Compliments where the person recognises the fragrance

Coming from the guy at the desk next to me when I sat down at the library today:

'That's some nice Terre D'hermes mate'.

I know it's easily recogniseable but still, how cool is that!?? I'm not a fan of the fragrance myself, I just tried a spray of my Dad's in the morning but it was great someone recognised it.

Has this happened to anyone else?

I wonder, is it cool or not?

On one hand, sure, nice to have someone being at least that into scents, but I can't help but feel like someone guessed correctly the colour of my underwear.

I mean, fragrances are the best when it's 'exclusive' and 'unique'. That's why Acqua di Gio is so unpopular here on Basenotes, and Creeds are being worshipped even though probably half of the people don't own them.

I always get "Ooooh, you put on Lagerfeld just for me!" from the older of my two sisters. Also, I have two different people (one straight woman, one gay man) who always come up to sniff me at DBA -- www.dbametro.org -- meetings to ask if I'm wearing "that Black Spices cologne" (Noir Epices).

Also, I usually get oodles of compliments on my Black Aoud from all of my friends, most of whom refer to as "that expensive Black stuff you wear."

One time a couple of years ago I wore way too much Kouros. I was at a hair salon to get my hair done. A hairdresser busy with another customer in the other corner of the hair salon asked him "Is that Kouros you're wearing?". "Er... what?", he said. And I just felt ashamed, knowing it was me oozing all over the place. I didn't even like Kouros, I was just giving it a chance.

At the hospital last week I was assisting a patient and he said, "You smell good. What you are wearing reminds me of Shalimar. My mother used to wear it."
I was actually wearing Jicky and I will say this man made my day. I gave him the mini version of the story behind it, how some feel it was a "forerunner" of Shalimar, so it was neat that he made the association.
He went on to say that he used to sell fragrances, and suggested a few that I might like, since I struck him as an "earthy" person
HI suggestions were Aromatics Elixir, Cinnabar, and oh, rats, I can't remember them all... This earth Mother is getting old.

But the BEST part was when he told me that sometimes HE wears Shalimar.
I thought to myself, "Honey, there are some folks I'd like for you to meet...."

hmmm.... I wonder if he's here already??? If he looks like a Basenoter, and if he smells like a Basenoter, ....

man..that has happend to me with buberry london and creed millesime imperial.

kid at work asked me if i was wearing burberry london .. i was damn it this scent is getting to mainstream. sad because i like it alot. but i dont like smelling like everyone else.

the other day a girl i hugged tells me wow i love creed imperial.. i was like f%$k.. are that many people wearing creeds these days. is creed still considered niche? and to recognize it on the fly.. hence why i am cutting my way through the niche fragrance jungle to find some scents that "most " people have never smelled.

My brother was very proud of himself and felt like he knew a lot about fragrances, when he was able to recognize Fahrenheit and Acua di Gio on other people. Gradually he can recognize much more than those.
I don't remember anybody naming the scent I was wearing, however if they liked the scent and asked me what it was, later they were recognizing it and mentioning its name and/or asking me to wear that one again.

One of my friends, she always comes with me when I go shopping for a new fragrance, and usually she's the only person that realises what it is, unless I give in to my ultimate guilty pleasure. CK One, over 50% of the people I know recognise that one.
