I've been pondering Artisankey's question regarding Ambre Sultan on this thread:

....and I'm realizing I agree with her to some degree. I spritzed a bit of Ambre Sultan on last night before turning in, and again this evening. I didn't originally find it a particularly 'sexy' fragrance (whatever that really means) and I notice I never list it as my favorite amber scent when we're compiling those lists.
When I'm pondering my favorite amber, I invariably think of L'Artisan's Ambre Extreme. I already had several other ambers when I received a little sample vial, and knew immediately that I must have a full bottle. There's a nearly crystalline clarity to it, unencumbered by extraneous notes. For many years, I've had a silver ring with a large chunk of clear, golden Baltic amber, and Ambre Extreme has always seemed like a manifestation of my favorite amber ring.
In contrast, Ambre Sultan lacks that purity: my first impression of it was that it was simply too medicinal. It reminded me of a little bottle of Tincture of Benzoin that my folks had in their medicine cabinet. When I went searching for the notes, I saw that it did contain benzoin (and a lot of other stuff):
"oregano, bay leaf, coriander, myrtle, angelica, patchouli leaves, amber,
cistus labdanum, styrax, Tolu balsam, benzoin, sandalwood, vanilla, musk"*
And these notes seem to 'muddy it up' a bit: to make it a bit....unclean, if not
downright.....dirrty.[smiley=shocked.gif] [smiley=lolk.gif]
I'm not sure exactly when it made the transition from the medicine cabinet to the bedroom, but it happened to me when I realized that all those apparently extraneous notes that were added to my beloved amber seemed to convey a bit of human....funkiness. [smiley=evil.gif]
So my question is.....regarding Ambre Sultan....is its supposed sexiness all hype?
Do you believe the hype? (I know: questions, questions). [smiley=rolleyes.gif]

I recall one cold night this past winter...I was wearing it and my BF kept pushing my hair away from my neck and burying his face into that crook where neck and shoulder join, inhaling the A.S. and my skin mingling together. (Geez, my knees turn to jelly from that area being touched anyway! And somehow the A.S. scent added to the allure of that evening. Btw, that hollow between shoulder, collarbone and neck is one of my favorite places to apply fragrance, too!)
