recommendations based on current favorites?

I've always been averse to male fragrance. Previously I'd only ever owned some Stetson (circa 1985), and some Old Spice, both gifts from my grandmother. I never actually wore them because I thought they smelled too strongly.

Last year a friend of mine took to wearing YSL's M7, and I thought it smelled just delicious. It reminded me of cedar, frankincense and myrrh, mixed with the smell of burning charcoal, like you get in an Orthodox church. It completely changed my mind on male frags.

After reading on basenotes and ordering over a dozen samples my collection has grown to four scents that I'm very happy with:

M7
MPG's Santal Noble
Creed's GIT
Gucci Pour Homme

Of these my faves are GPH and the Santal Noble.

When I first smelled Santal Noble it sent me into a reverie of vivid recollections from childhood: marching out into the cold woods to cut down an eastern red cedar for Christmas, the smell of stacked fresh cut wood for the fireplace, my grandfather tending the wood stove, my mother's cedar chest with her wedding dress and all those old photos and letters. It was amazing, like a mind-altering drug! Some days I think it smells like a pencil, but most I'm loving it.

GPH again invokes the burning of frankincense & myrrh, with the pepper accord smelling more like gunpowder and burning charcoal to my nose, only more literally than the M7.

So, it would seem I like the woods and incense. Anyone care to recommend other frags based on my current picks?

Kyoto - CDG
Jaisalmer - CDG
Heritage - Guerlain
L'Air du Desert Marocain - Andy Tauer

By the way, you have good taste. Good Luck and welcome.

I just read in another thread that you thought Heritage was dated, so try L'air du Desert Marocain.
Heritage will grow on you though. Give it another shot at some point. Wear it all day and see.

I would suggest the following fragrances:

Montale's Greyland (similar cedar vibe from Gucci PH but more dynamic)
Creed's Bois Du Portgal (peppery, woodsy fragrance that is stunning)
Guerlain's L'instant (slightly powdery, woodsy semi-sweet oriental)
Lalique (a smooth as silk take on woods and spices).
Diptyque's Tam Dao (very mellow and pure take on sandalwood)

These are a start anyway..

hope they help

I'll second Heritage and Bois du Portugal. I am a big fan of M7 and GPH too and these are some of my other favorites. They smell similar, although BdP is superior. You even want to try GPH's half brother, Envy. He's quite the party animal. anyway, happy hunting.

I second Kyoto. It's my favorite wood/incense frag.

I recommend the entire Incense series from CdG except Avignon. Kyoto is my fave, but I'm giving Zagorsk another try after hearing a friend rave about it. I have a hunch you might like Zagorsk.

I second CdG 2 Man. A must test for fans of Gucci PH.

Thanks to everyone for the replies! There are some very interesting sounding frags in that list.

I went on a blitz last night at Sephora and Nordstrom and brought home eight samples. Tried the Terre d'Hermes today, and so far am not really into it.

Sephora was great. I've never set foot in one before, but all the SAs were enthusiastic and they eagerly decanted samples into these nice little atomizers with caps.

Nordstrom were helpful, but didn't seem real enthusiastic about decanting samples, though they did it for me.

Thanks folks!

I picked up a sample of Gucci Envy at Sephora last night; you're right, I like it.

My nose is not that sophisticated, so I apologize for any non-standard categorizations, but I get a note of green tea, or edamame. Grassy. If it's vetiver, it's really well balanced with something else that tones down that freshly-cut-lawn smell.

Thanks for the recommendation!

There are some really good recommendations so far. To them I'll add:

Divine L'Homme Sage
Amouage Dia
LesNez- Let Me Play The Lion
10 Corso Como

The first thing that came to mind was Zagorsk by CdG, which has already been mentioned, so I will second the Zagorsk recommendation.

I'm with Sloan--Zagorsk is really something you should find and try. It's my favorite of the CdG incense series now, surpassing Kyoto.

Jock is right also. You've got great taste.

Welcome to the board!
