They offically did not have it in yet but had tester bottles.

It starts off with a unique zesty citrus notes and then *bamm* polo double black comes through.

Why bother to market something like this?

Wow that's exactly my impression! At first I assumed it was just me but after reading your post I've realized that these fragrance companies have maybe 7 or 8 formulas and each fragrance gets the addition or deletion of a note...what a pity...

I also tried Polo Explorer today at Bloomingdales and really liked it. I didn't notice any similarity to Double Black, instead some notes reminded me of both Platinum Egoiste and L'eau D'Issey - very interesting.

It's already available in the US, but it's exclusive to Bloomingdales until the end of this month, I believe. Worlwide launch is September.

Here's Polo Explorer TV commercial

There is nothing of Polo Black or Double Black in this fragrance. In fact it's not even close. Go back and resample....The dry down is not spicy or clean like either of the Black scents....the dry down is rugged, more along the lines of a Safari type scent.

I must say this: I have really really tried to like Polo/Ralph Lauren scents, but 99% of them I don't like. Maybe it's the 'base' of most of the scents. Not sure. I just can't get into them.

I do like the original Polo (green bottle), but I could probably imagine I'd only wear it once in a while, if I owned it. And the discontinued Polo Sport Extreme had the most pungent and piercing black pepper note in it. But the rest - no go.

Picked it up yesterday from the Polo Boutique @ The Forum Shops. I can see how one might say it's reminiscent of Polo Black, but it really isn't the same fragrance. They both have a fruity top note, but I'm liking Explorer much more. It Black was fleeting before drying down to a wet-cardboard note. That's not to say Explorer's top notes aren't fleeting--they are--but they have almost a bubble-gumish quality to them and the base retains a strong amber sweetness in the base.

what about longevity ? ? DB is good.. but not the best..
Yes, initial notes are kind of fleeting, but the base notes last about 4-5 hrs. On my skin Explorer lasts longer than Black or Double Black.

The last RL fragrance I bought, willingly, was Monogram in 1987! I would like very much to return to the RL fold if at least for an afternoon.

Is this available in Canada, yet?

Now my local Macy is carrying the New Explorer Polo and this time I was able to pick up the bottle and try it directly on my skin.

I do correct myself the fragrance smell nothing like Polo Double Black at all! This new polo is very warm with a deep amber base.

I do kind of like it

My dear Scentimus,

Is this a possible purchase? Are you just itchin' to add it to your litany of smellies? On a scale of 1-10 of possibility to buy, with 10 being 'sold', what do you put it at?

Thanks

The Scentimus is going to buy himself a bottle of Polo Explorer tonight!

I sampled it once more this afternoon Nordstrom this afternoon and I really like this one. I would rate this as a 8!

An eight out of ten! No, this can't be true. If Ralph has finally put out something and if Scentimus is going to buy it, then perhaps.....well, I may, too.

Just sampled Polo Explorer today at Von Maur thanks to all the good reviews on here.

And I'm not that impressed. It has that same old generic accord that proliferates a lot of other fragrances like CK Euphoria Men and YSL L'Homme, mixed with a wee bit of amber a la Prada Amber Pour Homme. Still, you can do better... but you can do worse.

Maybe I should have sampled one of the Cartiers that they just got in instead...

Just tried this on in Macy's yesterday, and what I got was pretty good sillage, average longevity, and seemed to share much in common with Hermes Rocabar.

I'm wearing Explorer today. I went with 4 sprays, but I should have used 6.

It's a very nice scent. Useful for any setting. Is it very distinctive? No.

It won't offend anyone. I will use a heavier hand next time and see how it develops. It's warm and slightly spicy.

Sampled this this past weekend, reminded me of a weaker, less sweet Blaxk XS by paco rabanne. I don't see the connection to other RL scents at all.

I love Black XS (possible holy grail) surprisingly, Explorer does very well without the super sweet strawberryish bubble bumish thing that a lot of people don't care for in Black XS, and instead leather is introduced which makes it very manly.

If you wear your scents for the ladies, I tihnk you might do better with Black XS for they are strangely drawn to teh sweetness. However, if you must have a manliness to your scents, Explorer is a winner.

Longevity is very good, but strength is average. Spray more than your usual.

Explorer is now available in Canada at the Bay. No testers right now or samples.

Sears Canada, well, they had to get rid of Givenchy and Christian Dior because they were offering un-authorized discounts! Oh, Canada.............
So very frustrating. After two minutes, the top notes are gone. All we have left is this thin, synthetic and unispiring amber of the newer designer scents. Yes, very reminiscent of Polo Double Black.

This is how the OG Nautica Competition was supposed to smell.
