Basenoters Unite!

Let's all get together and smell things.

No, really.

I need a vacation, and I'd really enjoy some kind of frag convention. Or maybe just a party. Or I guess I could just go home and sniff some Dzing.

If no one is interested in a minor convention, I'm going on a shopping spree in Minneapolis sometime soon. Feel free to come help.

You should make your way over to NYC. That is where I get my fix. I like the thought of a convention but Grant is across the ocean. We have plenty of stuff to smell over here though....

Bruce^

Edit: Who doesn't want to visit NYC?? I'm sure it is/has been a destination spot for most people. This would just forst some initiative. There is everything you can possibly want in the city that never sleeps. It is a great place and certainly would provide all of the fragrances you could hope for... I vote NYC!!!

This really has to be well planned. First thing we need to do is pick a city (By Vote).
Second a committee of volunteers would be needed in the city we choose, to arrange for hotels and airfare and convention halls etc, etc, etc.

Believe me guys I think a lot of people do want this to happen. WE CAN DO IT.

It may take a while but good planning is definately needed.

Count me in, too!

We need a Basenotes North American Convention. My ideas for cities include:
-NYC (a fragrance utopia)
-Chicago (my fave big city and one I know well)
-LA (may be too expensive, though)
-San Francisco (another good idea)
-Toronto (for something a bit different)
-St. Louis (the Jewelbox and Shaw's Gardens, centrally located, reasonable)
-Orlando (Disney World... Marlen would love this)
-Las Vegas (for the inner gambler in all of us)
-New Orleans (to show them a bit of post-Katrina love...nice perfumeries, too)

I'll be more than willing to volunteer to help find airfare deals, hotels, covention halls, and such for Grant, CoL, Marlen, Paul G. LadyL, and such. I'll start a poll soon!

It would be like a pack of yard dogs trapped in a yard smelling each other's arrss.

Hey guys, not to come off as a PC-weeny here, but lets keep in mind that many, actually most, Basenoters aren't from the USA. Nothing against a Basenotes North America convention, I think its a great idea, but lets make sure to acknowledge that there's lots of guys who will be left out. If only there were some place equidistant from everybody... stupid spherical planet...

How about Oliver Creed's home turf?

I tried adding a message to my poll, but it seems to have disappeared. I understand what you're saying.

Here's the message that goes with the poll:

Well, I decided in light of my last post to add a poll concerning a possible Basenotes convention.

I don't want people from outside the U.S. to feel left out, but my impression is that intercontinental travel would make attendance impossible for many members here. And since I live here, I just went with locations in the continental U.S.

It seems like there are clusters of members in California, Texas, and New York. I wonder what location people will decide on (if they vote at all )

I've never started a poll before, so let's hope this works.

I Think Orlando would be perfect. A lot of people from outside USA would love to go to Epcot, Disney, Universal, etc and plan it as a vacation.

Marls where are you?????????

Seriously guys this will take time to plan. First things first , somebody start a poll for different cities, please.

hey Vijay- how close is Orlando to your establishment? Could we all load up into a couple of vans, armed with wishlists and creditcards, and have a little Basenotes-puts-Vijay's-kids-through-college excursion?

You got me there, yes I was biased about this, my store is only an hour away from Disney.

But I am serious about this, I will go along with the top vote getter. By the way the poll was started by MFfan310, so people please vote, including from outside the USA, the more the merrier.

Lets get the first step done.

If enough people vote/ask for an overseas convention, I'd be more than willing to take a nice long vacation! ;D

I think I'm unique in accumulating over 60 days of leave, however.

As I speak French, Paris would be my first European vote.

Another thought: If we got vendor support, where would it come from? U.S.? Europe?

St. Louis would be my choice obviously. And it IS right in the middle of the country, although so is Chicago and honestly, as a city Chicago kicks St. Louis ass in terms of things to do. There are some amazing bars in Chicago. Plus Paul G. and Duxoop (I think) live there.

I vote Chi-town. (behind longshot St. Louis of course)...although our botanical gardens are a beautiful place to smell the roses!

Are you from St. Louis? What's traffic like in that area?
Anywhere where basenoters are can have its own convention. I have on occasion taken trips for non-fragrance reasons (yea, hard to believe but true) and have met up with fellow board members to sniff around--which is especially cool since the natives know the best places. These may not be the biggest things in the world but still fun AND educational.

Most recent example: Vegas is a GREAT guy in San Diego area and we smelled some excellent 'fumes while I was there for a medical meeting.

Anyone traveling in East TN look me up and I'll show you all, well ok, BOTH places worth checking.

Compared to most major cities, traffic here is a breeze (of course I work nights so my hours are the reverse of most peoples'. I do sometimes see minor jams in traffic headed in the opposite direction). If you have a car, it's a pretty easy city to get around in. I love that it's like a big city and a small town all in one.

Plus, love it or hate it, you have to try Imo's St. Louis style pizza! It has a thin "cracker" crust with this tangy Provel cheese that sticks to your teeth. I love the stuff. All the talk of pizza on the OT boards, and I'm surprised nobody mentioned "St. Louis Style."

Still, I'd love to make an excuse to go to Chicago. There's a bar called the "Hop Leaf" that has over 400 Belgian Ales!

Possibility of me going to anywhere is small. But heres my toughts ;D

As nice it would be to go to places like Disney world etc. Things like that, really wouldnt be some of the "good" things about the citys.Tourist traps etc.No thanks!!

New Orleans would be cool. All the mystery and stuff. It could be like newer ending Halloween . You could wisit Ann Rice

And New York. Like someone said. Who wouldnt want to go to NYC!! CBGB´s!!

I have a silly dream to get to New York in someday. I`d really like to get there. Definetely, to me it is the most interesting part of America.
I voted for San Francisco. On second thought, I think New York is the best idea. I would like to go to the city with the best opportunities to get out to shops that would let us SAMPLE fragrances. My impression is that would be New York (in the US at least). It would be a great place for educational field trips. Field trips are a good idea for the conference. We might be able to get some very rewarding cooperation from shops and department stores.. Maybe they would provide some workshops for us (at their site or ours - whatever would make them most willing to offer us education. That would be so exciting.

I vote vegas at the Caesars hotel since nealy every major shopping store is there with nearly every major perfume selcetion. Also within walking distance there is a mall with Neimans and Saks for additional places to shop.
