Basenotes reviews vs. Makeupalley reviews

I get the impression, the reviews on MUA are often a lot worse compared with basenotes reviews. How come?
Just look at the reviews for MPG and Creed. If I didn't know better I wouldn't buy anything from these brands
reading those H O R R I B L E reviews.

The reviews on MUA are generally written by women who give bad ratings to anything that smells "masculine".

They don't have legends like de Charlus on MUA.

Makeupalley isn't a strict perfume board. I think a lot of the girls posting in the makeup and fitness boards are very young, but they still go out to sniff a Creed or two and write stupid reviews of them. You just have to sort the wheat from the chaff. A lot of the reviews are very well written.

I would in general that both of the assertions above are true. Â*I've read alot of reviews there and it is indeed from a female point of view and sensibility and the gals there are, on average, pretty young. Â*I will say, though, that the fragrance board has a more mature following than makeup and such. Â*I think the key is to find reviewers there that tend to run parallel with me on a few scents and read their reviews first..then there is a greater chance that their perceptions of something that I have not tried will be closer to mine. Â*

On the other hand, when I first started reading BN my thought was, "What's with the predominant Creed worship?" I myself only liking a couple of scent from that house and not the ones that get the constant kudos.

I was also wondering about this. Seems like some MUA reviews are written by unhappy sniffers, while here we are trying to find a positive aspect of each scent. As an example, please read some reviews here left by CalChick, I wish I could write like this: with elegance and respect to every single fragrance she has reviewed.

I agree. While there are plenty of flippant and pointless reviews to wade through, the Fragrance Board includes some truly excellent reviewers, whose writings are worth seeking out. And MUA has always made it easy (at least, in the years I've been a member) to follow the links to a reviewer's other reviews.

Ive actually spoken to a very high end fragrance shopfront owner, she remarked that basenotes is not trustworthy and over rated!(im not using her as a puppet....lol not my views!)..What then is the general view of basenotes as im new to the forum?

She probably wanted to make a sale, and wanted you to believe what she said over whatever you'd heard on BN about whatever she was trying to sell. One of the most common gripes you'll hear on BN is about SAs who don't know what the hell they're talking about. So I guess it goes both ways.

I don't think there's a better source of fragrance knowledge than BN, though you may have to dig a little for it.

Cases in point: where else are you going to find deep info like this or this?

I actually like MUA's reviews. I find that the women on there are extremely informed, especially given that it's not only a fragrance forum/site. Most of the niche brands and fragrances can be found there, with reviews. Of course, with anything, there are good and bad reviewers.

These are my two main sources. I have found Makeupalley extremely helpful too, in particular in combination with Basenotes. There are blogs out there that get carried away too much with imaginary pictures and emotions, so these are the ones I take with a pinch of salt now.

I find reviews on many sites helpful, especially if you find a common thread about the scent over the various places. The only reviews I totally discount are the "this is the most heavenly perfume, ever" or "horrible, reminds me of my granny" one liners.

I totally agree!..i guess she may have had her own agenda....Besides,i like to forge my own opinion and so far basenotes has been rich in informations and very varied.

Of course we wont agree with all reviews but they should only ever really be taken as a guide line...At the end of the day and often the beginning..lol..the choice is yours.

Basenotes if used wisely has to be the most informative fragrance site there is..

Hoora!

I read reviews on both sites. Sometimes there will be reviews on MUA of fragrances not listed in our directory.

Just like 30 Roses.
I appreciate MUA as another source for reviews.
