Basenotes vs X?

Well, this question occured to me today while I was thinking of new frags to buy, and I think it deserves an answer.

Any basenotes regular can recognize many scents and abbreviations: CdG, SL, YSL, FM, TM, LV, D&G, RL, PdN, MPG; RG, T4T or TfT, GIT, OV, VdR, etc, etc...

These are scents that are mainstays for us; some--like GIT or Geir--rise and fall in popularity (and post count) every now and then. There is indeed a huge variety of frags worn by us basenoters, but the head of the graph is much larger than the tail (so to speak). That is, something like 80% of frag use is taken up by 20% of the frags available. It's been a while since I've read about anything that I didn't recognize.

Since every community has its own personal quirks and idiosyncracies, I'm willing to bet that the basenotes favorites might be different from other fragrance forums/websites (this is as a whole, now- not individuals). I don't go to any other fragrance websites, so I don't know.

To the people who DO visit other fragrance sites (or who work in the business): How does basenotes compare with other communities, in terms of favorite frags? Is there another website out there that never talks about GIT but that regularly dwells on, say, Skai or Corduroy?

Are we fencing ourselves in by constantly discussing the same frags- or are we actually just talking about the only frags that really deserve the discussion? When new users arrive, we tell them to buy GIT or TfT or Daim Blonde- is this appropriate (or useful)?

I love the discussions here, and this is certainly not a "I don't want to hear about X anymore" post. It would, however, be nice to have some 'fresh air'. Or, on the other hand, maybe there isn't really anything fresh and new worth talking about outside of our routine. I'll let you guys decide.

Stay warm-

You mean there's a world outside BN? C'mon...

Actually, how many other male fragrance forums are there, really?

I couldn't find much out there before Basenotes. Whats that other one?.. Makeup alley, nope didn't find that.

I was reading reviews at Amazon.com before I came here, and one or two other threads on boards dedicated to other subjects.

Mainly we are talking about AdG being the all-star. Retail Frags. I never heard the name 'Creed' before I came here.

Here is one sample: http://www.becomeaplayer.com/playercologne.htm
Google Keywords : Best Men's Cologne... when you use the word 'Fragrance' you get Basenotes.

Basenotes just blows 'em away in depth and experience, but it does have some sort of character to it's tastes, judging by posts. I get the impression it is an aficionados taste. Serge Lutens is a great example, it's a fragrance for fragrance lovers (not really for Players). It even say's so on there web site, and I truly get that from SL. I can't see Ambre Sultan taking over AdG or other retail giants in the general publics wardrobe.
The taste's of Basenotes favorites is definitely never safe though. It's for the frag lover.

P.S. What does Nihil Obstat Ben mean, I could research it but would rather get it from the source.

I think you have a really good point. Im sure if this were a purely middle eastern or asian forum the recomended scents would be different on the whole.

You cant help but be influenced when everyones raving about a certain scent too....its human nature

I think perfumeemporium has decussions, however i believe they are just reviews and nothing close to BN. My questions is does anyone place reviews eleswhere i.e. perfumeemporium.com etc? just curious and no point intended to steal the thread.

Great question Ben!

I've often wondered what male French perfume enthusiasts would discuss. Parisians in particular have access to nearly everything. Would they have a similar interest in all those acronyms you mentioned? I guess we won't know until they either 1) join Basenotes or 2) create a community of their own. If these people do exist (I suppose they do) they're awfully silent about their passion...

I'm also very interested in what people in the perfume business think about the latest offerings on the market. The ones I've talked to/met in person tend to stay close to their own products, and don't go around sampling everything they get their hands on when they're "off duty". They know and appreciate the classic formulations, but ask them about mass market offerings by Hugo Boss or Lacoste, and they either raise their shoulders or start looking really sad.

Basenotes covers a wide spectrum, I think. But there's a language barrier that keeps a lot of interesting people away from this site. And there's much more out there than we effectively discuss.

As long as new releases keep on coming, the board would not be stagnant. This is the only community where men can come and share their fragrance hobbies, so i do feel sympathetic about this situation. I really dont know what deserves to be talked about and what does not, but i do believe that fencing ourselves is possible through subjectivity. Perfumeoflife is another good fragrance community, but dominated by women. Their discussion tends to get repetitive as well, though they might be based on different topics.

I think it's inevitable to be repetitive. Our curiosity far surpasses our creativity when the contents of a subject seems to be finite. However, the board is refreshing in the sense that one can constantly hear about the difference of opinions on a repetitive topic. In a way, the board is driven by the opinions of these wonderful basenoters rather than their topics.

Keep them new releases coming though!

There was some weird site I came across about being a modern dandy. It even had a quiz. They had a few threads on fragrance, but nothing in-depth.

I was wondering myself earlier today if there isn't anything on "ask andy about clothes" in the forums on fragrance. If you think you have a spending problem dropping $200 or more on a fragrance, how about those guys dropping north of $5k on a single suit? Anyone else looked over that site?

It's mangled latin for "nothing obstructs Ben". There is a long story behind it, but it is dry/academic enough kill the whole thread

Inbreeding can't be avoided. Also bugs spread easily, like in a plant nursery. Nobody is immune. New posters are sent to a special training camp and get streamlined from the beginning. All that has its pros, but cons as well.

I guess it happens to anybody after his first or second year: subjects and fragrances come and go like the waves to the shore. Everything becomes almost too predictable. Even more controversial subjects like what is suitable for men to wear, Kouros' frag notes, Creed's buisiness practice...

It takes exceptional ideas and courage to come up with new suggestions. Not everybody is ready to fight, or survive the frustration of being ignored.
Members are more tolerant than they have been two years ago. But a few societies are making that move anyway. More is still possible and desirable.

A discussion like this cannot be complete without the voice of those members who left BN in frustration, or silent protest.
But there is no alternative to BN. There is no other men's board. In short: this the best place for cologne guys to be!
