What's the deal with Floris?

I am in Canada and am always looking for a cool new signature scent.

I just watched Casino Royale and became curious about the Floris line (also, the fragrance in the bag at the end of the movie looked very cool-stupid marketing).

I currently wear Rocabar, Bulgari Black, Chanel Pour Monsieur and Anteaus.

NearFantastica was kind enough to give me a good 30 vials of fragrances to try including various Creeds and I will post a review of those soon.

Anyway...does anyone wear any of the Floris frags? They look very luxurious on the website.

I read that James Bond "wears" Floris No. 89.

I have tried JF, and found it to be a decent citrus fragrance with a "sour" lemon element to it.

That bottle in Casino Royale was a Floris? What about Vesper's bottle that was in the desk in the hotel room near the end? Was that Floris too? Do you know which scent it was?

Anyway, I've smelled Sandalwood, JF, Elite and Cefiro.

JF just seems like a copy of GIT, and doesn't really add anything to that motif that hasn't already been added and re-added several times. Not a bad scent at all, but GIT is better, IMO.

I'm not terribly thrilled with Sandalwood, even though I love the note and generally like "pure" sandalwoods a lot. It's the only cologne I know of that actually smells stronger 3 hours after application than 1 minute after. When it finally makes its presence known, it has this weird, waxy, chemical sandalwood note that I just don't like. It isn't obnoxious or anything...that just isn't how I like my sandalwood.

And Elite is just disgusting. Musty, rotten, moldy, pungent and ugly are adjectives that come to mind.

Cefiro is pretty good. Kind of a fresh, spicy, soapy scent with notes of tea. Perhaps a fresher take on Bvlgari au the Vert. Longevity is lacking.

Having thoroughly bashed the house, I must now admit that I would really like to smell Limes and Santal. Both sound like high quality, interesting scents. If you are interested in British scents, I really like Geo F. Trumper. You might check them out.

No. 89 is very good mens fragrance, which I have in steady rotation in the Spring/Summer and would recommend it highly, and not for its connection to 007.

The men's cologne that has been marketed along with "Casino Royale" is "Boss Selection" by Hugo Boss. I find that it fits Daniel's Bond quite well, especially the picture of the poster that is on the cover of the DVD and the soundtrack CD. I have Boss Selection and I love it. The only problem is that it's not very long lasting. In terms of Floris, they have one fragrance that is both masculine and sweet like candy. I can't for the life of me remember which Floris scent it is, but I want it. About No. 89, I got a sample of it and I did not get a James Bond vibe, at all. It is nice enough but not one thing about it says "James Bond". If you are looking for the ultimate James Bond cologne, look no further than "Habit Rouge", the selection of Sean Connery. The best version of it is the original EDT, which is not to say that it's the original Habit Rouge. They came out with an EDT version which is amazing. Then, later, they came out with another EDT. I like that one too, but it's completely different.

As for Floris, Santal is excellent. Summer Limes is one of the better lime-based fragrances, using more of the lime-blossom to get a different feel that just lime. Cefiro can be found in edp strength (as well as Santal) and it is extremely long lasting (at least on me). No. 89 is an older, more traditional type fragrance with citrus and floral (rose) notes, but very well done. I think JF is a bit lighter than GIT--not a "heavy" feeling, with more citrus notes.

A rather sweet, woody fragrance with patchouli and a touch of black
peppercorns. I like it, and I think it's a rip-off of Gucci Envy, but
perhaps better.

I think the Floris line is pretty good, and the accompanying shower gels
were excellent, though I think now discontinued. Santal, and JF are the
two I own bottles of, but I would enjoy trying No. 89 and I am told
that their Vetiver is good. I think Cefiro is a nice grapefruity citrus, but
not particularly special. The EdP is better than the EdT, though.

Elite is an unusual fragrance, which some love, but others must surely
dislike. It's a "dirty" tuberose. Unorthodox, but interesting.
I think this house is worth investigating, and I wish their products
were easier to find.

Classy... I'm glad you are getting some use out of the decants. I've opened Pandora's Box..havn't I?

The only Floris I have tried is the Santal fragrance which has been mentioned above. I agree that there is a hint of Envy in the fragrance. It is a smooth, sweet woodsy fragrance..not as thick..and slightly more refined than Gucci's offering. I found it kind of dull and rather underwhelming.. but I would love to sample some other Floris fragrances as well...

Btw, Graffam is another local frag hound (also named Gary)..... we need to stick together.

SMN melograno is a classic that is extremely masculine and "utilitarian" smelling, soapy.

floris malmaison is also a classic but kind of feminine on its own, a clovey carnation. in it's original formulation it was the signature scent of oscar wilde.

I highly recommend layering these two.

Wait, so is there Floris in the movie or no? I remember two fragrances in Casino Royale. One in the desk in the hotel room about 20 minutes from the end and one in Bond's bag on the boat. Is one Floris and one SMN? I would look for myself, but I just took the movie back to Blockbuster. I suppose the bottles of the two brands look rather similiar.

I remember coming upon my 1st Floris sample and thinking the same thing...WTF, where has this line been all of my life. I had NEVER heard of them before.

I tried CEFIRO and I remember liking it - it had a 'Sweet Tarts' note in it that a few other BN mention in other scents. A kind of confectionary fruity sugar smell...but softly sweet, not overdone. And really fresh smelling...Sorry not a good description but I would recommend.

Floris Vetiver is one of the finest scents of its type. I find the tradtional line (Vetiver, No. 89, Special No.127 and Sandalwood) to be the company's best offerings, but I also quite like Elite and, to a lesser extent, Santal. For anyone who is a traditional wetshaver, their line of shave soaps are superb, though quite pricy.

I see the replies are divided on Santal, so I'll weigh in. I have had this one for a long time and I really like it for daytime wear. I find it a little light-weight for evening occasions. It's the only Floris I've ever smelled.

I'm surprised to see the lack of love for Santal. I have had more positive feedback when I wore that one than any other frag in the last few years, and I dig on it myself. It will be a fixture for me for a long time.

I've also got JF and Elite. I will have the JF in the summer rotation for sure. Elite, I am not so sure about. Sometimes I love it, sometimes I feel the need to wash it off.
