This one is going to be hard to explain. I have only a half-baked idea of what I'm asking myself.
In the past, I've started threads such as "What Bottle are you Most Proud Of," "What's the Best Reviewed
Fragrance on Basenotes" and now, what's the world's most beautiful fragrance.
Not necessarily your favorite, or even in your top 5 or 10. Maybe it's a scent that you, yourself, would never wear, for whatever reason. And yeah, I probably am talking about, perhaps/maybe, a woman's scent. But not necessarily. Men's frags are designed to smell "great" and women's "beautiful," so I'm probably falling into the marketing hype and gender stereotypes...but what's the scent that makes you go "Oh, my, god."
Unlike a member here who seems never to miss an opportunity to proclaim his disdan for men who wear women's scents (which I find incredibly limiting for someone who loves scent, but to each his own), I own the usual suspects...Daim Blone, Cuir de Russe, Jolie Madam, Shalimar, Bandit, Mitsoku...and oodles of unisex frags, mostly niche. And I DO find them more "beautiful" than mens' fragrances, though I would say that I pick the occasion when I wear them more carefully than a masculine scent.
Of course, this is all subjective...the most beautiful scent in the world is the one you choose. For me, there's no comparison: Loukhoum by Keiko Mecheri. The funny thing is, I rarely wear it. Even though it's marketed as a unisex fragrance, I definitely think it skews feminine...and yet its sheer beauty never ceases to leave me weak-kneed. I spray a blast of this fragrance on every person who visits my home, and without exception, man or woman, their jaws drop, followed by words like..."Dude, that's unbelievable..." "Holy shit!"..."That's beautiful!..." etc., etc.
I wish I were better at describing fragrances, but I'm not. With fragrances, like ex Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart said when asked to define pornography, "I can't describe it, but I know it when I see it." I can't describe what makes Loukhoum so freaking beatiful, but I sure recognize beauty when I smell it.
For those who don't know this gem, there's an excellent write up in the Directory. For those who do, how would you describe it?
