind of outdated looking. Rest assured I will pick this up later in the year. It has a nice formal yet slightly quirky appeal.
