What's worse than College Football's BCS?

Selection Sunday. ÊHorse-shit, horse-shit, horse-shit.

It's a travesty when teams like N.C. State, UAB, and Iowa make it when a mid major conference like the MAC, one of the more competitive conferences, only sends their tourney champ. ÊThe Eastern Division alone had 4 20+ game winners. Ê

Iowa didn't even have a winning record in their conference for crying out loud, and the Big Ten isn't that strong to begin with. Ê

What's the sense of having an RPI index if it's not used? ÊBuffalo and Miami of Ohio were rated 29th and 30th in the latest RPI. ÊIowa? Ê50. ÊUAB? Ê58. ÊNorth Carolina St.? Ê71. Ê

N.C. State finished 6th... that's 6th in the ACC. ÊIowa? Ê7th in the Big Ten. ÊUAB managed to finish 4th in Conference USA, but I'm not sure that's saying a lot.

This is a complete and utter travesty for the smaller programs. ÊCoach Weatherspoon of Buffalo said it best "take away our conference name and tell me how many get in." ÊReporter replies "Four". ÊCoach: "What's that?" ÊReporter: "Four get in". Ê

'Nuff said.

The NCAA tourney system is still far better than the college bowl system. So undeserving teams like NC State and Iowa make it instead of some mid major. Neither one will win the championship anyways. The games will be exciting, the team who comes out as the winner may not be the best team in the nation but has the best 6 game run to win it all.
I love the NCAA Tourney!!!

Ok, I admit exaggerating in comparing the two, but as a Buffalo Alumni, I have plenty of reason to gripe why a mid-major doesn't get the nod.

What exactly does it mean? It means loss of exposure which is probably the single greatest recruiting tool available to a coach. It also means a lack of respect, and in this regard, disrespect.

A trip to the field of 65 isn't a birth-right just because a team comes from a major conference. The committee chairman should be hung from the rafters, considering he's Iowa's Athletic Director and acknowledged teams such as Kansas and Gonzaga may have deserved better than a No. 3 seed. Others, like Maryland and Buffalo, maybe could complain they should have been included.

No shit sherlock! When your own school finishes 7-9 in Big Ten conference play and you're the chairmen of the selection committe, it makes you a big target for skepticism. Let's rewind that for a moment. 7-9 in Big Ten conference play...

This sort of record wouldn't even get them in the Tidy Bowl for football, so how the heck does it warrant a birth to the field of 65?

I'm an Arizona alum so I never have to worry about us not making the tourney
I think the lamest thing is the conference tournament winner getting an automatic bid, especially for mid majors. Oakland is 12-15 an got in while Oral Roberts got left out. Another mid major I forget which one was undefeated in the regular season conference but then lost one in their conference tourney and gets left out.
I agree with you that more mid majors should get in because they are good teams! Look how long it took for Gonzaga to get some respect and no longer be considered a cinderella team.

I said the same thing last year when my 22nd ranked Utah State Aggies were snubbed by that clueless selection committee with a record of 25-3 (17-1 in the Big West). But, it is still head and shoulders above the BCS in fairness. College football has really gone down the toilet because of the BCS. March madness is where it's at.

Speaking of teams not getting any respect. My dad's & brother's alma mater Georgia Tech. Yes, they made the tournament, but the never get respect from officials and the game that they lost today is no different. It's really sad that officials give respect to the same teams every year and ignore others who deserve it just as much but don't have the big name & reputation.

Sorry for the rant, I'd just like to see officials give these kids the benefit of a fair chance.

Didn't they lost to Louisville by like 20? I wouldn't blame the refs for that. Duke does get all the calls though.

That is my alma mater! Yesterday was horrible...they got their asses handed to them by Louisville, which I was sort of expecting, but not to that degree. Those guys can shoot the lights out and the most frustrating part to me was that Tech didn't have a solution in mind for the 2-3 Zone that took Schenscher out of the game, which is the one place where Louisville was horribly overmatched. They played great and I tip my hat to them. It will curious to see how Coach Hewitt handles losing 5 seniors and Jarrett Jack does playing with a whole lot of sophomores and freshmen next season.

As for the rest of the selections, its an imperfect system, but its still a great tournament. I mean, someone says NC State doesn't deserve to make it, yet they are in the Sweet 16 and the defending champions were sent home packing by the very same team. Granted, make it a 7 game series like the NBA and UConn would probably win. That is part of the charm of the second greatest sports tournament in the world (in my opinion...the World Cup is #1), the fact the little guys like Vermont, UW-Milwaukee, NC State and Bucknell get to show their talents.

Personally, I think this has been one of the best tournaments ever and I think it shows that college basketball has really grown and their is more parity across the country than most people think. Sure, I'm bias and will say I think the ACC is one of the top conferences, but nobody is the clear cut best. I mean, the Big East is great, but look, their top two teams (IMHO) aren't even playing anymore. Two of the top 4 ACC teams are in the same boat.
