Popped into my favorite frag shop this afternoon and got a few samples - Floris Santal (which I have been wanting to try), Penhaligon's Opus 1870 and Terre D'Hermès. First impressions:
Floris Santal - wow, this is interesting stuff! It's too early for me to say whether I'll want to wear this, but it is certainly quite an impressive creation. Struck me initially as flowery but has developed over the past four hours into an amazing creamy, highly distinctive frag with vanilla and a contrasting mix of modest warmth and mysterious cheekiness. And VERY potent. Puts my beloved Gucci pH to shame in that regard. I'm fascinated by Santal but find it a tad feminine, anyone agree? I think it'll be gorgeous on my wife, will get her to test it...
Opus 1870 is lovely... but disappeared as soon as I put it on. A new dimension in subtlety. A very comforting smell, reminds me of warm clothes fresh out of the drier. Pure innocence, angelic. But just too ephemeral for me, what a shame.
Terre D'Hermès - orange, grapefruit & other citrus notes initially. Then I get a touch of cinnamon. Then the forest elements hit me. Quite pleasing. Fresh but hearty. A bit of soap, too. Although I'm not a citrus fan, I could end up liking this one. Just not sure whether it'll captivate me enough. Let's see how the drydown turns out.
