The Most Honest Recommendation You've Heard

What do you consider to be the most honest recommendation
you've received for a fragrance? You know -- one where you
feel there was no reason the person would have to be telling
you anything but the truth; no hidden agenda, such as a
sales associate may have when then keep telling you to try
this "wonderful" new scent.

I remember shopping at Nordstrom once when a woman whom
I think was a sales rep for some fragrance line was there answering
questions. If I remember correctly she may have been promoting
Cartier fragrances. Anyway, we got to talking a bit and she mentioned
that the most incredible men's fragrance she had smelled was one that
they didn't even have for sale there at Nordstrom: Givenchy Gentleman.

It struck me that this was likely a very honest recommendation.
It also struck me that she was a very attractive woman [which partly
explains why I remember the conversation, I suppose.]

The women who introduced me to Bvlgari Pour Homme when I told her I was looking for a scent for work. It's the scent that made me love this hobby.

For me the well-expressed, impartial recommendations for Voleur de Roses from the Basenotes Community coterie were the reason for beginning to develop my fragrance appreciation!

I'll say the most honest recommendation I received was from a sales lady at Neiman Marcus. I was testing the Creed scents and then she told me, "It's a lot cheaper to buy those online. You can get them for a fraction of the price." I don't know if they get paid on commission or not, but that was a brutally honest statement.

Neiman Marcus (as far as I know) SA get paid only in commision. So I'm really not sure why she did that, but maybe she was a vendor.

Yup, the ones right here on basenotes. Honest...yes. Informative...well? not everyone has the same nose as you. When in doubt, just buy a sample and sniff the hell out of it, put a little on, see how it reacts to you. If you like it, then buy a good sized decant to see if it is something you are going to tolerate throughout the day and on consecutive days.
However if you come across a frag like Jaipur Boucheron EDP, then none of that stuff is necessary as the first whiff from the bottle itself will get ya hooked.

I loved colonge before bvlgari PH but, this fragrance was the first one I really, really went crazy over. I really thought this was amazing and it wowed me dearly. After 3 full bottles, an aftershave, dedorant sticks and shower gel useage, I have left it alone. Perhaps I will come back to my beloved old friend one day. As much as I love the CDG lines, vetiveru is just a copy of the master blend of bvlgari ph.

When so many trustworthy experts love it, I must go and at least sample Bvlgari PH !

About 6 months ago I was in Von Maur and when the SA asked if I needed help I asked her if they had anything "kind of sweet, feminine, and different". She pulled out Hanae Mori, and I was sold. That was exactly the kind of scent I was looking for.
