A meteor is coming and we're all going to die: teacher tells pupils

LONDON (AFP) - A schoolteacher, attempting to motivate her pupils into making the most of each day, told them a meteorite was about to smash into the Earth and that they should all return home to say goodbye to their families.

The teacher at the high school in Manchester, only realised her lecture was misjudged when many of the assembled teenagers started crying, The Sun newspaper said Friday.

The unnamed female teacher made the announcement to around 250 pupils at St Matthew's Roman Catholic High School during their regular morning assembly.

Saying she had bad news, the teacher announced that a meteor would strike the Earth in 10 days' time, and that they should return home and say their "final farewells" to their parents.

After the crowd of 13- and 14-year-olds looked on in horror, and many burst into tears, the teacher swiftly explained that she was only trying to encourage them to "seize the day".

"Some of the children were 100 percent convinced they were going to die," the father of one child told the paper.

"God only knows what this teacher thought she was doing."

She could have used a more likely occurrence - for example, that Old Faithful at Yellowstone will eventually blow up - possibly taking all of mankind with it.

YES. REALLY. SERIOUSLY!

Here's just the first link I got from Google.

We had a talk on the subject of volcanos in the solar system by a Doctor in geology at my local astronomy club. It turns out we live on one of the most volcanic planets likely to exist anywhere - since a huge part of our top layer was ripped away in forming the moon - leaving a relatively very shallow surface above the molten core.

We were all quite surprised when he mentioned matter of factly that within the next 50,000 years, there will probably be a big blast at Yellowstone, and that it may be what turns out to be a planet killer event - the initial blast would wipe out half the US, but it would also obliterate the sky around the world for months to years.

:P In honor of that impending eruption, I'm going to have a big piece of apple pie with real, vanilla ice cream on top. Burp. :-X Maybe a slice of melted cheddar cheese, too . . .

i remember seeing a documentary recently about that. some researcher had spent a long time trying to find a volcano in the park. his break came when he saw some NASA imagery and realized that the whole park is essentially the crater of a giant supervolcano. and yes, i was terrified to learn that it's due for another eruption any day (well, any day in geological terms). it would cover half of north america in something like 6 feet of ash, not to metion block out the sun for the entire world. might as well blow your savings on that carribean supermodel orgy cruise while there's still time.

:P HI Liquid . . . I ate my apple pie a la mode, with relish. This year, I may not wait for final markdowns ... may hit my favorite stores and online outlets, earlier than usual . . .

Yes, that Doctor mentioned the 6 feet of ash as well. One thing I'm not too sure of though, is the planet killing part. If the super volcano blows every 600,000 years or so, there haven't been mass world wide species extinctions at that frequency - which implies that it may not be as bad as they say.

Well, it was nice while it lasted. Back to diets and final markdowns.
