Coffee recs for an ULTIMATE thread

Hi guys-

Im planning on doing a huge overview of coffee-noted scents, a la the Tribute to Classics thread or the Vetiver Redux or the ULTIMATE Basenotes ____ threads. So far I have the following to consider:

Jo Malone Black Vetiver Cafe
Ava Lux Cafe Noir (thanks again b94new!)
L'Artisan L'Eau du Navigateur
Bond 9 New Haarlem (and to a lesser extent Rochas Man, A*Men and HM)

I'm trying to get my hands on some samples or decants of Coinfluxe's Homme de Cafe and Escada's Casual Friday, but Ive decided to forego CDG's Wood Coffee, as many of the reviewers I most respect have reported that it is a coffee-scent in name only.

Anybody have any others to recommend?

Nice idea!

I love New Haarlem myself.

I also get a dark roast in Borneo, although it is not mentioned in the notes. Dark cocoa and coffee and then patchouli.

You might look at Cafe Noir by Dawn Spencer Hurwitz, which has coffee in the base.

I, too, would consider A*men in this category. You should also be sure to try Yohji Homme and L'Artisan's L'Eau de Navagateur as part of any comprehensive study of coffee-based scents. Good luck, and I will really look forward to your review, even if I don't drink coffee myself.

I think most have been covered. I just have to say New Haarlem has the BEST and most standout coffee note I've ever smelled.

If you are going to include L'Artisan L'Eau du Navigateur, which is now discontinued I believe, then it might be useful to also include Eau des Îles by Maître Parfumeur et Gantier. It has the same coffee note, is quite similar to the L'Artisan, and is still available for purchase.

I love coffee and am looking forward to the results you come up with. It should make for interesting reading.

I think it does. I'll also second Eau des Îles from MPG, as well as Coze from Parfumerie Generale.

"L de Lolita Lempicka" - the opening notes are quite similar to the "coffee-caramel-chocolate" notes of "New Haarlem" (both perfumes created by Maurice Roucel).

As I recall, Donna Karan's Be Delicious has a coffee note.

It seems to be despised around here, so I'm prepared for some abuse.

Don't forget Finjan... it's just delicious... for a sample contact darling Ayala as she may be able to send it to you... It really is something unforgettable...

as someone else describibed it: "It's deep dark spice-tinged coffee with golden honey."

I think coffee note in Yohji Homme is very unique of it`s kind: it`s not that obvious as in, let`s say Rochas Man or New Haarlem, but it is very very unique and fascinating.
Overall, Yohji is extremely unique blend IMO. Too bad it`s a bit too subtle...

Also, my SotD was Time for Peace (Kenzo) and although it doesn`t say in actual pyramid, check this out: (directly from Perfumewordl)

I agree with this description, although to me this scent smells more like chestnuts mixed with vanillic flowers.

Tigs & Shift- the Directory's reviews lead me to believe that Wood Coffee could be left off the list because coffee plays such a miniscule role in the composition... do you guys think I should get some?

I get a distinct Coffee note in SL Chergui blended with an 'aqueous' accord similar to that in D&G By Woman. This maybe only to my nose but it is distinct enough to have encouraged me to seek out other perfumes with a distinct coffee note.

Thank you for sorting this out & I look forward eagerly to the results.

NB. I am still seeking coffee dominated perfumes to broaden my collecti on.

What about Bond's So New York? I haven't sniffed it yet, but it mentions espresso amongst the notes.

I also recommend 'So New York' by Bond No. 9. I think I might try to locate a decant of 'So New York' because it is so enjoyable. The coffee note is just right, not overpowering, and it is combined so well with the patchouli, the woods, the musk, and the cocoa.

It is listed in the direcory as a feminine scent, but in my opinion, it is definitely unisex.

I am drinking a cup of hot coffee right now... nothing beats really coffee's smell!

Its interesting that sandalwood and incense fragrance can sometimes smell like coffee, while those with coffee accord have not a hint of coffee in it.

I will add Chanel's Allure pour homme. This one always remind me of cafe, the dry down has that cafe mood - its got a classic cream coffee feel to it.

Once when I was at a department store, a sales assistant was pushing this Be Delicious on me. She said "Its very unique, its the only perfume with coffee in it!" She must think that I am a moron. I reluctantly let her spray my wrist and I told her I only smell apple, she replied "Yes, yes, theres apple in it too, its very fresh. Its very popular, Be Delicious is the best new fragrance...etc."

I walk away, went to the men's room and washed away the scent. I never tried Be Delicious again, never get to the drydown to know if theres really coffee in it.

Ambre Narguilé does not have coffee as one of its listed notes, but I get a pronounced coffee vibe from it. A creamy type of coffee.
