YSL M7...Heaven Scent (or purgatory)

Why do i ABSOLUTELY LOVE M7? It's dark, sweet and pungent all in one. Yes, i said sweet, but not a feminine sweetness by any stretch of the imagination. The sweetness comes from the agarwood, a precious element that's been sought after and valued since ancient times. But, who really cares about that? What matters is that it smells just plain amazing...and unique. I seriously doubt that there's anything out there that smells alike.
From the bewitchingly evil citrus opening, the mysterious agarwood in the middle, and deep, ambery finish, it is SMOOTH sailing all the way. M7 is my holy grail for sure!

I'm just soooooo sorry they discontinued M7 Fresh. I love M7 but don't wear it too often because it's a bit too heavy for a daytime scent. More of a nighttime scent and I don't go out all that often at night anymore.

M7 Fresh, on the other hand, is much more of a wearable "everyday" fragrance. I have a couple bottles and savor every spritz.

I agree ... great scent!

*M7 Fresh* seems only to have been discontinued in the US. As far as I know, it hasn't been discontiued outright. Indeed, it was in all the stores on my recent trip to Australia: bottles and bottles of the stuff.

Knightowl, great to see someone so passionate about a scent. Even though I am not a particular fan of *M7*, I can really dig your enthusiasm. Now *M7 Fresh* is another story. It's a truly beautiful, delicate, and magical creation in its own right. I love the stuff.

I own and love both also, but I remember some months ago it was very common to hate M7 fresh. I remember also a poll and the result was a disaster for M7 fresh

It is soo good. It's one of my more recent purchases and I love it now. Dark and woody. I love the woody notes. Great scent and I can't wait for the cooler weather so I can wear it everyday!!! HEAVEN in a bottle.

I got a decant of this recently and I truly don't get it. To me it smelled like a sickly sweet hospital room - chemical, synthetic mess. Then again, I've grown to love many scents that I initially hated, so I'll revisit this one to be sure.

[blue]To my nose, at least, *M7* has a very chemical, medicinal note that I find is a deal breaker and, which is, incidentally, missing in *M7 Fresh*, which I think in many ways is an entirely different animal to the original. I too like baron have grown to love scents that on first impressions didn't do it for me, so I too think I'll revisit *M7* original in the spirit of exuberant solidarity with knightowl et al.

I love M7, too: such a deep, dark, sweet woody scent with the most sexy and irresistible trail... Extra points for the packaging!

I too have warmed to it after initially thinking it was nothing special. The only reason I haven't yet bought it is because I have Gucci Pour Homme which performs too similar a function. But it will be added to the collection one day.

After being somewhat unsure about M7 from the start, I've now drifted off almost completely. I'm holding out for some cooler weather to see if I shouldn't just sell it. It is well crafted but there is something there that never quite hits the comfort zone for me. I don't really want to narrow down too much but I'm just not sure I want to wear it at all.

Another reason I no longer buy blind.

M7 is easily the one scent that I had to try time and time again until I 'got' it. I probably wore it ten times before something clicked and I was suddenly, at that late moment, completely taken by it. It is now one of my absolute favorites.

Here's some suggestions based on my experiences:

1- Don't even bother until the weather is cooler. This is not a summer scent - it lives for fall and winter. It is simply too much for hot days.

2- You must (you MUST) try it together with the shower gel. The gel is basically faithful to the scent, but it adds an extra note (a bit of ginger perhaps?) that does an amazing job of fleshing out and rounding the overall experience.

3- This is one I wear on the heavy side. It's a sillage monster. Don't ask it to be shy! That is not it's nature.

In short, keep trying, give it time, and if you can't come to terms with it, swap it with me, I need some more!

M7 is a case in point that all fragrances dont need to smell like (fresh laundry) or citrus marine to be great.

Love the smokey ambery drydown in this one. Very nice and maybe better suited for ages 30 and up IMHO.

Heaven scent. M7 was love at first sniff. M7 Fresh put everything I love about the original into a more versatile scent that I can enjoy during the summer months. They are both masterpieces.

Tom Ford sure did "think out of the box" when he came up with M7, which is in my book an instant classic.
I guess i fit into the targeted demographic for this one, since i'm 34 years old!

I have and love M7 Fresh. I found one bottle last year at Marshall Fields in Chicago and another bottle on ebay. Amazingly enough I've never actually tried the original M7, I wonder if I would like it. The Fresh starts out with a great grapefruit top note combined with a sweet woody aroma. It lasts forever on me too.

In every decent size crowd there's likely to be a dissenter! Having said that, I can't stand M7! Â*[smiley=thumbdown.gif] As a medical professional, I know what tincture of benzoin smells like (that brownish liquid they sometimes use to secure your sutures together with steri-strips), and I don't need my fragrance to remind me of that. So, into purgatory goes M7... [smiley=smiley_down.gif]

This is my SOTD today so I figured I would bring up a old topic about it. The first time I put M7 on I got the cough syrup note everyone was taking about and I was turned off buy it. The notes of agarwood is hard to be turned off because it is woody and sweet at the same time. In my collection, the closest scent I have to M7 is Visit. I imagine if Visit had some sweetness in it, it would have alot in common with M7. Anyways, I put it on today (is 2 shots too much for M7) and I was instantly subdued to a sweet dark deep and pugent juice. While I did not get cough syrup this time, the opening notes just give me a visual of the color red, maybe it is the packaging. Anyways I might write a review for this later, so I better stop talking before I write one now!

It takes a lot to impress me with a mens scent but M7 impresses me majorly. It has the characteristics and qualities take make womens scents so special and nice.

Rich, dark and woody -- but the first thirty minutes after application can be torturous. (The sweetness is so cloying at first that it's almost unbearable sometimes, but the drydown is soooooo worth it!)

If this one's a sillage monster, I haven't noticed it yet. (But as good as it smells during the drydown, I feel fortunate for those around me if, in fact, M7 IS the sillage monster some have dubbed it.)

I am fairly anxious to try M7 Fresh, but there is, I have to admit, some reluctance on my part. (I normally avoid anything with the adjective "fresh" in its title -- that word usually conjures up images of grapefruit and "ozonic note" and fig-laden "aquatics" that goosestep in sync with a vast army of AdG clones. But when I hear Basenoters such as Scentemental and others praise it so fulsomely, I simply HAVE to try it -- it sounds really yummy. I won't even ask why the powers-that-be may be considering its discontinuation in the U.S. (I gave up hoping for reasonable on their decisions years ago -- witness Leonard Pour Homme, Havana, Montana Parfum d'Homme etc. It's factual but disheartening that the average American consumer would rather have yet another pasty Tommy lemming advancing toward the cliff than to face a fragrance that boldly goes where no fragrance has yet gone before.)

I don't get where this is overly sweet. Have you guys tried Opium yet? M7 is not remotely close in sweetness. I fact I find it rather sour.

tvlampboy: I am one out of the M7 Fresh camp. Grapefruit? Yes, plenty. Ozonic calone aqua crap? None. M7 Fresh is basically a quieter M7 with heaps of grapefruits on it, you can definitely make out the original M7. Very versatile imho, but also quite limited to warmer weather. And you have to use a lot, I think I use half the number of sprays CoL uses when applying Gaultier²

I guess once I have finished my 3.3 of M7 Fresh, I'll get M7.

i'm wearing M7 today and was a bit worried i'd gone too heavy on the trigger. so i was sitting here starting to feel a bit bad, wondering if my coworkers were being bothered (i've told them many times that if i ever smell too strongly or anything i wear is bothering them to let me know - i'm not sensitive that way). anyhow, no one had said anything and i was sitting here gently enjoying the scent radiating out from under my shirt when someone across the way said "oh my god is that Ben Gay?" and i sorta started to feel a little self conscious. like "ok it's not that bad. even if you don't like it..."

and then it suddenly hit me. the Ben Gay fumes really hit my nose too - one of my coworkers has a bad back and applied some ben gay in the office! and HOLY CHRIST it's stunk the whole place up. so now i'm frantically pulling my shirt collar up over my nose in a sort of "M7 fights off the Ben Gay Menace" subplot into my office day.

and to think i was sitting here secretly wanting to test the new Lolita Lempicka Masculin bottle that just arrived via UPS but worried that it might make the office smell unpleasant!

It does have the sweet medicinal quality too it. How heavy on the trigger did you go today?

Mmmmm M7... smooth, smoky, dark woods.

I like this oud scent because the oud is under controll while many others (Montales, in particular) tend to be a little harsh with their UBERBLASTS of oud - but then again, I kinda like the UBEROUD!

I like the medicinal sharpness of M7. To me it makes it a bit exciting, and does'nt let its intrigue settle. The sweetness of M7 is kept in check and the spicyness is lifted. I would'nt change a thing.

I just recently received my first bottle of M7, and I am hooked. The cough syrup note at the beginning is a bit off-putting, but it fades quickly enough into a beautiful sweet woodsy smell. Now if only the weather would understand it is freaking fall, and not time for 70 degree weather, I could wear it more often.

Well, I won't recant my review of M7. I still think it the best scent for teenage girls to spray on their pillows at night, as they cry themselves to sleep while pining for true love. But what the hell, I love Habit Rouge, too.

For you gentlemen who find M7 neither feminine nor downright silly ; a kind of Chanel #5 meets Nu with a touch of earth tones. Who, instead find it to be evocative of " dark, smoky woods" , may I humbly suggest:

( And this is a wide range in the forest category)

1.Antaeus
2. Epicea
3. Salvador
4. Salvador PH
5. Jacomo de Jacomo
6. Francesco Smalto
7. Joseph Abdoud
8. L'Occitane Vetiver
9. Esencia Lowe.

Be forewarned though, some of these are terribly outdated. In fact, they might even be called masculine.

Does anyone else get an image of the color dark ruby red when they spray M7 on? It could be because of the bottle, but the top notes give off a bright ruby red feeling (maybe the cough syrup note). But as the scent moves along, it gets more woodier and turns into a dark ruby red. This is how I see it.

I really like M7, but only the Aftershave Lotion, it lasts VERY long for a aftershave and it smells much lighter then the EDT. One day I might get the EDT and see if I can go up a step.

Returned to this for the first time since i owned a bottle around it's release must say i dont mind this at all i think if sprayed lightly it's very good juice ,doesn't seem half as sweet as i remember well after that raucous opening anyway and the dry down is very nice indeed .
