Ok, just saw " Elizabeth The Golden Age " and loved Cate Blanchett once again. The definitive Elizabeth!

It occurs to me that along with The Spartans, Mad Roman Emperors, Joan of Arc, The (American) Civil War; Napoleon, WW1 & 2, that The Elizabethan Era rocked!

I mean, who really cares about The Teapot Dome Scandal when you can read about Mary, Queen of Scots?

Thanks Mario, I appreciate the points - I need them.

Oddly enough, the Monty Python version of the Spanish Inquisition may in fact be somewhat closer to the historical truth than what is generally assumed.

I saw a documentary a while back arguing that while some Inquisitors did indeed go overboard, most didn't, and the too enthusiastic ones were reprimanded. Their manual on conducting torture limited them to 15 minutes of it - which was a far cry from what usually happened in regular government dungeons those days - by comparison to the latter poor soul's treatment, the Inquisition's treatment would indeed have almost been a comfy pillow. Their very bad reputation apparently mainly came from the propogandists of the monarchs in England.

Also, the Inquisition is generally credited with not allowing the witch hunts and witch crazes in Spain and Italy which caused the deaths of tens of thousands of innocent women in northern Europe - since they didn't believe witches could do the things people claimed. Instead they had women who were proved to have practiced witchcraft fined.

"We skipped the light fandango--"

No, wait!
That's " A Lighter Shade of Pale" --NO, Mario you mean " A Whiter Shade of Pale. "

Damn my senility! I've only heard Homburg from PH, and Eric Clapton, and Annie Lennox and Joe Cocker a few hundred times . . .

1. Don't keep lyrics to Hormburg in a hormburg.
2. Never re-record " Poison Ivy. " -- It's bad luck.
3. Where are all the babes in this forum that like to read up on Elizabeth and Mary? Not one posted. Blast the Spanish Inquisition!

Tripping over my overcoat,

Mario

Well, as usual fredericktoo knows his stuff, but for 'the youngsters' I've evidently made the quiz too hard!

Yes, one is C --if you picked A you're may be an Errol Flynn fan. The ' Duke of Lorca ' was the bad guy in "Adventures of Don Juan."

2 is B and the trickiest question of all. Henry Stewart? Well, it's ususally written Stuart and he was her husband, not her father. A and D refer to Mary Tudor, Liz's half sister and Queen of England before her. Gotta keep your Marys right . . .

OK The new simplified quiz---only 2 choices:

3. Mary of Guise died

A. Poisoned by Sir Francis Walsingham (or his agents)
C. Of Dropsy

4. Robert Dudley, 1st Earl of Leicester and Elizabeth's " favorite "

A. Though a ladies' man, always remained Elizabeth's loyal subject.
B. For reasons never fully explained, plotted with The Duke of Norfolk against Elizabeth, but she spared his life.

5. Mary Tudor

A. Plotted with The Earl of Hertford to assasinate her Protestant brother Edward, but was foiled by Miles Hendon
D.Was in love with Prince Phillip , before he became King Phillip the Second of Spain, and sent The Armada against England.

6. Edward the Sixth

A. Was succeeded by Lady Jane Grey to the English Throne
D. Was a stillborn child.

7. Elizabeth

A. Had red hair and blue eyes
D. Was Phillip's sister in law.

8. Phillip the Second

A. Was declared King of England by Mary Tudor
E. Was declared an idiot by Mary of Guise.

9 The Armada was commanded by:

B. The Duke of Medina Sidonia, who suffered from sea sickness, and thought it was a dumb plan.
C. Don Diego Vega, the king's favorite and a national military hero.

10. The Spanish Inquisition ended

A. In 1834
D. It never officially ended.

OK, I'm off to interogate heretics,
