i like royall musk and bay rhum. I also really like pinaud because it reminds me of my dad and grandfather. Which do you guys like?

Has anyone tried an of the other pinauds like lilac vegetal or musk or lime sec?

What about colonel conk lime or amber?

Any insight on good, inexpensive barber shop frags would be greatly appreciated since i am a fan of nostalgia in a bottle?

Oh and by the way...for those who are outdoorsy or play sports in hot weather i have a great tip....get a squeeze water bottle and fill it with ice, dump a bottle of Florida Water(can buy it at any drugstore) in on top the ice and spray yourself down liberally when hot...u smell great and it cools u down like nothing else...my mom used to do this for me at swim meets when i had to be in the sun waiting for events all day long.!

I've never experience the "American barbershop" idea so can't quite relate there. Where I come from, the place smelt of sanitizers and shampoo, almost no relation to bay rhum or even shaving.

But for a bit of nostalgia, albeit not my own; I'll go with Brut. Something about its generous display in Stallone's "Over the Top" really portray the ideal image of its time that even though I've never been there, it feels as if I did.

what a shame...if you come here to visit, put it at the top of your list to visit a classy barbershop, or any barbershop for that matter...when you walk in you smell a melange of barbersol and pinaud...its great. Also its so enjoyable to recieve a trim and a hot towell shave while drinking a beer and shooting the breeze with some funny old men.

I love Over the Top, but im not a big brut fan...thanks for your comments.

The barbershops here smell almost the same. I like it too. And I like Rive Gauche like crazy.

I would say try Carroll's Royal Briar cologne. It's in the same genre.

similarly, i've never really been able to get the barbershop thing - over here the salons just smell like clean hair/hair products. i do like the powder in prada amber ph, although i don't think this is quite as old-school as you're talking about.

Jockey Club by Caswell Massey is the extreme smell of barber shop for me. The dry down is 100% Talcum Powder. Love it!

I'm from Europe, so I don't really know what scent it is exactly that you are referring to, but I would say Grigioperla reminds me of getting a shave.

Jockey Club C&M of course.

and try Romeo Gigli

Tabac Original is one to smell for that "barber shop" experience.

I'll chime in with my usual recommendation for Grafton by Truefitt & Hill, which is, after all, a barbershop.

Clubman
Canoe
Lilac Vegetal
Florida Water

All of the above remind me of those smell's!

Since the above two were mentioned, I'll have to add Wild Country by Avon, since it smells like them (but a little sweeter if you ask me). I like it the best of the three, with Canoe my least favorite because it gives me a headache.

I guess I was growing up just at the end of the "barbershop" era here in the US. I still remember going to them as a child, and the smell that reminds me of the one I went to is Habit Rouge by far. Second, I think Mugler's Cologne type smells... but maybe that could be the lime that other's have mentioned. I also have Trumper's Spanish Leather... it also invokes some thoughts of those old days!

(I have to mention that my father had Habit Rouge in those days, and we always went together, so maybe that's part of it too! )

Lilac Vegtal or Bay Rum.

Lilac Vegtal is a pretty good all round fragrance. Very Basic.

C.O.Bigelow No. 032 Bay Rum fills the bill nicely for me
