Your Favourite Internet Security Suite

Have you tried several internet security suites on your computer? If so, which one did you finally settle on, and what turned you off the ones that you rejected?

In the ones I've tested, I've often had the problem of the firewall running amok for the first minutes at start up, slowing everything down considerably. Do any not do this?

Also, if you have an older computer (say Pentium 111) do you have any suites that still work reasonably well with it? (I've found Bit Defender 8 to work reasonably well with my old laptop, but it still has some issues).

I assume that if you have a Pentium 11, any internet security suite you run on it, virtually stops everything else from running.

antivirus - AVG free edition - http://www.grisoft.com/doc/289/lng/us/tpl/tpl01

firewall - zonealarm free edition - http://www.zonelabs.com/store/conten...US&lang=en

(hardware firewall - linksys router)

spam - spambayes for outlook - http://spambayes.sourceforge.net/

spyware - adaware, spybot search and destroy

these are all free, all well-reviewed and reliable, and use less resources than a typical suite like norton. i've successfully run these on a p2 and p4.

I've used quite a few of them myself, though I prefer the Sygate free firewall.

The magazine reviews here indicate that the antivirus features from the big boys are more comprehensive than in the free ones. Though the reviewers thought Sygate and Zone Alarm were better than some of the integrated firewalls, and that spambayes was better than McAffee Spam killer, and that Spybot was better than several integrated anti-spyware programs.

Don't forget, if one takes advantage of the free trials, one can get the integrated ones effectively for free - at the moment I have Bit Defender 8 on a six months free trial, with support in an offer through a local magazine.

Also, my employer has a licence such that I can get PC Cillan free for home use - shame I don't like it (oddly enough, the technician who installed my cable modem was from California - and he said he's grown very attached to PC Cillan, and that it's the only one he'll ever use). I get other good deals from my employer - like being able to buy a copy of Office 2003 from Microsoft for US$22.

i used the norton suite for quite a few years, but found it to be a total resource hog.

suitewise, one of the tech guys that i work with recommends the zonealarm suite.

I bought the Kaspersky anti-virus, and I'm using the Kerio firewall. (in "light" mode; unregistered)

I use AVG too and I love it. There's a free version available as well.

Firewall: Visnetic, http://www.deerfield.com/products/visnetic-firewall/

Both work well on older systems, too.

just a heads-up...

"A critical flaw has been found in Kaspersky Antivirus. Making matters worse, third-party products that use Kaspersky's antivirus technology could also be vulnerable."

Quote:
The problem lies in Kaspersky's antivirus library, security researcher Alex Wheeler wrote in an advisory (download PDF of advisory here). The vulnerability likely affects multiple Kaspersky products on various platforms because the library is used throughout the company's consumer and corporate software, he said. Additionally, third-party products that use Kaspersky's antivirus technology could also be vulnerable, Wheeler said.
