My Serge Lutens Experience

This weekend I was ar Chicago, so I thought it would be good idea to do some testing at Barneys. I tried a couple of S. Lutens' but it was big letdown except one. I am not saying that they are bad fragrances but I found nothing outstanding to justify the price and all of these excellent reviews. (No offence intended!)

Vetiver Oriental
Down to earth vetiver scent with a touch of vanilla. Nothing spectacular. I prefer Obsession by a mile.

Douce Amere
No lasting power, wears close to skin. But this is a good thing because I find the scent very disagrreable. There is something akin to " smell of bacon" in this which turned me off. Thanx I pass this one.

Santal Blanc
Sandalwood base with floral topnotes. Nothing exciting here!

Arabie
It is a decent scent with cartloads of space at the beginning, yet it dried down to dried fruit notes which was quite nice. I might consider getting a full bottle in the future.

Ambre Sultan
Now this is one helluva amber scent. The topnotes are dark and resinous with smooth ambery drydown. I am hard to please when it comes to amber because amber gets cloying on me easily. That is the reason why I dismiss Ambre Extreme easily. On the other hand Ambre Sultan wasn't cloying at all. Now it is #1 on my list. I will get a full bottle as soon as I find a decent deal.

L'Artisan Tea for Two
Another big letdown for me. Smoke and tea notes, but it seemed kind of "not integrated" in a sense. In successful fragrance the notes blend well, but for some reason this is not so in Tea for Two. It is as if someone mixed two scents in a bottle.

I find most SL fragrances to be a tad too ephemeral for my skin and nose. As thin as tissue. However there are a few that are my favorites: strong and long lasting. I wear them often. They are (in order of preference)

Fumerie Turque
Arabie
Cherugi
Cuir Mauresque
Daim Blond (the weakest in this grouping of mine but still worthy of any wardrobe)

But of course, the best thing he ever did is Nombre Noir which is nearly impossible to find.

I also find most Lutens fragrances unwearable for me except for Daim Blond ... which is definitely in my top 5 and I wear a lot, even to work.

I do like Arabie and Bois et Fruits (non-export line) but I can't think of a single situation where I could wear them.

I so love Lutens. I used to be a Creed fan. But now, I much prefer Lutens (although I still love Creed MI). I wear Douce Amere and absolutely adore it. Its got a spicy vanilla like smell which I find very classy indeed. Well, that's how it smells on me. But I do have one complaint, it does not last long on me which is very disappointing considering the price and the fact that it is edp.

I love Vetiver Oriental. It has that same sweetness like Hanae Mori for men. I can understand however ,why some can't wear it , for that reason.
