Batman Begins

I saw this in IMAX format this past Sunday. I've always liked Batman, especially when done in the more true to the character gritty style. I found this movie to be quite entertaining and sets up the re-envisioned franchise, saving it from the cheese and shlock it had become in the previous incarnations. The devices are ground more in realism than before, with the newest Batmobile being the most explicit example. No fancy fins, no sleek sports car inspired designed. Just a rough and rugged urban assault vehicle that is featured in of course, the mandatory car chase scene.

My only complaints were the modern day taste of cutting fight scenes into two second blurs, making it difficult to focus on what the hell was going on other than a bunch of ass whoopin'. I also didn't feel like any of the villains were strong enough characters, which I'm hoping they will remedy in the next movie. I think Christian Bale does a great job playing both Bruce Wayne and Batman, though the voice for Batman is a bit overdone, but not enough to bother me. There were also a couple of one liner attempts at humor that fell flat, but not enough to be distracting.

Overall, I'd give it a solid 4 out of 5, with anticipation that the solid foundation setup in this movie can lead towards better versions in the future, now that we don't have to muddle through the background, which was a necessary pre-requisite for this episode.

Just please get away from super fast cuts in the fight scenes!

I think this is the best Batman movie so far. I agree with you that the movie gave you a sense of realism. I also agree with you that the fight scenes were a complete mess, i couldn't see what was goin on, and i got dizzy watching. Christian Bale gave possibly his best performance since American Psycho, only problem was he was a bit short for Batman, maybe because he often stood next to Liam Neeson who stood an estounding 6'4. This is a new style of Batman movies, even took on new stories. The all-star cast was flawless, though Katie Holmes' character was kind of one dimensional. Overall, the best movie so far this summer, just have to wait and see War Of The Worlds.

Yes, this was the best Batman, the real Batman who is basically a vigilante with just a touch of heart. Even the mask was retro, like in the very early comics, more sinister than "camp". I agree with you both that the fight scenes were extremely disappointing, though. It's not that they were too fast, I think, but they were filmed so CLOSE to the camera that all you were sure of was that bad guys were dropping.

This Batman got the best reviews of any, so you have to think that the next one will be similar character-wise (hopefully with the same actor to give the series some desperately needed congruity) even though this one was supposed to be the first. This return to the (I feel) genuine Batman needs to continue in the next ones.

first batman movie i didn't hate. no dayglow colors, no rubber nipples.

frank miller helped on this one, so the movie stayed very true to his vision. the batmobile is straight out of his dark knight series (http://www.moebiusgraphics.com/comics/darkknight.php). though i have to say that sin city was even truer to miller's style.

I love the soundtrack by Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard.

Oh and by the way - Christian Bale is the coolest actor alive, and a really talented one as well!
