$5K deep....what did I learn? - Page 2

One of my favorite posts ever on Basenotes.
One note on Follia di Aquaramma: The Ulta or Ultra version in the blue bottle is AWESOME. One of my favorites. It is an EDP.

I'd like to have the original too, if I were not parring down.

Does anyone know if the OP is still a basenotes member?

If he's anything like me, I wonder what he's collecting now?

Great post!

Thanks for the bump mike. I missed this one completely.

I think this post should be a sticky because it can happen to anyone.

Wow. Being new to the whole fragrance thing, I found this post to be very insightful.

Is $5K really that much? Or is it that he spent that amount quickly? Haven't many of you spent at least a few thousand by now? I've spent quite a bit just on postage for my swaps! Anyway, when I started out it wouldn't have mattered if I just bought a bunch of samples, because I really didn't understand much of what I was smelling anyway, and my tastes have changed significantly from those early days. There's really no one right way to get into this, IMO. Some of us can afford $5K and some of us can't, and that's the crucial distinction.

The OP clearly had preconceptions about only wanting a "masculine" frag, which is okay for him, but I'm glad I got a copy of Luca Turin's (and TS's) book and kept an open mind about "crossover" frags. It's allowed me to really broaden the rotation, relieving what may have become too boring. And, as most of us know, there are ways to buy at way below retail for many frags, and that allows you to "dump" stuff you hate on ebay and recoup much of your money. What really irritates me about ebay, though, is how they seem totally uninterested in stopping the sales of fakes. It's so easy to see who is selling huge amounts of the stuff through their site. I wish they would contact the FBI or any law enforcement agency that was willing to get involved, and get that nonsense cleaned up.

I disagree with 80% of what he says about perfumes, and I do not share his paradigm when aproaching fragrances, but I found this insightful:

Judgemental-p!ck irish agrees. That is how I think of D&G. Sorry.

I am glad that you did not take it personal and I hope no body else does (hard not to, I know ). This and Joop have been the two fragrances that gave me a headache in less than 30 seconds after smelling them. The worst part is that about two years ago everyfreakinbody at the office was using it. 8 out of 8. I was new and I did not want to say anything, so for about two weeks I was transported back to middle school: sweaty pubescent kids going to town on cans of Axe... just awful.

Still, I can rationalize it as much as I want, but the truth is that my immediate opinion of D&G PH wearers is nothing more than an irrational and immature prejudice. But we all have prejudices, right? Those who do not are freaks .

I kid, I kid.
I will stop now .

I can relate to it very much

I read this post when I first joined Basenotes.

The thing that strikes me the most now is that this guy got off pretty lightly! I exceeded $5K a long time ago and my cumulative spending is now several times that.

When I read that a frag is a headache maker, I actually consider that potentially great news, because there's a good chance that it's powerful juice and I can just spray once !
