What notes smell like ____?

For a long time I've been working on perfume formulations for personal use only. They represent different symbols and are thus not meant to be "classical" perfume scents. (Think: CB I Hate Perfume, Demeter, Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab.)

Anyway, I'm curious as to which essential oils or readily available/easily identifiable fragrance oil blends smell like:

1. Metal
2. Dirt
3. Water/that "aquatic" smell
4. "Ozone"

Also, what is a good source for ambergris fragrance oil? Have any of you tested various ambergris blends and found a good retailer?

I don't know much about essential oils myself, but I suspect a lot of the notes you're looking for might be easier to find in synthetics than essential oils. For example, that aquatic smell often comes from a synthetic called calone.

1. Citronalva, Hypo-Lem, Lemongrass oil, Bergamot oil.
2. Dimethyl Ciclormol, Isi Butyl Quinoline, patchouli oil.
3. Floralozone, Myrac Aldehyde, Octacetal, fresh green apple.
4. Decyl-Methyl Ether; Helional, Cyclemone A.

hope that helped!
cheers

Readily available (in the health food section of a grocer) essential oil/oil blends that, mixed about, can mimic:
Metal - sage
Dirt- patchouli, cedar

A good note for dirt that isn't too hard to find is spikenard oil. That with a bit of patchouli could smell pretty earthy.
