Reason 1: To bring others joy.
I was on the metro with a 40 miniature perfume package (thank you ebay.fr!) in my hands and this older woman asked me how much it would cost to something like that since she had a similar package to send. I said I didn't know; I was the receiving end of it and the cost wasn't marked. She said that the packaging is amazing (it was scotched-taped up like no other). After that, she totally shuts down - it was obvious that she was not having the best day of her life.
I don't know why but I felt compelled to talk to her. I tried to make friendly conversation. I asked whether or not she likes perfume. She said "I like some and I hate the rest." I reached into my backpack for a sample of Shalimar by Guerlain and I said, "A gift for you." She took it without even saying thank you. She sprayed it on her hand and took a deep smell of it. Then the most magnificent thing happened: she smiled. Unfortunately, the smile only lasted a mere five seconds as she went back into her shell. During the entire metro ride, she held onto the sprayer tightly while her nose visited her hand every so often. As I got off, I smiled and said my good bye. She whispered, "Thank you. Good bye."
It's that joy that I want to bring out of people.
