Your vote for the KING of colognes

What is your vote for the KING of colognes? You can pick any men's fragrance, current or discontinued, and you can interpret the circumstances to what you consider would qualify a scent for KING in any way you like, as long as you explain why. I'm not asking what your favorite fragrance is, I'm asking which cologne is THE KING!

My first vote is for Creeds Bois du Portugal. Sure I'm up Creed's ass a bit, and sure BdP is a recent (albeit exciting!) purchase for me, so I admit my bias. But I think that Bdp has an undeniable masculinity, refinement, and luxury about it. It is unique and creative, balanced all the way through it's long life span, versatile, and creates a signature presence for the wearer, perceived by those nearby. It is classy and elegant, while maintaining it's ruggedness and masculinity, and stands with timeless character.

For me, Bois du Portugal barely edges out Polo for the title. Polo has most of the characteristics I'd merit to Bdp, but to discover BdP is an occurrence that might only happen for a small fraction of the population, and hence it conveys a higher exclusivity and status. Not to mention the price difference and the supposed ingrediant quality of the BdP.

Whats your vote?

I would have to say Kouros.

Rive Gauche. It just says, "Hey I'm here, and I'm gonna kick your ass. BUT I'm just gonna be so damn cool about it."

Two things Thrax -

You made me laugh out loud when I read that, and also made me want to give it another try!

Chanel Antaeus hands down. It's been my favorite for a very long time. First of all, because it's a dry woods/leather scent, which is the height of elegance for me. It's also very refined, with its combination of myrtle, clary sage, patchouli, labdanum, and sandalwood. Rich beyond expectation... and redolent of quiet masculine confidence. It has an indisputably stately presence.

It conjures up images of supremely happy and important moments; of evening clothes and elegant soirées; of quiet contentment during celebrations with loved ones.

It's a true classic and *always* turns heads, and always in sincerely impressed admiration.

Santal Noble I would say. It's not going to kick anyone's ass. It's going to smirk to itself and send it's personal security detail to coolly and efficiently dispose of the offender. They will all be wearing Rive Gauche.

Rive Gauche will burn SN down, piss on the ashes and promclaim in a voice that shakes the earth, "HAHAHAHAHA! He who laughs last smells best!"

As for me, I've never got the chance to smell SN, but I really wanna!!

I don't really expect anyone to agree with me here, but my vote for the King of Colognes goes to Lolita Lempicka au masculin. Now this isn't the king in the Arthurian questing warrior sense, this is Charles the second. The aristocracy is steeped in decadence, virile, lush, a statesman and a patron of the arts. LL is not a scent that would raise a sword against its enemies, it would invite them to the court and exploit them instead.

I really cannot put into words how well this scent works on me, girls follow me around at clubs, I notice people taking deep breaths when I'm wearing it. Even my male friends comment on it, I have a buddy who fixes speed boats for a living and rides dirt bikes for fun and he told me I smelled amazing.

Its everything I've been looking for in a fragrance, foody, boozy and rich with warm vanillic undertones. Its almost narcotic, I bought it about a month ago and it is without question my signature, of course I still give a lot of play to the rest of my wardrobe, how could I not, but I reach for LL more often than not.

While I consider Geir to be my signature scent, my king of scent is without a doubt Knize Ten. After all, it is "The Gentleman's Toilet Water" (read the bottle/box).

Vintage Tabarome's reverie is interrupted by a tinny clamour. He shifts on his throne so better to see down into the murky, smog wreathed valleys below. "Hmmph, another king of colognes contest?" He smiles to himself and turns away, and in that moment dreams yet another world into existence.. It's good to be king.

Kouros.

Well you said interpret King the way I want. So, not that I worship a King, but if I did, it would be Serge Lutens Fumerie Turque. Yes, it is my newest scent, but it moves me. Simple as that. It is the last one of my collection Id give up, and I get more compliments with GIT - maybe that is the prince or king in training, lol.

IF we look historically, wow, you would have to look at a cologne in the light of its seminal influence in changing how colognes are viewed, or the first that shed light on perhaps aldehydes, or something that is along those lines. I dont profess to be a scent historian (scentorian?) but something by Guerlain, maybe 4711, something that harkens back to a time when scent was viewed differently rather than what happens now (such as, I am Calvin Klein and why not relaunch Obsession, with a twist, because I am on a one-scent-a-year kick).

Cartier Santos or Gucci pour Homme The Gucci is a little short lived, but takes on a completely different dimension when re-applied 2 hours after the initial application. The combination of the top notes and dry down are pretty interesting without being outrageous.

I don't know which Santos I have, but if the original is better than what I have, it will be the unchallengeable King.

Sorry they aren't Super Niches', but they are niches non the less, as for Super Niche King...I'll go with Burt's Bee's Bay rum cologne.

It is interesting that when people nominate frags in this thread they go into an explanation of why it is the "King of colognes", barring one frag, which requires no explanation as to why it is the King....... KOUROS!!!

If there is no unisex then I could go for Gucci ph probably.

Jules by Christian Dior
Numero Uno by Carthusia
Panama 1924 by Boellis
Magellan by Fragonard
Baladin by Patricia de Nicolaï

When I think of King I think of powerful, regal, and somewhat formal. Therefore, I am shocked that neither Nino Cerruti Pour Homme nor Zino Davidoff have yet to be mentioned.

A four-way tie: JHL by Aramis, Leonard Pour Homme, Millesime Imperiale by Creed and Havana Reserva by Aramis.

Gonna have to go with Leonard Pour Homme. An unconventional choice, perhaps, but there ya have it.

I cannot make up my mind between four French ones plus one Italian, or five from France! To single one out would be unfair to the other four. All except one are ExDP.
