It goes without saying that Basenotes is an inspiring and thoroughly pleasurable wealth of information. However, some of the terminology—in particular, the use of abbreviations—can be quite confusing to the newcomer and perfumed veteran alike. To help clarify matters, we have compiled a list of some common (and not so common) abbreviations one can find while browsing the forums on Basenotes.

Please note that this list is in no way exhaustive. Feel free to add any items that I have failed to include.

AdG – Acqua di Gio - Giorgio Armani
GIT – Green Irish Tweed – Creed
BdP – Bois du Portugal – Creed
SMW – Silver Mountain Water – Creed
MI – Millesime Imperial – Creed
VIW – Virgin Mountain Water – Creed
OV – Original Vetiver – Creed
BdG - Baie de Genievre – Creed
LMPTL – Let Me Play the Lion – Le Nez
TUS - The Unicorn Spell - Le Nez
GPH – Gucci Pour Homme – Gucci
T42 – Tea for Two – L’Artisan (I haven’t actually seen anyone use this abbreviation, but just in case… )
GV – Guerlain Vetiver
TdH – Terre d’Hermes – Hermes
DH – Dior Homme – Christian Dior
MME – Mure et Musc Extreme – L’Artisan
MKK - Musc Kublai Khan - Serge Lutens
MR - Musc Ravageur - Frederick Malle


Abbreviated Fragrance/Fashion Houses
SMN – Santa Maria Novella
CdG – Comme des Garcons
D&G – Dolce and Gabbana
MPG - Maître Parfumeur et Gantier
RL – Ralph Lauren
SL – Serge Lutens
FM – Frederick Malle
YSL – Yves Saint Laurent
AdP – Acqua di Parma
GFT – Geo F Trumper
TH/T&H – Truefitt & Hill
MH – Miller Harris
PotL - People of the Labyrinths
LV - Lorenzo Villoresi
JPG - Jean Paul Gaultier OR Jean Paul Guerlain (this can easily be sorted out from context)

Miscellaneous Abbreviations
PH – Pour Homme
EDT – Eau de Toilette
EDC – Eau de Cologne
EDP – Eau de Perfume/Parfum
A/S – After Shave
SotD – Scent of the Day
SotE – Scent of the Evening

I saw someone use JHL, what's that?
MR = Musc Ravageur

JHL is the full name of an Aramis fragrance for men.

JPG is indeed Jean Paul Gaultier, but also Jean Paul Guerlain (easy to sort these out from context)

JM - Jo Malone
JAR - looks like an acronym, but it's not; it's the name of the company, though it is also the monogram of parfumeur/jeweller, Joel Arthur Rosenthal
FB - Full Bottle
MUA - MakeUpAlley.com
NM - Nieman Marcus
SFA - Saks Fifth Avenue
BG - Bergdorf Goodman
SA - Sales Assistants
