So Papi, you're asking which on the list are the best?

That's right, my list contains 101 fragrances! I need to sort out the top 10, otherwise, I'd be overwhelm to smell more than that at the end of the day.
MAN! That was a long list!! My votes are for Rochas Lui, Envy, Heritage and Black Code. I didn't see Rochas Man in there, maybe I missed it, but you might like it as well. Oh yeah and try Guerlain L'Instant if you haven't yet.
Okay Papi, try these ten:

Phileas Nina Ricci
Daim Blond Serge Lutens Les Salons du Palais Royal Shiseido
Racer Pacoma
Unless Men Panouge
Joint Roccobarocco
Van Cleef & Arpels Pour Homme Van Cleef & Arpels
Les Copains L'Homme Les Copains
Pomegranate Noir Jo Malone
Soprani Active Man Luciano Soprani
Lanvin for Men Lanvin

Papi, just curious, how did you come up with the list of 101?

Best regards,
Mike
Honestly, I haven't heard of about half of those...

but here my tops out of the ones that I've smelled (roughly in order):

Cuiron
Dior Homme
L'Air du Desert Marocain
Terre d'Hermes
Voleur de Roses
Envy
Original Vetiver
Allure
Heritage
Rose 31
Black Aoud
To my mind, of those you list, the top ten would be:

Balenciaga pour Homme (becoming very hard to find)
Nino Cerruti
Égoîste
Dior Homme
Eau Sauvage
Shaal Nur
Gucci Nobile (becoming harder to find)
Terrre d'Hermès
Montale Black Aoud
Romeo Gigli Sud Est (getting harder to find)
Lutens Daim Blond

You mention a few from some houses that I know, but my favorites from them are not the ones you list:

From Etro, I would say try Le Nomade;
From Les Copains, you might like Trend Lui.

For back-up from the ones you list:

Puig Sybaris
Monsieur Rochas
YSL M7

Are you the only two members that participate on this forum that know about fragrances? After seeing how many people have actually visit this thread, I expected more suggestions, but unfortunately not everyone has the courtesy to help out.

The only fragrance on your list of 100+ that I've smelled is Tauer's L'Air du Desert Marocain.

FWIW, it's rapidly becoming one of my favorites. a nice, dry, spicy amber scent.

Its not for lack of want in wishing to assist you with your query, Papi_Chulo, but for many here who are passionate about scent, its an exhausive challenge to step into someone else's shoes and tell them of 101 scents, which 10 to sample.

So, 50 people give you their personal opinions.... then what?
You scan each and every list and find those suggestions common to all of them to sample, or, on the day when faced with 100+ scents instore, will you pick up a fancy bottle with attractive packaging and give it a squirt?

The trouble is, opinions are like a**holes... eveybody has one. I cant wait to see the list you compile from these varied and delightful suggestions from fellow basenoters!

On that note, here are my suggestions. Good luck!

Platinum Egoiste Chanel
Dior Homme Christian Dior
Lanvin for Men Lanvin
Terre D'Hermes Hermes
Pomegranate Noir Jo Malone
Rive Gauche Pour Homme YSL
Lui Rochas Rochas
Black Aoud Pierre Montale
Zegna Ermenegildo Zegna
L'Ombre Dans L'Eau Diptyque

For testing so much scents you need time and you have to wear it on your skin...do you know every smell of these scents? My nose couldn´t do that...I know many many scents, but this took time...a lot of time...do you want more summer or winter...

It's just that that's a damn long list you have there. I did what I could, but that was still after a relatively brief scan of the list. If you could narrow it down to about half of what it is, you would get more and better responses.
Papi, I'm still curious as to how you came up with your initial list of 101 prospects. Also, some of the comments above are valid. Just because I like ten scents doesn't mean you're gonna like them. And there are many scents on your list that might be great that I have not yet experienced. Your request was almost like handing someone a local phone book and asking them to tell you who the ten nicest people in the phone book are.

How did you come up with your list? Have you done any research of your own on this project? If so please tell us about that. It may help some of us with our own screening methods. Have you taken advantage of our own Basenotes Directory in your quest? If so what did you learn?

Please let us know these things, Papi...we are all in this together. Thanks...

  • Caron Pour Un Homme Caron
  • Allure Homme Chanel
  • Egoiste / L'Egoiste Chanel
  • Dior Homme Christian Dior
  • Eau Sauvage Christian Dior
  • Envy for men Gucci
  • Terre D'Hermes Hermes
  • Lanvin for Men Lanvin
  • M7 YSL
  • Rive Gauche Pour Homme YSL

There's 10 that I think are very likable and worth sniffing, although a lot of these are widely available. You shouldn't need to go to a special perfume shop to find this stuff. I too am curious as to how you populated this list. There were quite a few things in you list that I have never heard of and also quite a few off-the-wall items (e.g. the lone Dyptique and L'Artisan scents).
Sorry could only get it to 14. Some of these ones you will not get a good idea of just with a quick sniff, they need more time and patience. I have marked them with a * for special consideration, not because they are the best, just because they may initially not be likable.

*Caron Pour Un Homme Caron
Vetiver Dry Carven
Egoiste / L'Egoiste Chanel
Dior Homme Christian Dior
Original Vetiver Creed
Envy for men Gucci
Heritage Guerlain
*Cuiron Pour Homme Helmut Lang
Terre D'Hermes Hermes
*Voleur de Roses L'Artisan Parfumeur
*Daim Blond Serge Lutens Les Salons du Palais Royal Shiseido
*Van Cleef & Arpels Pour Homme Van Cleef & Arpels
*M7 YSL
Rive Gauche Pour Homme YSL

With a list this long it's too confusing. The first thing to do is RULE OUT all the stuff you can find at any department store even though some are worth trying. You can always try those later. Looks like you have an opportunity to try some unique fragrances . So take advantage of it.

THE TRY LATER LIST:
YSL -ANY
TERRE D'HERMES
BOSS SPIRIT HUGO BOSS
KENNETH COLE - ANY
JO MALONE
LANVIN
LOLITA LEMPICKA
PACO RABANNE - ANY
CHRISTIAN DIOR - ANY
ARMANI - ANY
BALENCIAGA - ANY
GUCCI - ANY

MY TOP 9 TO TRY : SORRY I COULDN''T EVEN FIND 10 THAT I COULD HONESTLY
RECOMMEND..

ROSE 31 - ONLY PLACE TO GET IS THEIR WEBSITE/ DECANTS HARD TO FIND
EGOISTE/ONLY AVAILABLE AT THEIR BOUTIQUES
CARON POUR HOMME/ NOT USUALLY FOUND IN DEPARTMENT STORES
L'AIR DESERT MOROCAIN/ BECAUSE EVERYONE SHOULD EXPERIENCE A TAUER
BLACK OUD MONTALE/ GREAT FRAG,
VOLEUR DE ROSES/ THINK YOU DON'T LIKE ROSES/ TRY THIS ONE & ROSE 31
CHEVALIER D'ORSAY/ TRY LE DANDY IF THEY HAVE IT. FANTASTIC
SKYE GEO F TRUMPER/ HARD TO FIND
DAIM BLOND/ JUST BECAUSE
This thing is, at least a few on your list will not be easily found, no matter where you go. Cuiron (iirc) is discontinued, so as much as I like it, you won't likely find it at retail. A number of others will be found at boutiques only which would require boutique hopping. If you've got a day in New York, that's an option...

I don't know if anyone's suggested you search the web and request samples. A number of houses will provide samples - Trumper's, Ormonde, and Malle have each sent samples to me personally. I think Chanel would do likewise, especially if you don't have a boutique in your city. Others would likely do the same for the asking.

For a time I reviewed a perfume genealogy chart, which separated scents into their respective classes and leanings. It sounded like a great idea but turned out to have its shortcomings. Kind of like learning how to fish from a textbook. But, if you know that there is a scent you detest, you might be able to rule out the ones related to it.

Indeed, I done my own research, otherwise the list would have been even longer. I spent many hours on the Internet reviewing many fragrances and based on other people likes and dislikes I came with the list that I posted above.

There is an exclusive Perfume House here in my state that only sells fragrances and nothing else. I never seen such a store like it, I usually go there once a year, and bring myself lots of samples (given free) before I buy. Of course, I can't try all 101 fragrances and that's why I posted this thread on this forum.

I know that all of us don't like the same scents, but I am sure out of 101, at least 10 or so we might have in common.

Thank you all for all of your great suggestions!

Today, I had an opportunity to smell the following fragrances from the short version that I came up thanks to all of you who helped me reduce my list.

  1. Caron Pour Un Homme
  2. Cerruti Pour Homme
  3. Original Vetiver
  4. L'Ombre Dans L'Eau
  5. Chevalier
  6. Zegna
  7. Etra
  8. Shaal Nur
  9. Skye
  10. Heritage
  11. Cuiron Pour Homme
  12. Terre D'Hermes
  13. Daim Blond
  14. Himalaya (not on my list, but did tried it)
As all of you can see, I only tested half of the 28 that I intented to test. Why did I only test this many? Well, it wasn't because the young gal that helped me wasn't willing to do it, but instead I was overwhelmed. After smelling those 14 fragrances, I started to have the symptoms of allergies and decided that I'd come back to test the remaing 14.

Having said that, I was not very impressed many of the fragrances above. Many of them were to green, freshy, e.g. Caron Pour Un Homme and Original Vetiver by Creed.

On the other hand, these other two fragrances had some of a woody, oriental scent, Terre D'Hermes and Daim Blond, and of the two, I'd purchase Daim Blond, it had a sweeter taste.

Last but not least, I decided to take home some free samples that I liked the most out of the 14: Rochas Man (actually not on that list, but I liked the fruity smell), Arpege Pour Homme, Marc Jacobs (not on my list and after try the sample, I am becoming more disappointed), Etra by Etro, this one I liked very much, it also had that kind of sweet taste.

What I learned from this experience is that even though I did a lot of search to compile my list of 101 fragrances, I ended discovering that the fragrances that other people absolutely like or love doesn't mean that I'll crazy for those same fragrances.
