Madini Oils; Review--Great Sillage on a budget

Purplebird turned me on to Madini Olis. Some others will be adding their reviews as they receive the samples. Here are my impressions:

Azahar- The prominint orange flower note is fresh. It is pleasant but reminds me so much of suntan oil, I found it distracting. It seemed like a male oriented scent.

Chypre- A haunting scent...what does it remind me of? Finally I figured it out. A replica of Houbigant's 'Chantilly'. Very nicely done. Lemon, bergamot, & neroli top notes, mid notes; jasmine, rose, carnation, ylang ylang, misc. spices, base notes;Indian Sandalwood, moss, vanilla, musk, leather, tonka, & benzoin

Soulimane- A strong sandalwood accented with green notes (maybe bergamot?) it is definitely male with wood in the base. Just not my thing.

Maderas D'Orient- With Atlas Cedar and Moroccan Rose, I think there's carnation too and rare woods (listed but not identified), this is a gorgeous scent. Woody and spicey-floral with beautiful sillage and yummy drydown that makes me think of rich fruit and spices in a desert garden oasis.

Salma- Sweet and spicey,I'm not sure of the notes, I'm guessing ylang ylang, neroli, galbanum I know there is amber. It's a very charming citrusy amber.

Hanane- This has an accord that is very like a Caron, deep amber with a slightly powdery drydown. En Avigon, Normandie and Nuit Noire come to mind. It calms quickly and becomes a quite lady-like, deep, sexy floral. It's described by Madini as a balsamic with a galbaum base. It has rose, jasmine, clove, patchouli, tuberose, amber & musk.

Henna- Top notes are dry and lightly tobacco-like and I thought it was going to be like Gres 'Cabochard'. The dry-down changes and becomes more green and lightly floral. Vetiver, jasmine, rose, galbanum, bergamot kick in and it becomes an almost exact match for Guerlain's 'Chamade'. A charming fresh approach as it lacks the harshness of the aldehydes in the EDP. The oil is softer and yet rich and strong. Superior, in my opinion, and very appropriate for spring.

Mochalate Malaki- This has a fresh light leather quality reminiscent of 'Miss Jolie.'

Autumn- This reminds me of 'Angel'. I get white chocolate, patchouli, vanilla, bergamot, and it ends with a fizzy fruit that makes me think of dewberry...although I don't know why. Maybe I had a drink called that once. It's nice though kind of sweet.

Santal Blanc- Another masculine scent. It's somewhat linear, basically dry and woody sandalwood and something that reminds me of mesquite.

Alma Di Alma- A Strong green chypre like a Dioressence revival. It comes close to Miss Dior but deeper and with more patchouli. This was one of my favorites.

Olive Flowers- Now this is Miss Dior's roots as far as I can tell. According to the website, it is Madini's answer to 'Shalimar'. I think it is far greener and less vanillic. See what you think. If you like chypres, this is for you. Sharper than Alma Di Alma.

Sahara- This was my favorite male scent. I've never tried 'Eau Savage' but if it is anything like I imagine with massive vetiver and a sexy woody base, it must be close.

I had fun trying these and plan to try some more. There are 100 different oils to try. Google 'Madini' for a cheap thrill.

Thanks for posting this fabulous review. I've been really into perfume oils lately, too, and it's a whole new world! I have Alma di Alma and I love it. What a beautiful, elegant, long-lasting scent! I recommend DSH Essense Studio for other gorgeous, long-lasting oils, in case you're interested in trying more!

Great reviews, kumquat--I enjoyed reading them.
And I'm glad you liked the Madinis.
The bottles are cheezy little roll-ons, nothing for the collector, but the cost goes into the contents. You will rarely find anything that strong at that cost. At $25 for 6 ml, they last a long time for a little money.

Hananae was close to a Caron? Welly, well. No wonder it kept calling me back.
Olive Flowers had Miss Dior leanings? That explains my love for it.
And wasn't Maderas de Orient cool? Not sweet, but nevertheless yummy.
(I could go on and on, but I don't want to recapitulate your reviews.)

I just love the way your reference things to known scents. It is very helpful to explain to people who have never smelled them, and also to account for why I do or do not like a fragrance the first time I smell it.

Great reviews KUMQUAT! Between yours and PURPLEBIRD7's I find myself yearning for these scents. I've been keeping them on the backburner as I have so many other samples to test, but will probably not wait too long now as my curiosity is getting the better of me!

TOVAH - I just wanted to say I LOVE your Avatar. It's gorgeous!

I'm glad you liked my musings. I'm not very good sometimes at zeroing in on specific notes, but sometimes the memory of a scent is very strong. With these it was interesting how many of them were almost exactly like modern scents we know. This company is supposed to be a 14th generation Arabian family. I don't know how old that is but it makes one wonder if maybe our modern formulas weren't derived from ancient classic recipes. I'm sure they've also been tweaked and modernized along the way. But there must be a long history of things that just go together like 'milk & cookies'. And thanks for the suggestion of DSH Studio, Tovah. I'll look that up. I like these oils a lot.

Name the word "sillage" and I'm hooked! Just ordered Henna and Alma di Alma. They have so much to choose from; so it is very helpful to read reviews like this.

Do you have a link to their site? When I googled Madini Oils the only site I found listed the oils in 3ml & 6ml sizes....at a cost of $15 & $25. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place.

Thanks.

Bah. No UK supplier.

Sounds like you were in the right place - Talisman, right??!! - when PBird is saying $30, I think she's including postage. The sample program is worth a try!!

Thanks for responding, Taolady. But, PB said "$30 for 15 ml." I don't see a 15ml size anywhere. Just 3ml & 6ml. Thats why I'm confuzzeled.

They do sound wonderful. And I'd love to give them a try. But, $15 for 3ml & $25 for 6ml seems a little steep. I don't have any experience with perfume oils though, so maybe thats a fair price?

I just looked at your questions here. I will consult Purplebird. The website I found was the one with the 6ml size. I completely overlooked her saying it was '$30 for 15ml'. I will ask her about it.
My mistake.
Thank you, kumquat for calling.
It is 6 ml for $25. I will go correct my post.
Still, it figures out to about half of what you would pay for most pure parfums on a per-ounce basis.
There are 29.5 ml in an ounce,l so that makes it $123 per ounce.
Compare, for example, to $250 for Guerlain or Chanel.

These oils are stronger than usual, and all natural too.
Check this out. Says it better than I can.

A little does go a long way. Sorry they aren't super cheap as we thought at first. Still fun to try 5 samples for $10 with an order, I think. Otherwise it might be $5 more for shipping.

Thank you, kumquat, for putting a twinkle in our day. (I think I shall now refer to you and Purplebird as our Nebaska Noses.)

And, yes, the new avatar is exquisite, Tovah!

Would that make us Big Red Noses?

If you'd like to get in on the samples that are making the rounds, pm me and I'll add you to the list. I've got them in my hot little hands right now!!

The experience here so far: Chypre: Don't believe the name - on me this beauty is honeyed vanilla and white flowers with only a whisper of green. Very round and elegant, like the classic French ones. Sits close to the skin but has great sillage. Hanane dries down to Je Reviens on me!! Notes are galbanum, roses, jasmine, sandalwood, clove, patchouli and balsam. Beautifully composed, it's on my hit list right now. :bounce:

Just love these Mandinis!!!

Thanks for all the wonderful reviews and information, ladies! These oils sound fantastic. I'll definately have to give them a test drive.

And thanks so much for offering to add me to the sample list, Taolady. PM sent!

Hanane is Je Reviens? Cool! That's one I've only had in an inferior mini and had the feeling it was completely off.

I've tried most of their scents over the years and these are the ones I bought in relatively larger sizes (3ml and the no longer offered 4ml bottles) and didn't swap away: Musk Pierre, Autumn, Vanille, Ambre, Baraka and Musk Gazelle. Their lasting power is AMAZING!!. They're also fun to use for layering purposes - especially Vanille and Ambre.
I really must say that the customer service is excellent too. If you are having trouble deciding what try, do give them a call; they'll very patiently guide you toward what you might like. And, where else can you return a bottle of oil after trying it if you want to exchange it for another scent?
Santal Blanc, one of the two for today's wearing. You are probably too young to have experienced the sandalwood incense that pervaded the seventies - and it doesn't matter 'cause this isn't it!! That sandalwood had strong presence, this is - as Purplebird7 has said - light and dry. Like freshly sawed-hardwood but with no hint of pine or cedar. It's distinctive on me and very sportif!

Alma di Alma - a lovely, sophisticated vanilla musk with amber undertones. Citrus notes are listed and I might find a hint of orange but that's it.

I am thinking that, while these Madinis can stand on their own, these perfume oils make an excellent base for all kinds of layering. I haven't tried yet because I am living with them monogamously for now. Like Santal Blanc under Lonestar Memories. And Alma di Alma under Angel.

Just a thought.

--------------------------------------
Azahar - orange blossoms pure and simple. A poor man's Fleurs de Citronnier - "rich" man's rather!! Warm and round without acidity and - as always - great longevity!!

Sahara - billed as "citrus, myrrh and amber" I get ambery, vanillic citrus right away. Plus a bit of that "dirty" note I love. Perhaps it's the myrrh/citrus combo. A keeper!

--------------------------------------
Mokhalate Malaki - opened with a blast of saffron on me and over an hour or so bloomed into a delicate mellowed rose with a dusty undertone. Strange scent. Think I gotta give it time.

Olive Flowers - light frankincense with a hint of lemon. The amber note is not very pronounced on my bod and the drydown is pleasantly sweet and powdery. Leaves a nice wake!

--------------------------------------
Winding up my affair with the thirteen samples the wonderful PurpleBird7 is circulating with:

Salma - a fruited amber that is light and airy. Doesn't have the longevity of some of her sisters but pleasant withal. As I've said before - I think I'm going to be ordering lots of samples rather than investing in FB's - I love the variety and because "a little dab'll do ya" (you children are far too young to recognize that old ad slogan! :bounce I know they will satisfy my Madini craving for a long time!!

Souliman - the most complex of the Madinis so far. Opens on a spicy citrusy note and the morphs into an amber floral in which there are discernible notes of jasmine and vanilla. Superb!!

Madras de Orient - my bod often grabs for the base notes right off and that happens with this wonderful blend of "Moroccan Blossoms" and - patchouli? There's a slight hint of the woods and cedar in the dry down - I find this bright and appealing.

Sort of sorry this journey is over (for now) Tomorrow these babies are on their way to Clemmie - in "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Madinis!!" (Sounds like a circus act. )

I'm wearing Ambergris, today. Don't be fooled.. it's the smokiest, dead-sexiest amber you'll ever swoon over. Guys have followed me, on the street, to ask what I'm wearing.

I have quite a few of them. When I get a minute, I'll review. I've noticed that a few Madini blends have an uncredited civit note, that does NOT morph into something fecal (as civit often does, on my skin). The note is animalic, and just slightly "jarring." in the best possible way.
Boy, you're not kidding Anbreen.
When I got this, I did not know what labdanum smelled like. A perfumer told me that Madini Ambargris was raw labdanum, all dark and sticky. And she said it was a smoky variety.
So, "Ding, ding, ding!" You are absolutely right.
Anbreen gets the note identification prize for today.
(This is exactly why I'm doing the Note Identification Project. How could I have missed the fact that it is labdanum?)
Smoky, sexy, labdanum.
Supposedly, Madinis don't use real animalic ingredients, so you don't have to feel guilty about the civit-like notes.

..and Ambergris is showing as the Top Seller. No surprise, here~

IMVHO, Ambergris is the Holy Grail, or very close to it.

If you annointed yourself with amber, then put on a warm sweater, to sit next to a bonfire on a cool night, that's what Ambergris smells like. Just like wood smoke and embers over amber.

Kumquat, thank you for linking this thread in the SotD thread!

I bought a sampler pack of Madini musk fragrances, which I mentioned in a SotD thread. I think I may need to dilute them in some almond oil. So far, I like Alma di Alma very much. I still have a couple more to sample. I need to spend some time with them. I’m not used to this kind of potency – one teeny little swipe with the sampler wand and it was like…Kabam!! It takes hours for the scent to settle down on my skin and become a bit more friendly. They seem like very nice quality – just super potent, which takes some getting used to. Looks like I need to try Hanane, as I am a Je Reviens lover. I will come back with my own impressions later so I can at least add some value to the thread (hopefully).
