Thoughts on Creeds

Ive only been in the fragrance world for a few months and like many newcomers I quickly became intrigued by the great House of Creed. The history, the celebrity, the extravagance, the lovely descriptions and, of course, the haters, how can ones interest not be captivated? I have yet to post a critique of a fragrance and figured where better to start than Creed. I have not purchased any full sized falcons of a Creed, but I have ordered several samples and I would like to share some thoughts in this post. Surely, with a fragrance house of this magnitude, conjecture, opinion, admonishment and sacrosanctity will follow.

Acier Aluminum: Unlike some, I love the initial blast of AA. Definitely a unisex fragrance with a cool sweetness that is intense and sensual. Sorry to get graphic, but the scent reminds me of sexual encounter I had when I was 22 with a woman my mothers age. The experience was so deviant, yet so thrilling. Unfortunately, like the thought of a long-term serious relationship with a much older woman, the scent goes sour on my skin after a few hours.

Himalaya: To me this one smells a lot like Platinum Egoiste and I think Platinum smells like a subdued version of Eternity for men (Calvin Klein). Of these fragrances, I think Platinum carries the theme the best, but my connotations with Eternity are too strong for any of them to be redeemed.

Millésime Impérial: Being a Gen-Xer, maybe I was exposed to too much Calvin Klein while growing up, but I can only think of Escape when I smell this one. They are different, but both have similar fruity notes. To be honest I think I like Escape better because of the balls-to-the-walls mentality with its unabashed synthetic nature.

Baie de Genièvre: This one is an absolute gem. If I had the budget, I would always have a falcon of this stuff on hand and wear it whenever I needed to do some hardcore manual labor. The stuff makes me just want to go outside and chop some wood. Its that manly.

Silver Mountain Water: I cant even remember what this stuff smelled like it was so average.

Bois du Portugal: Im on the bandwagonsophisticated and classy.

Original Vetiver: Im probably going to purchase a falcon of this. I love the earthiness of the initial blast. It makes me feel like Im getting something of natural genuine quality, much like brewing a batch of organic green tea, freshly imported from Asia (not the scent, the experience). It dries down to that lovely barbershop scent. This is a nice scent that achieves what most Department store scents achieve, in just being pleasant to most noses, yet this one achieves it with a little more character. I would gladly have people recognize this scent as my signature.

Sorry for the long post, hopefully you get through it and opine your heart out.

You definitely chose some good ones to start your Creed journey. I only recently became acquainted with Bois du Portugal, and, like you, am on the bandwagon. Acier Aluminum is finally coming into it's own, after some years of living in the shadow of the "great" Creeds, Green Irish Tweed, Millesime, and a few others. One I also recently discovered is Cypres Musc, a scent reminiscent of forest greenery with a slightly sweet musk - very nice. Only problem is that unless you get a decant, you must buy the "five gallon jug," a.k.a. the 8.4 oz flacon for like $280. Creed was one of my first forays into higher-end fragrances, and whether you like all of them or not, you'll have loads of fun!

LOL....really funny but AA has been on my to try list for a long time. I think someone posted a comment a long time ago where he got lucky with a stripper or a stripper really liked it. I can't remember the details but I put this one on my to try list. I got a decant of this just today in the mail, an extra a friend sent and I'll wear it as my SOTD tomorrow. Thanks for the description.

As for the other Creeds, all nice stuff but a little boring for me. Being too nice isn't good.

Sorry, I haven't tried all those ones yet...I only found GIT, SMW, New Tabarome, OV a little boring. They're nice but I need something more.

But I'm guessing the Vintage or even older stuff might smell better, because I really like Vintage Tabarome.

That's funny about the stripper thing Nsamadi. In the Acier Aluminum reviews section on this site people talk about the film Eyes Wide Shut and the term decadence is tossed around as well. I read the reviews before I tried the fragrance, so my experience with the scent may have been influenced by the words I read, but there seems to be something wicked going on with this subtle scent. Its not sex in a bottle, its DIRTY SEX in a bottle. Sorry, the stuff brings out the pornographer in me.

So impressing or scoring with a "stripper" is your justification for wanting to wear a scent?

C'mon...not really. I only wear scents for myself but I also wondered what strippers might like . I read that post a really long time ago and put AA on my to try list.

I've been very much in a Creed state of mind lately. I've been rotating between Millesime Imperial, Himalaya, and Original Vetiver on a daily basis.

First off. I'm wearing Himalaya right now. This is strange but I was gonna come on here and mention that Himalaya has something in common with CK Eternity for Men (except better). It has shades of Eternity, but it conjures up the color "purple" to my nose. Plus, all the girls who've ever sniffed my wardrobe have always thought Himalaya to be the absolute best or maybe third best, at the very least.

Also, I've been wearing the hell out of MI lately. It's just excellent stuff. It's a fresh citrus, but not boring IMO. It plays the same game as all the Aqua di Gio's and co., but it puts them all to shame. It's a sexy scent because it's got some real dirt lurking in there amidst the sunshine. Hey, and I never get tired of looking at that golden bottle.

I like how Creeds wear though. That 'washed out' quality. Not like you just sprayed them on, but like a classiness that emanates from your pores, maybe.

Creed perfume has a quality thats hard to define. Its got an old world charm, which can be translated as - raw, dirty and organic. Without that house-note, all Creed will lose their appeal. There are only 5 that I really like from this house: GIT, MI, SMW, BdP and OV. Royal Water is so ornate and feminine I don't know why its labelled as unisex, it smells like Lacroix's C'est la vie! The rest I can appreciate their quality but not wanting them for myself.

Of all the niche (this term is relative, I still think Creed is niche), Creed stood out because of its noble smell. To be honest, I don't think Creed is a creative company, their attractiveness is their strong character presented in their packaging and that elusive house-note. L'Artisan is another house I admire, but its a cosy, nostalgia perfume company - Creed on the other hand is larger than life. Its like comparing a ceiling fresco with a painting on the wall. They have their own place in the market, it all depends on what you are after.

Hi xirdneh69,

I seem to gravitate to the classics as well. Love Baie de Genièvre and Bois du Portugal, Millésime Impérial is a very good aquatic but pales in comparison to the others, I believe. Found Royal Water awful and like New Tabarome quite alot. But my favorite, which I highly recommend, is still Royal English Leather.

Which of us that like some of Creed's scents are "overestimating" them?

Just curious how you're able to know that.

I guess its all relative - in my opinion, the other big popular house amongst the basenoters, L'Artisan, produces creative but mostly unwearable fragrances. For me, Creed strikes the best balance between creativity and wearability. Others might think otherwise.

I have to agree with ZZ here. One of my big attractions to Creed is their quality crafting balanced against wearability. I haven't smelled their whole line nor have I smell L'Artisan's entire line, but I know I own 1 bottle of Creed and lust after a few more while I'm not sure I need to smell anything else from L'Artisan. I actually regret one Diptyque purchase (and Diptyque is even a little less crazy than LA) because it is just too abstract for regular wear for me.

I like a lot of the Creeds, including Silver Mountain Water, Bois de Portugal and Selection Verte etc. They are among my favourite scents.

In comparison, there are not many among the L'Artisan range that stand out much to me.

Have you tried:
1. Navagateur
2. Dzing!
3. Passage D'Enfer
4. Navegar
5. Mure et Musc Extreme
6. Voleur de Roses
7. Tea for Two

I'm also a very strong Creed fan...but there are several L'Artisans that are very much standouts: Fou d' Absinthe being my #1 of them...Tea for Two, Passage D'Enfer, Mechant Loup, Navegar, L'eau, they are all very much stand outs...maybe not, if you're looking for a sillage wake behind you, but they are great for what they are meant for...close proximity...
