The first person to pm me with both the name of the gentleman in my avatar and why he is wearing what he is wearing (e.g., why would he be posing in that costume) will win a package containing the following samples:

Chanel Platinum Egoiste
CDG Series 2: Red Sequoia
Parfums de Nicolai New York
L'Artisan Perfumeur Voleur de Roses
Creed Royal Scottish Lavender
Creed Spring Flower
Zino Davidoff
Lacoste Elegance
Tom Ford for Men
Montale Chypre Vanille, Oud Ambre, Sandflowers and Orient Extreme

No partial credit. Two hints are nobel prize winner and charlottesville, va.

Good luck,

Congratulations to Caoleus, who responded first to the question posed above with the entirely correct answer. The gentleman (a term used loosely) pictured in my avatar is William Faulkner, the Nobel Prize winning author. He posed for the portrait in the riding habit of Farmington Hunt Club (now Country Club) in Charlottesville, Virginia, which he was asked to join during his tenure as writer-in-residence at the University of Virginia.

Other respondents were either only partially correct (i.e., wrong identity or not supplying the information re: Farmington), or were entirely correct, but were beaten to the punch by Caoleus. Many thanks to those who responded for taking the time.

I will now retire the Faulkner avatar.

That was a fun contest.

Yesterday I tried for 15 minutes to find something related to your avatar, but when I look up the Wikipedia page of William Faulkner, I'm confronted with the typewriter he used - a picture I *definitely* saw yesterday in my search, but I don't remember where or what.

This was very enjoyable - kudos for thinking of it!

I identified the 'gentleman' but not the purpose of his pose.

I was sure it was Walter (the husband in the sitcom "Maude").
