Any ideas?

I have a father in law that has never worn cologne and is very blue collar. He mentioned he wants cologne for Xmas. Any thoughts? He's in his 50's and I know his tastes aren't the same as mine. I also don't want to drop too much $$$ on it because you never know if he'll like it. My first thought was Chrome.

If you like him, give him Yves Saint Laurent, OPIUM POUR HOMME.

If you do NOT like him, give him either Christian Dior, FAHRENHEIT or Caron, POUR UN HOMME!

Don't buy Chrome for him.
Eau Sauvage by Christian Dior is what he needs.

Other suggestions:
LE MALE - Gaultier
GUCCI pour homme

If you really want to play very very safe, buy him any Armani fragrance.

LOL!Opium is somenthing that must be tested first.It is not for every taste I think.Chrome would be fine but if you ask me Rive Gauche or Guerlain Vetiver would be winners.

I have a blue collar father in law that likes cologne.

He likes Cool Water and Polo. He has worn Safari and Kenneth Cole Reaction as well. He is about 63.

Based upon your description, I would stay with safe classics like:

Quorum by Antonio Puig (picked this up at Marshall's recently)
Azzaro pour Homme by Azzaro (perfumania? or online)
Yatagan by Caron
Zino Davidoff by Davidoff
Escada pour Homme by Escada (also saw at Marshall's)
Grey Flannel by Geoffrey Beene
Vetiver by Guerlain
Z-14 by Halston
Arpege pour Homme by Lanvin
Van Cleef & Arpels pour Homme by VC&A

IMO, you can't go wrong with any of these. Of the ones I listed, my personal favorites are Yatagan and Azzaro pour Homme.

If I understand 'blue collar' correctly within your question, I would recommend only clean, fresh scents. Le Male, Opium, other heavy, fancy scents simply don't match with it.
The new Canali line, say, could be appropriate. It is worth to give it a try. Some basenoters associated it to clean clothes, I'm sure it is quite similar to a washing powder. You must take into consideration that the man who would receive it should feel comfortable with the scent in his own -blue collar- world.
