I collect antiques & collectibles.
Owned an antique shop in Canada at one time.
I've been hooked ever since.
I mainly love to collect porcelain, pottery and glass, but also furniture, pictures, jewellery, etc etc etc etc.... oh .... and dust!!
Chintz, depression glass, Moorcroft, H & K, FlowBlue, cobalt blue glass, teapots.... God I hope I haven't forgotten something!
Used to collect Military medals. Now it is stereo gear from the 70's, wine, just started with automatic watches. Collecting fragrances is new for me too.

Yes, all collectables, good ones, will need dusting if not scouring. And now folks list whether they lived with their collectables in homes where smokers may have been.

Rollercoasters. Not literally, but my hobby is riding them. I should break the 300 barrier this year (300 different coasters - not how many times I ride 'em).

Well, I have a collection of Converse Chuck Taylors, but all the pairs I have I actually wear. At last count, I had 23 pairs. If I had kept all the pairs that I've sold or given away, I'd probably have around 60.

I collect original art...paintings, sculpture...mostly abstract...a few figurative sculptures.
I also collect decorative orbs (round objects) of all sizes and material (wood, bronze, metal...) Orbs are also a theme in many of the paintings that I collect.

My wife collects antique chain-mail handbags.

We also collect etchings by the Swedish architect/engraver Axel Herman Haig.

I collect silver candlesticks, vintage Fiesta ware dishes, vintage Jadeite dishes. I also use all of the things I collect because I hate to see anything just sitting around and not being useful!

I'm also hoping that our associations here may lead to new discoveries or other hidden pleasures.

I'm looking for a pirates dagger and it can be a facsimile but it must be exquisitely crafted.

I started collecting baseball cards as a kid and was brought smack upside of reality when Mom decided schoolwork was more importatant than my collection... incinerators bore my wrath for years after..

Records I always lent away or lost but I remember buying them by the thousands. I lost all my great 60's, 70's LPs in Hurricane Floyd in 99'

You know what I always thought was the stupidest freakin' thing to collect?

Those little spoons from tourist destinations!

I hate those! Like if I went on a date to a girl's house, and she had one of those wooden display cases with dozens of little spoons, I'd be laughing to myself as I bolted for the door!

------------

I've got half a dozen pairs of Asics Onitsuka Tiger tennis shoes.

I've got a hell of a music collection (though not quite as big as Rentboy's)

And half a dozen plaid Kangol hats

Right now though, cologne is still my big money hole.

Perfume is my most expensive hobby that I have so far. My goal is to own all the Serge Lutens that I want, which will probably end out to be half his line.

I also collect airline miles... living in rural Alaska, that's pretty easy to do. I also love music, but I only have about 18 gigs of music. Not too much compared to some of my friends. and all my stuff is LEGAL.

And I collect beauty products, especially face exfoliators and MAC lipglass/lustreglass. I am just getting into lipstick and I got 5 tubes of MAC lipstick. Mmmmm....

My favorite exfoliating kits so far are DDF Glycolic, Philosophy Microdelivery Peel, bliss Steep Clean, my Clairsonic brush, Clinique turnaround, and Murad exfoliating gel. My name is Rosie, and I'm an over-exfoliator. I also love NV Perricone face moisturizers and acne gel-cream. It wouldn't be so bad, except that the acne stuff is $55 a tube and the moisturizers are about $90. *sigh* I need a rich sugar daddy.

Things I would like to collect: Clothes (Chloe), shoes, backpacking gear, motorcycles (Ducati), houses, antique furniture, jewelry, art.

I also collect mineral samples, mostly a variety of quartz, and books. While basenotes was down I started collecting dust.
I collect dust too, but that's because I'm lazy. When I come home tired from work and the gym, the last thing I want to do is the dusting...
hmm......

my wife thinks i collect guitars, though i only have a few (like 6 ready to play, 2 that need a little work, 2 that are just in pieces, 2 basses, 1 on layaway).

used to collect LPs. sold off about 1/2 - 2/3 though, so now only a a few hundred pounds of vinyl.

enough vacuum tubes to qualify as a collection by some standards. used to have lots of audio components that used them too. marriage changes so many things...

and a little collection of medical art books, though not of the antiquarian variety, all fairly recent and mostly in print.

Apart from the books and music, majolica, William Morris fabric and Victorian Scottish pebble jewelry.

Yo-yo's.. Yes, the toy - and not necessarily vintage ones but modern versions. Ones made of titanium and quality aluminum alloys on a CNC lathe that spin for 15+ minutes on a single throw.. Seems there's a new "boutique" "niche" yo-yo coming out every other day and they all cost $100+, typically sell out in a day or two, and skyrocket in value within weeks! I'm actually considering selling off some of my yo-yo's to fund my fragrance obsession!

Prior to yo-yo's and fragrances I was into collecting music (particularly the 4AD record label) Salamanders & Newts (I even had several species of salamanders hibernating in my fridge!) and all sorts of random other stuff..

My girlfriend says I've got problems.. I'm beginning to agree with her..

I collect anything Coca Cola. My whole kitchen is done up with Coca Cola signs and I have glasses & dishes. I have Coca Cola pillows, towels, rugs, and clothes.

Here's the story behind my love of Coca Cola, just incase you were bored silly and had nothing else to do lol.

Well, when I was a little girl we would go visit my maternal grandparents in NC. Back in those days the south was still segregated in most parts. My Grandma was mixed with black/white/native american and my Grand-Daddy was black. My Grandma was a tough old bird. Not many people would tangle with her. She got away with most things partly because of her skin tone (very light), but she was still considered to be black. Anyhoo, at that time blacks were not allowed to purchase Coca Cola. They were only allowed to buy Pepsi and other sodas. I don't know why that was, but that's what my Moms told me later after my Grand-Daddy passed away. I don't know who gave my Grand-Daddy his first taste of Coca Cola, but that became his favorite soda. He couldn't buy it, but they would let my Grandma buy it. He kept it under his bed. He had other sodas like grape and Sundrop, but Coca Cola was his favorite. He would drink a Coke at dinner time. Sometimes when we visited them there would be a house full of my other cousins. Everybody ate at the table, but my Grand-Daddy ate at the counter. I would always sit in my Grand-Daddy's lap and eat right out of his plate. We would eat together and drink Coca Cola. My other cousins had to drink lemonade or Sundrop, but I was the only one that got to drink Coca Cola with my Grand-Daddy. I am a serious Daddy's Girl. So, it was no surprise that I would be a Grand-Daddy's girl. So, that's why I love Coca Cola to this day.
You know he loved cologne too. He loved to smell good. My Moms would always get him colgne for a gift. You could smell him a mile away lol!! My Moms would get on him about putting on too much. He would tell her that Grandma wanted to come and smell him. My Grandma would tell him he was too old to do anything, what she wanna smell him for lol!! I miss them.

What a great story Divatologist & what a great reason for a collection; a lovely memory!

Do you have any vintage Coke trays? I've got an original one from 1939 it's the Coca-Cola Spring Board Girl. She's awesome!

I have a couple of trays, but I don't know how old they are though. I actually got a lot of things not too long ago. My cousin was working for a resturant who was switching from Coke products to Pepsi. So, they had to pull down all the coke things that they had. I had a ball. I have huge coke bottles and retro signs and trays. I'll have to take a pic of my kitchen when I get home and post it.

This is one porcelain pattern I collect.
If you have any or know someone who has any ... I want it!
Well I have about 30 double edge razors, all of which I have either used or will use. Not sure that qualifies as a collection. Some are early 1900's; others from the 60's & 70's. I'm a member of Badger and Blade, the wet-shaving site, and got to BN because a number of B&B members mentioned it.

I enjoyed reading this thread; made me feel that my hobby isn't too weird.

When I was little, I collected old change and polished it up using a salt and vinegar solution (I saw this done in 1st grade and was hooked). I would sift through my parents' loose change that was always laying around and pick out the coins that I thought were REALLY old. That meant anything from before about 1950. Then I decided to liquidate my valuable collection to help fund a go-kart.

Lets see...then I started collecting cool looking rocks and shells and bits of eroded glass that I would find in the creek behind my house and at the lake. These were valuable assets, you see.

In high school I didn't collect anything (except maybe music) because I was at school from dawn 'til dusk pretty much every day with extracurriculars and didn't have time to devote to collecting anything...except high grades and a great looking college app.

When I got to college I had so much time on my hands that I didn't know what to do with myself, so I started collecting fragrances, and that's been it ever since.

Man it's so funny that I notice this thread now - I was just thinking today - "Man, the people on basenotes are obviously a bunch of crazy quasi-OCD maniacs like me - I bet they all have insane collections of other things at home" and I was thinking of starting a thread on it, but I guess you all beat me to it!

Some great stuff and funny answers. I like the one about collecting dust...

I collect strange action figures. If I get some money I'll probably collect a few ancient roman coins of my favourite characters.

Japan in particular makes some great ones.

Orchid Dude

Misfits

Blacklight Microman

"King Walder II" (Only in Japan can a nasty bad guy be called "King Walder II"

Sid Vicious

did I mention the guitars we collected my son and I? He took lessons, I paid for them and collected guitars and basses. I played bass at one time. I sold a cherry first year issue Music man blonde bass for what I bought it for and picked up a wine red Les Paul Custom for the boy. More later

I used to be a DJ (many years ago...). I haven't counted how much vinyl I have (rough estimate probably 1,200), but the cd's I burned into Itunes so I know that I have around 18,000 songs.

Thank you for sharing that memory with us.

There is a book called The Real Pepsi Challenge that you might be interested in reading. Essentially, Pepsi decided to court the African-American market because Coca-Cola was ignoring it. More than that, Pepsi had an integrated work force and management opportunities for African-Americans at a time when most companies would have said that couldn't be done. What is interesting to me is that doing the right thing is quite often the thing that makes the most business sense, too.

Some people are compelled to collect, just as some people have an addictive personality. I have collected fragrance, bible translations, linux distributions, pens, and probably some other things if I think about it. I seem to collect about 30 or 40 examples, and then I get interested in collecting something else. Does anyone else have a similar pattern of collecting?

I know I have OCD. When I collected marine tropical fish they were all I could think of. Same for roses in the garden. My wife could send the kids to get me from the garden center the way others sent the kids to the bar to fetch dad. I've collected guitars and basses. If I had all the money I've spent collecting....

Music.

I used to have a fantastic collection of house music on vinyl. Started in 1990 and ending about 2003. Covering anything related to Sasha through to contemporary progressive house.
A sad day when these all went,2 years ago.

I hunt down concert bootlegs, now. I need only one more to have a full house of Stone Roses sets (Shrewsbury Park Lane 1989,with the soundcheck, too) just in case anyone has it , I also need only 3 more to have a full compliment of Libertines sets (pre 2004). Thank goodness for the internet.

I miss my vinyl and Technics 1210 turntables...............

Well other than fragrances, I collect the following:

Pens
Passport Stamps
Messenger Bags
Flip Flops
Cd's - especially Smooth Jazz
