Guerlain Vetiver Extreme

Thread Starter
I recently read in a newspaper, that Guerlain will launch an extreme version of Vetiver this fall. I'm very excited about this because I always found the new version to be too light and ephemeral. Perhaps it will be a reincarnation of the old formula, let's hope so!

It's already out at Sephora. It has a strong vetiver note that isn't sharp, hardly any citrus. I actually really like it. It isn't the old formula though.

I am wearing Guerlain Vetiver Extreme today. I got it at Sephora about a month ago.
It is less hesperidic in the top notes than the regular version. It adds artemesia, olibanum, tarragon, and a good bit of cedar in the drydown. It is more woody definitely and slightly oriental in the drydown. I really love it because I had problems with the tobacco in the drydown of the regular version. Extreme doesn't use tobacco to my nose.

I tested it once or twice and liked it, but not well enough to buy when I already have the original. It seemed possibly a bit stronger---believe it or not---but I didn't notice any overt differences in the composition, which of course isn't to say there aren't any.

I love the regular version and this sounds like it's for me too. But alas it's not available in Canada. Is it a limited version soon to disappear, or will I find it at a fat discount on ebay in a few months?
I feel VE is a great new take on Vetiver by Guerlain!

With all the complaints of vetiver being too subdued in most modern vetivers, here's one with the vetiver taking center stage, right out front.

won't Sephora online ship to Canada? they're charging 74 US dollars for the 3.4oz/100ml bottle which isn't cheap comapred to Frozen Vetiver by Guerlain which I got at perfumebay.com The Frozen is quite unique. The name fits.
--------------------------------------
I haven't seen it on ebay. I will put a search for it.
But the frozen version has the same annoying tobacco note for some people (including me)...
I have the Frozen and I don't notice the tobacco note at all
post #12 of 29
there is no tobacco in Vetiver Eau Glacée (2004) as descibed in our directory

it has,

Top Notes
Lime, Orange, Bergamot,

Middle Notes
Neroli, Pepper, Nutmeg,

Base Notes
Tonka, Vetiver,

I think it's an unappreciated stepbrother of the bigger bottled Vetiver, the Frozen seems to only come in 2.5oz bottles but of the vetivers I've worn it's one of the best.
Well, I can't detect a strong difference between them. The only thing I noticed is that Eau glacee has a more proeminent and persistent lemon note.
Anyone knows who is the perfumer of Vetiver Extreme? I mean, could it really be Jean Paul Guerlain himself? I try to avoid all those new girls at Guerlain making new fragrances...
Didn't he retire? I figure if anyone knows it'd be you!

I'm really frustrated this isn't available in Canada. Each time I saw it on ebay, it went really really cheap lile $20-25 for 4 oz - and either they wouldn't ship to Canada or I missed it.
Thanks for your confidence in me! But no, I've searched everywhere, and no information about it is to be found. I guess it's one of the girls. My better half is in US and might bring it back for me - though I'd like to sniff it myself first. I so love my Vetivers (both vintage and new) and am afraid to be disappointed. It's a bit pity if it's too oriental in its base I think...

I bought Vetiver Extreme tonight. I've sniffed it too many times while passing counters, so this time it came home with me.

More thoughts later, but for a quick thought I think this version belongs more to the very contemporary vetivers recently released. Like Creed Original Vetiver, Lanvin Vetyver, Mugler Cologne, and another that escapes my memory right now. It's better than those by a long distance if you ask me, but it belongs to the soapy clean woody genre rather than the dirty wet forest genre. I might wear it tomorrow, but I might wear the new release of Givenchy Vetyver tomorrow. Bought that baby too.

You took the words out of my mouth...clean vetiver. I actually prefer the Creed Original Vetiver better (strange...I used to hate Creed when I joined Basenotes, and here I am recommending them over a Guerlain...!), it's a tad brighter and less soapy.

I'll pass. I tend to prefer my vetivers with a little underbrush in them.

I hate to rain on the parade, and I wanted to like the new Vetiver Extreme.
But, while it is pleasant, it has poor longevity on me, and is just bland compared to
regular old Guerlain Vetiver. With "extreme" in the name, I had hope for a vetiver
powerhouse. Well, GV is the powerhouse, Extreme is not.

I predict that this one will not be around for long.
Regardless of how good or bad it is, the word "extreme" should be strictly regulated and removed from all fragrance titles as well as the names of most products. ALso the words "synergy, form factor, vectors..."
I want to modify my previous comments here a bit.

I sampled Vetiver Extreme again tonight. I find it better than I first thought.
Yep, it's less bold than good ole' GV, but the lack of heavy citrus and tobacco
can be seen as a benefit. This scent seems more about the vetiver and leans on
the woody side of vetiver's smell. The longevity could be improved, but those wanting
a vetiver-centric scent without the citrus and tobacco accord should give this a try.

It's not "extreme" in any realistic sense of the word, but it is pleasant.

One of the things I like about the original Vetiver is the very obvious nutmeg-note. One day I went into my kitchen and sniffed some real nutmeg and bang! it was just Vetiver! I see nutmeg listed in Vetiver Extreme, and it'd be nice to know if it's still a big part of the fragrance?

I didn't notice it, if it is. At least it didn't take on a big role in the play.
I think it is in the accord, but not prominent.

Just got hold of a Vetiver Extrême from Sephora in NY. Strange scent! VERY pronounced tarragon! I feel like being soaked in bearnaise sauce all day while wearing it! Definitely a flanker but not bad for everyday wearing...
What does "flanker" mean?

I've been really interested to try this one as I love the original so much.
I want to try this newest offering, but really think I'll pass on buying a bottle right now. I already have Route du Vétiver for those times when I feel like an earthy vetiver, and Barbier des Iles for those occasions that call for a clean, crisp vetiver. I still have a small decant of Vétiver Extraordinaire, too, but won't be replenishing it when it's gone (esp. at Malle's prices!), as two vetiver-based frags in my wardrobe is quite enough. Will probably sample Vetiver Extreme next time I go to Sephora.

Yes, sample this Matt. I didn't like it at all.

'Flanker' is slang I guess for a fragrance that is not a new invention but merely a by-product of other creations.

It's really not bad, it's less citrusy than the 2000-edition of Vetiver and still got the bitter nutmeg and vetiver notes. But it's still quite dominated by a more aromatic herbal note (the tarragon) that you have to like to love it.

I tried it again today. Every time I try it I like it better.
It's not a citrus-dominated vetiver, like the opening of original
GV is. It's more about the vetiver grass and maybe some sweet and woody
notes. Nice. If only it was available discounted, online.
