Charlie and the Chocolate factory...what a P.O.S.!

Hi all,

Today, I saw the NEW WONKA movie with JOHNNY DEPP. I truly was hoping that I would enjoy this movie remake. Dear God...what a P.O.S.! I give this AWFUL movie (a generous 2 on a 10 scale) as compared to the WONDERFUL original WILLY WONKA and the CHOCOLATE FACTORY (with Gene Wilder). Now...I have enjoyed movies with DEPP but...he could just not even come close to the performance given by GENE WILDER as WONKA. I swear...I ALMOST walked out on this AWFUL movie! The ONLY part of the new movie I did get a kick out of was the SQUIRRELS! Just my two cents!

Regards,
SixCats!

hey SixCats!!

So you're saying we should just wait for the dvd?

Or is it just a complete stinker of a movie?

I too am a big fan of the original. Too bad this one seems not up to it (I've yet to see it though). Here is a Jim Emerson collection of reviews about the alleged Michael Jackson angle in the Depp character.

Kinda makes you wonder what Hollywood is going to do with the Poseidon remake. If it ain't broke don't fix it!

The original holds such sentimental value for me that I wouldn't see the remake if you told me it was mind-blowingly good. To me, Gene Wilder IS and will always be..Willy Wonka. Plus...those chompers on Depp for the remake are positively creepy, man! haha

Long live the original with all of it's 70s cheesiness! Love it!

"I said GOOD DAY, sir!!" haha

I liked it, mostly the first part. The fake acting matched the plastic sets. It's the Tim Burton movie with the most coherent story, does someone actually remembers the plot of Batman or Sleepy Hollow...? The only part I didn't like (and it wasn't even in the book) was the sickly sweet family values crap at the end of the movie.
Belgians are usually not the most enthusiastic kind of people, but there was some mild applause at the end of the screening (and it was an adult audience).

Definitely gonna see that one, as I am a huge fan of Tim Burton and I have liked pretty much everything he has done. I have never seen the 70's version, I don't particularly care for Gene Wilder (except maybe for his character in The Producers) so I won't be biased. Johnny Depp is always over the top, but I am actually more interested in Helena Bonham Carter's performance, she's always amazing.

And yes, I actually remember plots of both Tim Burton's Batmans and Sleepy Hollow. Top notch fun.

P.S. Tim Burton's version is not actually a remake of the 1st movie, in fact it's supposed to be closer and truer to the book. I don't think he was trying to update or base any of his characters on the Willy Wonka movie.

Having seen this movie last night, i must agree with SixCats!

There where some scattered chuckles here and there, but the pace was very s-l-o-w. Almost fell asleep a couple times.

Good thing i had free tickets.

Yeah, I had absolutely NO desire to see this movie. Never cared for Tim Burton's stuff that much anyway. Don't think he's ever done a single movie that was better than "eh."
Plus, Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka is probably the most perfect casting and performance ever put on celluloid. Unsurpassable.

I guess I'm in a minority here but I LOVED it. For those of you who are familiar with the book (it's a novel study in my class) the book itself is quite dark and this movie seemed to echo that quite well. It had Tim Burton all over it. I can see how people wouldn't like it. However after feeling that the original movie was a travesty and as an adult looking back, quite poor, this one was great. In addition the kids were WONDERFUL in terms of acting in the film.

It seems to get quite a good review - the book is so good, that Â*may be a film can never better it
