Has cold season started already?

I know kids are back in school, passing around the germs already....but I can't believe we have a cold making it's rounds through our household and it's only September. I read on another board about a stomach flu going around too. It seems like every year it starts earlier and lasts longer. Stocking up on vitamins and calling about when flu shots will be available. Any helpful hints on how to avoid these things would sure be appreciated. I have Oust (or Lysol) and lecture the kids on hand washing but it didn't stop the germs last season.

well, most people really do not need a flu shot. only the old and frail. it's actually good to have our immune systems challenged once in a while. for example, some researchers have said that a major reason why allergy rates amoung children have been going up is that their environment has become TOO sanitized. their houses are sealed off from the outside and disinfectant and antibacterials are used everywhere. as a result, their bodies never have a chance to acquire the necessary immunities. these immunities are supposed to be developed during childhood.

but to answer your question, the single best thing you can do to avoid getting sick is to wash your hands a lot, which you are already doing. but really, plain old regular soap will do.

I use these packets of powder that you mix w/ a few oz of water. They contain 1100% of your daily Vitamin C! When I start feeling sick I take 2 of these a day & I never get sick

That's probably EmergenC. Great stuff. Comes in several flavors and has all your electrolytes as well.

Yep, cold season is here. I work in a general practice clinic and as SOON as the weather starts to change the colds arrive. I'm starting to fight one off myself and it' really interfering with my scent enjoyment. No good.

Also endurance sports like jogging or bicycling will help to strengthen the immune system - don't have to be jogging 20 minutes on every day (it doesnt hurt though ) - even sports on only every third or forth day will be of benefit.
Also going to a sauna (or other forms of thermal spas, hamam/steam baths, etc.) is an almost undefeatable combatant if you want to fend off those flu viruses, I can't think of anyone who's going to the sauna regularly who had a flu in the last years.

In the first minutes up untill an hour after sports or sauna one has to be extra careful though, because the immune system will be down at first. Oh, and if someone already has a flu, exerting himself will only do harm of course.
