Ambre Sultan - "Was it good for you?"

I've been pondering Artisankey's question regarding Ambre Sultan on this thread:

Try as I might, I just dont get the sex imagery from this one. Would like to know what others see in this one though (and could you hand me those rosy-porn-colored glasses please?) [smiley=cool.gif]

....and I'm realizing I agree with her to some degree. I spritzed a bit of Ambre Sultan on last night before turning in, and again this evening. I didn't originally find it a particularly 'sexy' fragrance (whatever that really means) and I notice I never list it as my favorite amber scent when we're compiling those lists.

When I'm pondering my favorite amber, I invariably think of L'Artisan's Ambre Extreme. I already had several other ambers when I received a little sample vial, and knew immediately that I must have a full bottle. There's a nearly crystalline clarity to it, unencumbered by extraneous notes. For many years, I've had a silver ring with a large chunk of clear, golden Baltic amber, and Ambre Extreme has always seemed like a manifestation of my favorite amber ring.

In contrast, Ambre Sultan lacks that purity: my first impression of it was that it was simply too medicinal. It reminded me of a little bottle of Tincture of Benzoin that my folks had in their medicine cabinet. When I went searching for the notes, I saw that it did contain benzoin (and a lot of other stuff):
"oregano, bay leaf, coriander, myrtle, angelica, patchouli leaves, amber,
cistus labdanum, styrax, Tolu balsam, benzoin, sandalwood, vanilla, musk"
*
And these notes seem to 'muddy it up' a bit: to make it a bit....unclean, if not
downright.....dirrty.[smiley=shocked.gif] [smiley=lolk.gif]
I'm not sure exactly when it made the transition from the medicine cabinet to the bedroom, but it happened to me when I realized that all those apparently extraneous notes that were added to my beloved amber seemed to convey a bit of human....funkiness. [smiley=evil.gif]

So my question is.....regarding Ambre Sultan....is its supposed sexiness all hype?
Do you believe the hype? (I know: questions, questions). [smiley=rolleyes.gif]

On another board I have always referred to Ambre Sultan as sex in a bottle.

I find most amber fragrances to be quite sweet and sugary, food like actually more vanilla. There are a few which are not that candy like,L'Occitane Ambre if you can get it in extract(now discontinued) it is smokey. L'Artisan Ambre Extreme is another non sweet but great amber.

Ambre Sultan has that dirty feel to it,wear it and there is no sugar and spice and all things nice. What you get with AS is sweaty and hot when the tempature rises and people wear less.

In the Perfume Guide by Susan Irvine she says of Ambre Sultan.

'Every so often a scent is launched which is supposed to smell of the odorata sexualis of a woman. This actually does. Remarkably - to some,repugnantly- it reeks of a woman's sexual juices.'

When I first sniffed AS I was immediately reminded of Vanisia by Creed. I have now tried AS on me and on cards on several ocassions and can't get away from Vanisia which I feel is a richer scent, it has more depth and is of better quality(IMO). I do like AS but V is a better investment. I certainly don't agree with Susan Irvine's decription of AS!!!!!!!!

I find amber highly sexual, except when it's mucked up with a lot of sweet ingredients. The benzoin and other ingredients in Ambre Sultan complement the amber perfectly. Ambre Extreme is another beautiful, drop-dead gorgeous amber. And, for a pure, no-holds-barred amber experience, you must try Madini oil ambargris, made from real chunks of ambergris. To me, all of these scents smell strongly of the sea, and they all make me salivate. They are the olfactory equivalent of Botticelli's painting, The Birth of Venus.

Great topic, Mark! [smiley=cheesy.gif]

Ambre Sultan - PHWOARGH!

I have and love many amber scents, Ambre Extrême, Ambre Précieux, L'Occitane Ambre, Etro Ambra. They are all lovely, Ambre Extrême perhaps being the most "ideal" ambre scent.

But Ambre Sultan is in a league of it's own, the top notes are very resinous and "burning" and then, instead of going suddenly all soft and smooth AS goes all down and dirty!

Yes, I find it very very sexy indeed. And that's an understatement. [smiley=rolleyes.gif] [smiley=wink.gif] [smiley=grin.gif]

Hmmm. I wonder about my body chemistry! On me, Ambre Sultan is a strong, pure amber fragrance. Not sexy or dirty at all. Generally, I find amber sexy in a warm kind of way. L'Artisan's Ambre Extreme and I Profumi de Firenze's Ambra del Nepal are my amber HGs. I'd love to attend a Basenotes Sniff-a-Thon, just to be able to smell how scents such as this smell on others.

Thanks for bringing this up Mark and thanks to everyone for "weighing in" on Ambre Sultan.

Was interested to read your take on benzoin Mark. Sometimes I forget that it does indeed have medicinal uses. I actually have a bottle of benzoin essential oil in my fridge and it doesnt get a lot of use since I read about its skin sensitizing properties. It makes me think of a combo between amber and vanilla- but in a flat, straightforward sort of way.

With Ambre Sultan, if I sample it on blotter, I can pick up some of the other herbal notes, yet on my skin it seems as if I've rubbed pure amber resin over it. It stays very true even as it dries down- I get nothing sexy or dirty. It's very smooth and almost caramel-like- gourmand perhaps. I do lump it in with my gourmand fragrances actually- didn't realize that till now. By comparison, Casmir (I consider it gourmand/Oriental) is sweeter on my skin and spicier, but it goes much more sensual on me with the synthetic castoreum note. While Ambre Sultan and Casmir are nothing alike, (I even tried layering them once to HORRIBLE effect) in my mind I think of them both as amber fragrances. Ambre Sultan the pure, golden perfume and Casmir the sweet, erotic one.

Perception continues to fascinate me. Thanks again everyone.

I have a sample of this and I must say to this day, it still isn't jiving with my nose. Am I missing something? Perhaps more testing is needed.

I bought a mini of AS and put it on my makeupalley swp list the day after it arrived. I was immediately, as in within a few minutes, inundated with swap requests for it. The persons wanting it were all quite perplexed about why on earth I could consider parting with it. My favorite amber is Ambre Extreme, followed closely by Ambra del Nepal with Calypso Amber trailing far behind. I knew I would never reach for it. I was somewhat amused to see the person I swapped with put it on her swap list within a few months. Serge has created many outstanding scents, but IMHO, this is not one of them.

Thanks, everyone, for your replies! [smiley=vrolijk_26.gif]
First of all, I see that there are several other ambers that I need to try soon.
I was especially struck by the pretty clear divergence between those of us
who found ourselves.....hot and bothered[smiley=embarassed.gif]....and
the rest of us who thought it "wasn't all that".
I feel fortunate that I've spent time in both camps.

I was craving Ambre Sultan again this morning while I was getting ready for work,
then saw that it would be 90 F (32 C) and decided I couldn't dare..... [smiley=evil.gif]

AS in 32 C sounds verry rrisky indeed. [smiley=evil.gif] [smiley=grin.gif]

IMO Ambre Sultan is to amber what Muscs Koublaï Khan is to musk. [smiley=wink.gif]

So far it hasn't "done" it for me.....
I did buy some Kuumber Amber Paste and a decant of Amber Precieux which I do like. The verdict is still out on the Amber Paste.......

I think I just like my amber in other things......
MUST try L'Artisan's Amber Extreme...
Glo, you must try Ambre Extreme. If Ambre Sultan didn't "do it for you" this one might. Also very good: I Profumi di Firenze's Ambra del Nepal (many etailers offer spot-on dupes of this. I ordered an oil from Sonoma Scent Studio and can't tell the difference between that and the original.)

I have a bottle of Ambre Sultan but don't wear it much. Recently I decanted some of it for someone and I got some on my hand and I loved it. MPG Ambre Precieux is still my favorite but I do think the Sultan has something sexy to it. I just discovered the ultimate amber/oudh sex monster combination in MPG Soir d'Orient which I was fortunate enough to get a whole bottle of. Unfortunately this is discontinued and was never sold anywhere outside of the UAE. It is really an amazing fragrance. I just don't get perfumers sometimes in what they choose to sell and discontinue.

I have a decant of this coming my way. I can hardly wait!!!

OMG! I love MPG Soir d'Orient! May I ask where you found a decant for sale? I agree that is is a sex monster (and I love that term! lol)

Back to Ambre Sultan. I think this is mad sexy! and my husband thinks so too. [smiley=wink.gif] I love to wear this when we go to a club or party, but I have worn it to work on occasion, just waaaay toned down. I think there must be some sort of aphrodisiac properties to it.

To me the cool thing about amber is that it can smell sexy in so many ways. It can be the "hot and bothered" kind of sexy or the whispering, trembly kind of sexy or something in between.

Hello Shadesofbleu,

I purchased my 1/3 oz decant from ipaidforthisname, but it was his last. I believe AZsmells (Adeel) has some available. He has a list on the swapboard. Good luck!

Gad yes, this stuff IS sexy IMO. Winter, incense, fireplace, bear rug, hot toddy, chase-the-old-fart-around-the-couch sexy.

But then a sexy person can wear just about any fragrance and, if it blends well with his/her chemistry, it will unconsciously trigger an olefactory memory response with the admirer forever; i.e., the fragrance of the Wearor will register in the Wearee's mind, relating that scent and the occasion, whether pleasant or unpleasant, to the Wearor forever [smiley=laugh.gif] [smiley=smiley.gif]. This is how memories are made - by the person who wears the scent, not the scent that wears the person.

So true, so true.

Yes, it's good for me! I recall one cold night this past winter...I was wearing it and my BF kept pushing my hair away from my neck and burying his face into that crook where neck and shoulder join, inhaling the A.S. and my skin mingling together. (Geez, my knees turn to jelly from that area being touched anyway! And somehow the A.S. scent added to the allure of that evening. Btw, that hollow between shoulder, collarbone and neck is one of my favorite places to apply fragrance, too!)

Patrick, that should get to you tomorrow or the day after.

I agree Soir d'Orient is a sex machine. I wish I had more, but I will never be able to replace my bottle, so I have to hord the rest of mine.

Thanks, Julian! I can hardly wait. And thank you for parting with your last drops of this precious elixir. I will use it only for the most special occasions.
