Question: V-necks? Thumbs-up, thumbs-down?

Generally, i'm very big on collars. Collared shirts, collared vests, collared coats and jackets. But ... a man can grow. And this has possibilities.



PS: Except the sport there looks like he'd want to accessorize with a spiked bulldog collar, which i wouldn't do.

PPS: Also, he's not wearing a proper belt!

Meh.

I've seen a lot of men wear v-necks, and it often looks "off" somehow; they look self-conscious. Also, the v-neck visually breaks the line across the shoulders, snipping out a wedge and making the shoulders look narrower, which most men prefer to avoid.
But try it. If you look at your reflection and love it, well, it works for you.

If you find yourself trying to work out its relative merits and drawbacks intellectually, take it off.

The fact that i don't own a single V-neck says something, heh. Oh, wait, i do have one sweater-type thing (i mop up spills with it after having worn it but once). One day, fifteen minutes before i had to be at a restaurant, i discovered that my pen had leaked all over my shirt pocket. Oh noooooo ....

So i popped into the nearest clothing-for-the-masses place ... think it was a GAP (haha), and grabbed the first thing that would match the suit. All in all, didn't work out too badly and i wasn't asked to leave the premises. The gimlet was excellent! But i digress.

Actually, it's the coat i like. But while thinking that i could make that coat look good if it was me who was wearing it (haha), i realized that the V-neck there was not entirely inappropriate. But only if the neck and waist area was properly offset. That runway needs accessories. Chains! No, not a grill!

It depends...you have to see what works for you and if you like it. I know some people who have long necks and they like turtlenecks....I do not see anything wrong with the look...it's more of a personal thing I guess...I only really wear v-neck tees....for me it's about comfort...I never really liked the idea of clothes covering up my entire body...I do not feel relaxed that way....and I wear them in the hot summers to keep cool.

BTW, what collection is that from?

Yeah..I thought the same too...at first...and starting doing a check but couldn't find the collection...but I guess I was on the right track...probably from an older Alexander Mcqueen spring collection? Also, it kinda looks very Valentino for some reason.

Don't get me wrong, i'm not knocking v-necks. I like to be comfortable too. In summer, i run about barefoot! Will always be an urchin that way.

But in relation to "how i like things" on myself, i'd have to pay extra special care to other pieces of wardrobe to wear 'em properly (meaning, comfortable with the presentation). The lack of a collar is what does it, really. Even in that photo above, that particular one looks a little too "casual" and too "thin" to wear straight under that "pre-posessing" coat with those trousers and shoes. It's too much of a mix of casual/semi/formal and doesn't appear balanced. A belt and something about the neck would fix that. More texture. Lean the whole thing one way or another, it's too undefined.

Here's what i call a "v-neck" (it's not, but you can think of it that way, it's another McQ):

I like that one. I think the cut is brilliant and the fit really excellent on the whole thing.

Oh, you can find Alexander McQueen and others with archives on the British GQ site here, i've already got it bookmarked for you. The initial photo is the 2005-06 Fall/Winter. Very easy to browse designers and collections. McQueen definitely has some very good things throughout.

V-neck T-shirts are fine and dandy and can be very flattering (they broaden the shoulders) - I wear them all the time. But under a suit jacket? Nah.

I already know some men who find the v-neck too foppish or twinky and won't wear it. But for men who are comfortable wearing it, I think it can be very alluring. It says "I'm confident" and showing a bit of chest never hurt. However, I agree the v-neck t-shirt makes for a very casual look. In your initial photo, had that been worn with a different shirt it would have completely changed the tone of the look.

Okay, i can see that. The other problem is my chest isn't bald, so a collarless v-neck is difficult. Neither am i interested in showing the metal hanging around it in such a carefree manner. That's posing.

Besides, confidence can be shown in other ways. Such as wearing that coat WITHOUT anything under it at all.

Sort of. It's from Coupling, oh the hilarity! But there definitely appears to be a tendency for stockings and thongs to make their appearance less and less as time progresses.

At first, there are all those excellent excellent thongs. You know, the kind where you can swallow three pairs in one go with a sip of water. But then the underpants ... expand and grow. And pretty soon, you're looking at the makings of a decent-sized trampoline!

I like V-necks, i have a whole bunch of them, about the same number as regular round necks and also some other types, but i have never really gave too much thought into the whys or the whens or anything like that.

What i don't like and don't find it elegant at all is the new wave of plunging V-necks for men.
Those, i would never wear.

I think that the black v-neck on the first picture would look good on a regular sized man, and not so much on a very thin male model like the one sporting it.!
