I posted this last Christmas.. in tune with the season I thought I'd toss it up again...
The Night before Christmas (a fragrance junkie's tale)
'Twas the night before Christmas, and all the frag hounds were bored,
Not a parfumeur was "blending", not even Tom Ford,
The decants were placed on the mantle with care,
With hopes that fresh bottles, soon would be there,
The basenoters were snuggled all warm in their beds,
While their favorite bedtime scents wafted softly around their heads,
My bottle of Cacherel, without it's cap,
Had just settled down for a long winter's nap
When outside the door, someone was doing the most noisiest thing,
I hoped it was the postman, with my new bottle of Dzing!
Away to the window, I flew like a flash,
I opened the front door, in search for my stash!
The parcel on the breast of the new fallen snow,
Made me forget the new bottles I received a week ago,
When what to my wondering eyes should appear,
It was Frederick Malle himself, he came to bring Christmas cheer!
What a well dressed ol' chap, and he smelled just sublime,
Maybe an ambery base, with a slight hint of lime?
More suave than Ray Fiennes, he produced a large score,
When I saw what he carried, my jaw hit the floor,
It was "MR" and "VDR" and something called Dinner,
He had FT, and Chergui, oh I felt like a sinner!
Laid out on the couch, lined up on the wall,
I wish I cound pounce forth and sample them all!
A bundle of testers he had flung over his back,
He looked just like a "Scent Saviour" when he opened his pack,
Something sweet, something soft, something that smelled quite of berry,
And something like Joop!, that leaned heavy on cherry,
His sly little mouth curled up in a bow,
And his tie was as crisp and white as the snow,
The stump of his pipe, he held tight in his jaw,
While the waft of Havana, slid up my nose without flaw,
He had a slim little face, and a pocket full of samples,
oh how he had such wonderful, plentiful samples!
He soon let me know I had nothing to fear,
For he had just arrived to make the joy of Christmas more clear,
He didn't break in to steal, rape or pillage,
He wanted to bring me new scents with great sillage,
With a doft of his top-hat, he disappeared.. out the door,
I was brimming with an excitement that I've experienced before,
As I tore open a package and held the bottle in hand,
I spritzed like a madman, waiting for fragrance to land,
What a lovely soft chypre, with pine accents and clove,
With a smokey rum note that was reminiscent of my wood burning stove,
I sat there in wonder, as season's magic grew near,
Merry CHRISTMAS to basenotes, and have a great New Year!
