Hey, we haven't seen BrothaG, Riannon, or SenZ for a while. We miss you!

Hello all, and thanks Haunani I wish I had more time to play along recently but things have been quite hectic. I think I'll have the chance to do a new puzzle today though!

Here we go..

Fragrance name only please!
Hello and good afternoon, G Good to see you back.

Maybe best to identify the statue first? I think that is the statue of the Virgin Mary in the Straits of Messina.

First guess: Le Parfum: Virgin Number One by Thierry Mugler?

Missed you too, Haunani
Maybe it is helpful as a clue: the statue has an inscription on its plinth: Vos et ipsam civitatem benedicimus (We bless you and your city), a quotation from a letter which according to the legend Mary gave to the Christians of the city.

You are correct about the statue, Riannon Virgin Number One however is not the right answer.

Thanks for elaborating on the inscription, but you won't need it to find the right fragrance to match. The answer lies in the rest of the picture, although it is not 'correct' technically speaking. Slightly devious!
"In some circumstances (in the Strait of Messina) the mirage of Fata Morgana can be seen looking to Sicily from Calabria."

so....Mirage by Mandini?

Good to see both BrothaG and Riannon back on the Thread!

Happy to see you as well Ken!

I'm sorry, no to Mirage. Keep focusing on who the statue is and what surrounds her. It's quite simplistic

Unfortunately I'm not here tonight, so I can't answer to your guesses for a couple of hours.. will try to reply when I get back! Have fun.
Hi BrothaG and Riannon, and good morning Mr. K! Ooh, I wish I didn't have to run out the door to work. A puzzle sounds like so much more fun!

Hugs, H
Hello and good afternoon, Ken Good to see you!

So, our Brotha is only slightly devious......oh dear, it could become a long day

I fear it is something with 'water' or 'eau' (and if not he will tell us and we will know a lot more )

Let's try Acqua Santa / Holy Water by AbdesSalaam Attar Profumo

Edited to hug Haunani. Don't work too hard, dear!
Thread Starter
No, I swear it really is only slightly devious I'm afraid Acqua Santa/Holy Water isn't right, but that's a very good guess!

Your first guess however was even closer... When combined you've found two out of three 'puzzle elements' already

I hope you might be able to join us later, Haunani! Take care.

Virgin Island Water by Creed?
Hi all! I'm going to go out on a different limb. How about

Oropuro
by Laura Tonatto (2000)

The statue is gold, Mary is pure, and the setting is Italian.

???

Adding a second guess:

Water Of Notre Dame
by Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab

???

Fabulous guesses all, but kbe has nailed it with Virgin Island Water by Creed!

A statue of Virgin Mary of course, surrounded by water, and the devious part being that Messina is not actually an island Looks like an interesting place to visit either way.

Congratulations Ken and thanks to all who played along

Hmph Nice puzzle!!

Congratulations Ken, Master of solving devious puzzles
post #8897 of 10562
"First, I would like to thank the Academy.."

Without Bro's clues and comments about the near-misses by Riannon I would not have guessed it.

Really a good puzzle Bro. Thanks!
Hooray for Mr. K! And very clever puzzle, BrothaG. When I first saw K's Virgin Island Water guess, my eyes went right past it because I associate it with a different part of the world. Neat!

New Puzzle. Fragrance only.

Hmmm... what a sweet old-fashioned picture! Here are some wildly varying guesses (the last one is probably a real stretch):

Curve Wave for Men
by Liz Claiborne (2005)

Ciao
by Houbigant (1980)

American Classic
by Avon

The Morning After

You are on the right track with one of those..

(Nothing to do with the answer but..does that guy wear rouge or what??)

The rouge is what made me think of "the morning after".

So you aren't going to tell me which one is on the right track, are you?

Hmmm... going out on a limb here...

Oh, yay! I was thinking something like "see you later" and tried different languages. Fun one, Mr K! I'm off to work, but wishing I could be a homemaker today. It's foggy outside here! Have a great day!

New puzzle, fragrance name only:

I have no good idea but I'll give this a shot anyway:
Ice water by Silvestre.
Nothing about mooses, reindeers or rennes so far.
There is one Alaska by Axe though.
Or perhaps it is not Alaska but Siberia and that is a musk deer? Blue musk by O'Boticario or Musc bleu by Il Profumo or Wild country musk by Avon.
How about Purple Water by Asprey?
Hi DD! Hi kbe! You have identified one word in the fragrance name. The animal is an elk, by the way, but that is more or less irrelevant.
Great solve of kbe's puzzle, Haunani!

For your puzzle: maybe Cool Water Game by Davidoff? That elk is certainly game. Poor elk....*very* cold feet
post #8912 of 10562
Just to get if off my mind: Silences Purple by Jacomo ?

Riannon, how can you read my mind across so many miles?! You are right on with Cool Water Game!

Yes, that poor elk with cold feet, and in my scenario a hunter aiming at him.

Kbe, in my singlemindedness I didn't even notice the purple color. Brrrr... indeed. And DD, I liked your musk/musc idea.

Thanks all! Now I can head out knowing that my puzzle was solved. Have a great day!
ESP again, dear Haunani?

Thank you for the lovely puzzle. Let's hope that Cold-Feet-Elk was only 'shot' by the photographer.
Elk? I think not..I callit a delimma, as I was stuck on it's horns trying to find the answer!

Beautiful pic Haunani. Just beautiful. I could sense the silence and the crisp cold air. Nice too puzzle Haunani and another swooping solve by our resident Dragoness
post #8916 of 10562
Here's a quick one for a Friday night...in case there are others who spend it at home like me.

Perfume name only.
Hmmm... been thinking about this one. Looked up some info. In Assyrian mythology, a human-headed winged lion is called a lamassu, but there is no fragrance with that name. There is no fragrance in the directory with the word myth in it, though there is a new fragrance called Mythique by Parfums DelRae.

There appears to be a link between lamassu and sphinxes, cherubim, griffons, and something called a manticore.

For now, I will start the guessing with these two:

Fantastique
by D'Orsay (1958)

or maybe

Cherub
by Scentsational of Huntington
Sphinx (by various manufacturers)?
None of the answers above. Haunani, kbe is getting closer. Don't dwell too much on how many legs this beast has.

Hmmm... I think I have it now, after reading your clue again...

Enigma

Enigma it is!

Yay! Neat puzzle, Darkdreams! And I learned some things about mythological creatures.

No puzzle is a match for you! First I wanted to post this pic:

but thought it would be too even easier than the one I posted.
New puzzle. Let's see how fast someone gets this. Fragrance name only:

Just checking in..

Off-topic but somewhat relevant to the Enigma puzzle.

I must have clicked on a really nasty malware or virus site infected site when checking out a pic from Google Images in attempts to find out more about the Enigma puzzle while on my home computer last night. Something on that site immediately and completely disabled my Antivir Gmb Premium Anti-virus etc. program and won't allow it to reinstall. First hint I had a monster in my puter was when I tried to search the Fragrance Directory right after clicking on the Sphinx site to get more info for the game. I was unable to get info on any frags thereafter..just clicked on my choice and nothing happened repeatedly. Then I tried an Antivir scan which wouldn't work at all. I download another antivirus premium program from Cnet to try to get rid of the problem as my Antivir program wasn't working at all. After download the AVG program from Cnet said I needed to delete the Antivir program in my computer to avoid conflict. I did so but the AVG won't install either.,, blocked also. Looks like I will have to take my tower to a Computer professional Monday to hopefully have it debugged. Damn...first time ever in 10 years. I may be offline for a few days

What a mess! I hope you're up and running soon.
My God, kbe! I am so sorry your computer got so messed up because of me. I hope it's not too bad and you can get it back to normal quickly. sooooo sorry....
darkdreams, you had nothing to do with it! I should have scanned the site before I clicked on. Thanks for the good wishes folks

but...

Got it sorted out I think. Dumped all traces of Avira and AVG. Rebooted, reloaded Avira Antivir from net. All seems to be OK
post #8930 of 10562
Love this thread! But the latest looks like a tricky one by Haunani...esp the bit on prescription pills.

Good for you, Mr. K. Next step: get yourself a Mac.

Good to see you here, Diamondflame!. Hint on the puzzle: It's a one-word fragrance name.
OK...maybe 'No' for the first letters (New Orleans?) and 'ade' (aid) for the last letters? Nomade by D'Orsay starts and ends that way but doesn't fit the other pics. Hmmm
post #8933 of 10562
I don't even know where to start on this one. What is the basorelief? Pythia? Looks like something you'd see at a fair. But I've never been to one.
Whew! You both unknowingly came very very close.
No more guesses? Time for another clue?

All the pictures are supposed to lead to one word, which is the name of the fragrance.
Good morning to your evening Haunani

I will give it a try: Relief by Forvil?

Pictures show relief from being endangered by water, a stone relief, medication as a relief and food (?) distributed as relief.

Or maybe they are showing something completely different

Ken, is you computer completely safe again?

That sounds like the answer Riannon!

My computer seems back in form, although searching for a fragrance in the Fragrance Directory is excruciatingly slow..nothing else on Basenotes takes so much time to load. Odd..
I could not sleep last night and I was thinking about this game. All I could come up in my semi-sleep state, was something related to faith. So maybe Destiny by Marilyn Miglin although I don't think Haunani would be so pessimistic. hmm...
P.S. kbe, I am glad your computer is better now.
The more I think about it, the more I believe Riannon got it. Come on Ms. H. tell us!
Sorry, guys. I slept in today (no work this morning!) and then Basenotes was down.

Yes, Riannon, it is Relief by Forvil! As you describe, all four pictures depict that word, in one way or another.

K and DD, you came so close with your "aid" and "basrelief" comments!

Great job!
