Recommendations for travel in Italy...

Since so many of you have been to Italy, what are your favorite destinations there? I'm going in a month and have no definite plans other than I have to be in Rome for 5 days, after that I have another 11 to drive around and will be flying out of Venice. I'd love to hear any recommendations. I know it won't be enough time to see everything, but I want ot put together at least a rough itinerary so I can budget out my time. Thanks for your input. I was camping in Italy last year at the Garda Lake. I can highly recommend a trip round the Garda to visit all the smaller towns (and there were surprisingly many scent shops). Especially Riva (and Bardolino) won my heart.
When you are there you are also close to Venice and Verona - those are nice places to visit as well.

If you should go to Sicily then make sure to visit Taormina.

Assisi is one of the most special places I have every visited. Not touristy at all. It truly has a "holy" aura. It's very simply laid out, with one street running from one end of the town to the other. At the city gate is the pink and white, gothic church of St. Clare. In the middle of the town is the ancient Roman temple of Minerva which is now a church. At the other end of the town is the basilica of St. Francis with the stunning frescoes by Giotto. They have done a magnificent job restoring the basilica after the tragic earthquake. In the crypt of the basilica is the tomb of St. Francis. So powerful, made moreso by the dazzling artwork of Lorenzetti. Assisi is a must-see.

I just got here in Italy today, so I may have some tips for you by the end of the week for Rome.
The first thing I can tell you is that food and drink is cheaper than in Paris, and heaps cheaper than in London, so you won't be blowing any budget on that score.

And by the end of the second day, I can't believe how many monuments and 2000 year old buildings are there to see - for absolutely free!
