What cologne would you buy for your son as his first?

You can pick the age and the fragrance. Tell us what fragrance you'd give him and why.

I'll start by gifting a bottle of Diesel ++ and/or L'eau Par Kenzo when he was about 12 or so. Both are very youthful smelling and would fit nicely on him. Anything heavier could be overused and abused. I also think it would make him stand out to the girls as a departure from all the other guys wearing Kenneth Cole 2013 or (god help me if it's still popular...) Acqua di Gio!

(btw, "he" doesn't exist yet!)

I've got two daughters, 16 and 20. The 20 year old is not at all into fragrances so I know that she would not use anything that I got her. My younger daughter, on her 16th birthday I gave her a box with about 40 different fragrance samples in it and told her to test them and I would get her a bottle of anything she selected.

Fragrance is such a personal thing that I hate to give someone a bottle as a gift unless I know they already like that fragrance. So giving her the sample collection I got her to start appreciating different fragrances, smelling the differences and experiencing the range of scent which is available. Best of all she will get a fragrance that she really likes. Thus far she has not gotten back to me on which one she wants but she has been having fun with all the samples.

PdN Petit Ange while he's still in the crib! (just kidding).

I always thought Jil Sander Sun Man was a young, fresh, energetic scent that nevertheless wasn't like the general herd of fresh/sporty scents. I'd probably give him that when he was old enough, if for nothing else than to initiate him inexpensively into the world of Jil Sander, whose clothes kept his dad's wallet empty for years. Other than that, I'd probably have great fun taking him to a fragrance boutique and just letting him sniff. I'd POLITELY push him towards Guerlain, but heck, if he liked 4711, all the better...

Thierry Mugler - Cologne Age 10

This could open the door to Millesime Imperial or Angel Men, which would also teach proper application .

My eldest son is 6 and regularly get a spritz of some citrus or other (when he asks for it).

Come on, what's the point? They'll only succumb to peer pressure, snub your choice of fragrance and then beg you to buy them a bottle of Acqua di Giò pour Homme!

Maybe that burberry baby fragrance thats made of 100% natural hypoallergenic stuff. I'd imagine that would work for a 5 yr old kid. I swear, this hobby/addiction is gonna bite me in the ass someday (Reminds me of this one scrubs episode where JD imagines his future son having a coffee addiction like he does)

Weird, I was thinking the same thing before clicking on the thread.

Basically start him off with any aquatic since they are more "beginner-friendly", then he can develop his own taste.

If it's the case of a baby: what's the point? the mother would be all over my case.

Well, I have 2 children, a boy and a girl. They are 4 and 7 and , as children do, tend to watch their parents even when the parents don't perceive it. Mine, like their father, have developed a love of fragrance already :-). My son , I think tends to like the bottles and asks me to give him some "spray dad" and Ive caught him several times getting into my colognes. Here's the funny thing , it's always either Armand Basi or Jazz prestige- I guess he likes the black and white theme and relatively large bottles. Now my daughter is a different story. She actually knows what she likes and yikes , I better get another job. Her faves are Montale attar ( thanks Vijay :-) ) and Tea for Two.
