Poll: Your Favourite Niche Houses

Let's hear your thoughts! Let's see if the outcome is the same as what many predict.
L'Artisan is my number one by far. Serge Lutens is up there too.
Extremely hard to choose.

Voted for Comme des Garcons and Le Labo.
Well, There IS only one correct answer: CREED
post #5 of 61
Acqua di Parma & Penhaligons

Also (unlisted) - Carthusia
The ones I'm becoming more familiar with and love what I've tried:
Lutens, L'Artisan, and CdG.

Hell--I'm a newby frag ho'---gimme-m-all!!!
Never mind this comment, I am just curious:

Why would Acqua di Parma, a resurrected perfume and cosmetics company, affiliate of the L. Vuitton Empire, and therefore sold at every place you can get Chanel, Dior, and Guerlain be called a niche company?

"Other": in my case that's ETRO
Diptyque, MPG, L'Artisan, and Creed for me. Not to say there aren't great products from the other houses listed, but those were the ones wild enough in general for me to click.
Voted for L'Artisan, Frédéric Malle, Serge Lutens, Lorenzo Villoresi, Santa Maria Novella, The Different Company, Comme des Garçons and Annick Goutal.

Would have voted for Etro , Gobin Daudé and Ormonde Jayne if they had been included.

Could have voted for Creed, Diptyque and Maître Parfumeur et Gantier, but there aren't as many scents from these houses I love as those I don't like at all, so no vote.
Diptyque, L'Artisan, Serge Lutens and Annick Goutal keep me very happy.
Voted for Le Labo, Serge Lutens, and L'Artisan. These three have some of my most favorite scents
post #12 of 61
Funny that Creed is atop both the most favorite and most overrated niche house polls. A very polarizing house indeed, as is the case with most institutions that consciously posit themselves as exclusive.
In the Other category, I crammed Tauer, Ormonde Jayne and Olivier Durbano into one vote.

I also voted for Creed, L'Artisan, Montale, Lutens and Czech & Speake.
WOW! How does one vote for just one? I took into consideration a House that could possibly meet all my need's, and not just one does. I guess the one that comes closest would be MPG, with SL right on it's heels.
Comme Des Garcons, Frederic Malle, serge Lutens, Liptique and L'Artisan for me.
Frédéric Malle

duh
Creed, Montale, and L'Artisan for me.
Serge Lutens and The Different Company

Same for me plus Montale!

This is one of the polls where you may vote for more than one. But you're locked out now that you've voted...

I voted today for Mitt Romney... Er, I mean Creed, Bond No 9, LAP, SL, and Le Labo.

Dan

Creed, Annick Goutal, and 'other' for Neil Morris, and Parfums de Nicolai; lest we forget Gandhara and Sacre Bleu, respectively.
L'Artisan, Amouage & The Different Company.
Creed, Comme des Garcons, Acqua di Parma, L'Artisan. I will add Giorgio Armani Prive, Comptoir Sud Pacifique, Bond No.9.....
Gary
Voted for L' Artisan and "OTHER", which is Andy Tauer.

I find it interesting that people are more willing to state which houses they hate, than which they love. I will post later on comparing the results of the two polls.

Interesting indeed. Kind of sad, don't you think. Oh well...it is, what it is. Thanks for taking the time to do a 'favourite' poll, to balance out some of the bad energy generated by the 'least favourite' poll.
Creed, Villoresi, Montale.

Not listed: Trumpers
I voted for several, too numerous to mention. I would also add Profumum, Parfumerie Generale, Parfums DelRae, Keiko Mecheri, Les Néréides, Jalaine, and Parfum d'Empire.
I voted for:
L'Artisan Parfumeur
Montale
Serge Lutens

but would have really wanted to vote for:
Parfumerie Generale
Ormonde Jayne
Parfums DelRae
Keiko Mecheri
Les Néréides
Jalaine
Parfum d'Empire

Yes, pretty much just what Sloan said
Although I own and really enjoy the Creeds (BdP is my absolute favorite), I cast a single vote for L'Artisan in this poll. I really enjoy the thematic evolution of their offerings, and can't wait to expand my collection of L'Artisan fragrances beyond TfT, BdF, Mechant Loup and Dzing!. I honestly look forward to wearing each of these - they are never an afterthought selection.
Perhaps the most representative poll in recent years (more than 100 voters so far):

Top Winners (so far):

  • 1 – Creed, collecting almost 50% of all votes 46%
  • 2 – Serge Lutens 33%
  • 3 - L’Artisan Parfumeur 32%
  • 4 – Montale 28%
  • 5 – Comme des Garcons 19%
  • 6 - Editions de Parfums Frederic Malle 18%
  • 7 – Maitre Parfumeur 17%
  • 8 – Lorenzo Villoresi 15%
  • 9 - C&S 12%
  • 10 – Diptyque 11%
  • 11 – Annick Goutal 10%

For me, Creed and their 55 or more perfumes do not qualify as niche any longer. And therefore, I would give the laurel to Lutens, L’Artisan and Montale. Montale’s popularity among Basenoters is really stunning since their line is clearly the youngest of them all. I guess their success is based on a novelty in French perfumery: floral oudhs. Comme des Garcons and all others follow with a respectful distance of almost 10 points.
I voted for : L'Artisan Parfumeur, Comme des Garcons, The Different Company. Would had loved to see Parfumerie Generale as an option (like some of the others have already mentioned.
I like many of them but ... None of them has the keeness of Lorenzo Villoresi to me.
I voted for Serge Lutens, Diptyque, Acqua di Parma, Annick Goutal.
I would also have voted for Profumum and Parfum d'Empire if they had been listed.
Honorable mention for Creed, Éditions de Parfums Frédéric Malle, and Montale.

This poll convinced me that I have a lot more sampling to do, since I've only had any exposure to just over half of the niche houses listed.
Because of this, I probably ought to have abstained from voting. But then I've never been a big fan of abstinence.
I voted for one only, Penhaligons.

Creed doesn't do anything for me on the whole. I have a few Bonds, and one or two of others.

Penhaligons are the only house whose fragrances I consistently like across the board, male or female.
SL, from the list.

Others:
Parfum d'Empire
Parfumerie Generale

I agree that Acqua di Parma is not niche even though I like their line. So, I did not vote for it.
In order of preference:

Amouage
Maitre
D'Orsay
Creed
DelRae
d'Empire
I voted for three:

L'Artisan Parfumeur
Serge Lutens
Frederic Malle

I almost voted for ten!
Of the houses listed I find that the ones I have tried have two or three really outstanding scents with the others falling flat, so I'm afraid I can't vote for a favorite house. Of the houses that were not listed that I'm curently enjoying testing are Profumum and Parfumerie Generale; both have some really well crafted perfumes that are worth checking out.
L' Artisan. I was able to sample the most of their line and I do not believe they are overhyped as a whole because I like a fair amount of them. I think they offer a good variety of scents as well.

I have sampled only a few Creeds and Sl and it hasn't impressed me enough to say yes they are my new favourite. Again it does have to do with availability, maybe if I was able to sniff them more I could find more to be impressed with if that makes sense.
L' Artisan, Diptyque and Creed... Cause I liked them and that's, that....
From what limited exposure I have had Acqua di Parma and Creed.
L'Artisan and The Different Company. Big mention to Creed. Also growing fond of Neil Morris, not on the list.

Must be Florence. I don't know a quarter of what they offer, but from what I have inhaled so far, Santa Maria Novella also can take my breath away!
I am slightly worried about the silence from Lorenzo Villoresi. There was a rumor he would develop more room fragrances in future, but he hasn't, has he? Organizing events, that's what seems to keep him busy nowadays. Ah well, I still haven't even bought Dilmun and Incensi, so I have things to look forward to anyway!
My vote goes to Creed and Bond No. 9. Suits me the best.
My first choices: Creed, Serge Lutens, Frédéric Malle. Second for Penhaligon's. Third for Lorenzo Villoresi.
Correct me if I am wrong, but Comme des Garcons is a designer. Therefore it can not be niche.
Parfums de Nicolaï.
Looks like Creed wins again...
How Is Creed Beating Serge Lutens??!?!

[please imagine this post in block capitals for maximum effect]

Penhaligon's!

It's a direct result of the sweet deal Creed made with Costco. But, it's not over yet. And we can always demand a recount.
I voted L'Artisan and The Different Company.

And Other: Parfums de Nicolai and i Profumi di Firenze.

Glad to see this poll is still up and running!

Mine would be Malle/Creed/Bond/Montale
I'm on a Serge dirge, a Creed need and I'm looking for a Bond bond.
Il Profumo, Parfums Generale, Bois 1920, Odori, many of the the real niche houses are missing. Creed, L'Artisan, Goutal, Parma, Lutens are almost about as niche as Dior. Everyone's wearing them and they are easy to find in big cities.

Cheers,
Al
I see that the Lutens brigade (the quiet latent perfumistas I assume) has jumped over to Basenotes and is in full force here...68 vs 64, who said Basenotes was "Creed notes"?

My top 3 remain unchanged:

Creed / Malle / Czech & Speake

Hmmpph....Ayala Moriel, Aftelier perfumes, Tauer perfumes etc, many of the real niche houses are missing. Parfums Generale, Bois 1920, etc are about almost as niche as L'Artisan, Creed et a. Everyone's wearing them and they are easy to find in big cities.

Cheers!

Good Lord - election season upon us again. Thankfully there have been no push-polls. I can only imagine (showcasing my own party prejudices...)

Question #1:

Do you love:

(1) Over-niched, single-city, monotonously bottled Bond No.9?
(2) Over-priced, outmoded-techniqued, Jesus-rock-scandal-linked "Creed"?
(3) The only truly niche scents, made without commercial compromise, by attractive perfumers [see enclosed photos, suitable for framing - DO NOT BEND], for people of taste, with gender equality for all fragrance lovers...The Different Company?

Question #2:

Would you be willing to stand up against blatant commercialism, dangerous pseudo-niche fragrances, and the big-designer lobby by supporting truly niche fragrances with your contribution of:

(1) $90
(2) $130
(3) $225
(4) Other __________
