Green Fragrance

Hi All:

Can anyone define for me exactly what a "green fragrance" is? I bought a bottle of Marquis from The Crown Perfumery. I really like this fragrance, but have no idea what "green" in their ad copy refers to. I ran a search of this discussion group and didn't find what I'm looking for. I've also asked a few pretty ladies at the cosmetics counter at a local department store. They struggled a lot trying to say something intelligent. Not that I think they were stupid; my impression from their initial reaction is that my question wasn't a topic in their training - but they tried to be helpful.

im kind of new to this stuff, but from what i gather it means very plant-smelling, but not bitter per se

it could be said that the smell of freshly mowed grass in the summer is very green

That's basically spot on. It's a leafy plant smell. The typical note of the genre is galbanum. Although you'd think that would smell pretty casual, many "formal" fragrances have this character.

Saying something is "green" may mean different things to different people, but there seems to be a leafy context. Still, I think around here it usually means what wajt said.

For some, it might be more of a plain grassy note (Miracle Homme L'Aquatonic), sometimes it is an herbal note (Versace L'homme), sometimes minty (Lacoste Booster), and to a much lesser extent I have seen it described as pine (Bowling Green; Acqua di Selva). Vetiver judiciously used can bring out grassy component in frags sometimes - L'Occitane Vetyver comes to mind, but you really have to wait to experience the vetiver with this one.
