Hi all,

I'm curious as to what you guys do for a living. Feel free to share or not to share past jobs, current jobs, or future jobs. Currently I'm in my 3rd year of college studying biology. I plan to attend optometry school after my undergrad studies. I have a job on campus as an office assistant in the ecumenical institute so I just collate and prepare folders, make scans and copies, and do a lot of miscellaneous paperwork.

You guys/gals?

I am a microbiology technician. I do r&d, grow, and kill bacteria for a biotech startup that is using non-food waste to generate ethanol for fuel.
I am also currently retaking undergrad classes so that I can get into nursing school. I want to work in critical care and eventually go into a CRNA or nurse practitioner program.

Unfortunately, outside of NYC it is hard to make a living doing that so I also have a day job.

Fortunately I enjoy it. I manage a wholesale cut flower broker/ wholesaler. I supply flowers for flower shops, event planners, caterers, wedding event shops, etc in MS, TN, and AL. It is rarely boring, and it is hard to be in a bad mood when I am in the 5000 sq ft flower cooler looking at all that beauty.

Not surprisingly, I have a soft spot for flowers with a big scent. I'm loving that garden roses are becoming very popular in wedding/event work. I got in a variety from Ecuador today that was a white garden rose called Heiress that smelled like heaven. If you could bottle it you would have a best seller.

After 13 days straight of crazy hours I'm in Valentine HELL and seriously questioning my career LOL

Will have moved right at 100k stems of roses through my little location since Wednesday. Hopefully thanks to the florists we supply, should be a lot of happy Valentine recipients in North Mississippi, West Tennessee, and West Alabama.

This made me laugh...also, do you have any pictures of watches you've made? I enjoy looking at watches (occasionally buying)...
It's odd this topic came up and I saw it. Today they called me three times! You can be nice, you can be gruff. Don't matter they still call, day after day. They've learned how to get around Mr. Number the blocking app. Those Brafty Castards!

About the watches, I have several pics but not online since the insurance lady found out I had some on photobucket she frowned on it. If you want to see the bench I built to do small production runs I'll PM you the link to that. I see it's still online. But unfortunately at 12 pieces per run they're not exactly in the affordable category. Only ten are able/fit to market.

It's been a few months since I joined the forum, and I've come to realize that this hobby can be much more expensive than I had ever imagined, especially with all the niche and vintage offerings out there. Yet I find that most members don't have too much trouble shelling out hundreds of dollars on fragrances to add to their already extensive collections...

I have come to the conclusion that we probably have some very successful members here on the forum, so I thought I'd start a thread for people to share their stories of success and possibly share a bit about what they do and how they got there.

I'll start...

I graduated the University of Toronto as an East Asian Studies specialist, where I studied Mandarin and Japanese. I studied at Kyoto University in my third year, and returned to Japan after I graduated to work/improve my Japanese. I ended up managing a bar in Kyoto (wish I would have had some good fragrances back then...), then I returned back to Canada for a little bit, but soon returned to Japan after getting a job offer at a digital music distribution company in Tokyo. I worked there for another year, but was not satisfied with my salary so I decided to pursue law school.

Currently I work at a claims center at an insurance company, and I'm waiting on responses from law school. So far I'm waitlisted at the University of Tennessee so I'm praying I get in!

Also, I just received my certificate for the Japanese Language Proficiency Test Level N1, which is the highest level possible, so I'm feeling pretty good about myself right now, even though life isn't as good as I hoped it would be at 27.

Eventually I want to return to Japan as a lawyer, but to be honest I'm dying to get back now. I love it and would be happy to give advice to anyone planning on going there!

Anyway...

Who's next?

Some people spend a majority of their disposable income on perfumes whereas others may spread the their disposable over several hobbies.

Congrats on the N1!

I just realized that I haven't been on BN for a loooong time.

I'm a software contractor, and work mostly in the financial sector. My primary focus is artificial intelligence (e.g. neural networks and recently, genetic algorithms). I've recently also branched out into network security, since there is currently lots of funding for defense against cyberwarfare attacks, particularly in the wireless arena.

Very interesting! I'd like to know better about this subject, but it's kinda too much for my head. My motherboard burns and becomes unusable.

I just read this entire thread and am amazed by all the super smart folks and variety of professions. My favorite post has to be Astaroth's- "I pay a lot of taxes". LMAO. Sometimes it does seem that's why we work.

My job has been at the local Housing Authority in various capacities for 23 years. I'm at the wind -down stage of my career and am looking forward to taking a hammer to my alarm clock upon retirement.

Daaaaang ... I remember that post. I'm fairly certain I had just written Uncle Sam a big check at that time. I have learned to not get upset about these things anymore, since life is too short.

Ain't that the truth. Being upset only makes the auditor happy, anyway.

"Entitlement-spending." Haha, most of it actually comes from student loans/welfare etc (which one never really have to pay back). Need to smell something or I can't live, you dig? Human rights issue absolutely, that's why they make them so generous here in Sweden.
