Compliments: How, Where, When?

I always hear a lot of people around here posting that they've received compliments on what they're wearing. Here's a newbie question, even though I've had my fair share of posts here in the past couple months since I've joined. I'm always self conscious about over spraying or spraying too little of my scents. I've worn plenty of fragrances (albeit mainstream/department store stuff) from my own modest collection and stuff I've tested. I've worn stuff as loud as Le Male to something as subtle as Mugler Cologne with some corny (Paris Hilton Heir and Curve Chill) in between. So it's not like I'm wearing something incredibly weird to the masses. I'm not expecting people to pick out notes or anything, but a normal person would just tell someone if it smells good or not no matter what it is. That is, if it were to happen.

I know some people have worn stuff that has stopped people in their tracks just to ask what it is at the most random places. Never once have I garnered any compliments from anyone. Not even my friends, unless I asked. Usually when I ask, it's "can you smell that from there?" Usually I just ask questions in a way to know if I'm wearing too much or too little. Like once I wore Terre D'Hermes and asked a friend if he could smell it, he responded with a "Oh, yea dude! It's nice!" That's probably the only positive response I've gotten from anyone. There was one time a couple weeks ago while waiting for a table inside a restaurant when my friend said, "Dude, I can smell like...3 colognes." I was wearing TM Cologne, some guy walked by with some heavy oriental Vicks Vapor rub smelling one (M7?), and he was wearing D&G Light Blue himself. I'm usually aiming for a 3-4 feet distance, not smack in the face, but a light hint of it. I've had an instance when I accidentally oversprayed and turned Burberry Touch into Burberry Bitch Slap.

I also have oddly dry skin and a fair skin color, maybe ever-so slightly darker, whatever the typical skin color it is for an Asian male from California. By all means, I'm not ashy dry or anything. It's just that colognes tend to get soaked up into my skin. I'm using lotion/body butter/body oil (not all at once of course) to extend the life of whatever I'm wearing. It helped a lot. L'eau Par Kenzo disappeared on me within 2 hours when I was testing a vial, but after using lotion at the application spots, it extended it's life for 3-4 more hours the next time I wore it. So I sorta understand how my skin works with longevity and sillage. I had to learn that I really need to wear a fragrance 3-4 or even more times to decide if I should buy it yet due to varying conditions with longevity and sillage (weather, skin, mood, environment, etc).

Everyday, I keep hoping someone just asks, "Excuse me, you smell nice, what is that?" Even going as far as randomly walking through crowded areas at the mall or wait in lines for whatever just to do some tests. Highly doubt that would happen in any of those given situations, but it'd make me feel a bit better about the bottle I just plunked some good money for. I can't invest that much into smelling good if it's just for me only. I might as well just buy more Curve and Designer Imposters then. :P A friend of mine who's worn his fair share of colognes told me that the only way he tests them out is at a strip club while getting lap dances. He's told me some of them have gotten extra frisky over DKNY Red Delicious and he has a bite mark to prove it. LOL. I suppose it's a little vain to hope someone says something without you asking. Heh. Just once without me asking would be nice.

Anyhoo, that's the end of my soapbox.

I usually get compliments when I am getting a hug. That way the usually shorter girl is near my chest or neck, thus getting a good chance to smell me. The odds of getting a compliment is small because people just don't feel the need to be outwardly polite anymore.

I have heard that people know when I get to a certain location, even if they can't see me, because they smell me. It is no that I smell the same all the time because I don't. I almost always wear something different. They just know it's me. They don't feel like they have to tell me about how I smell, wether good or bad.

That is my experience. I wear for me anyway so I'm not too bothered by it.

Don't worry, I usually don't get compliments either. I think those that are heavier on the sprays will most likely get noticed, and receive compliments. I'm a light sprayer, enough for me to notice, but usually not enough for others to. I wore 3 sprays of M7 today, and I was a little self-conscious that I oversprayed. (Close quarters stuffy classrooms). I was thinking the otherday, maybe I should do a 5-6 spray routine, get the sides of my neck, and see if I get compliments. But I think it would be as much as a distraction for me as it would others.

I generally only get compliments from hugs or EXTREMELY close quarters, and thats usually when I expect to be in close proximity, so I spray more than 'my usual'.

Burberry Bitch Slap. That one cracked me up.

Ditto.

Most of the scents I choose are close-to-the-skin, so someone would have to shimmy up close to tell what I'm wearing.

If I get compliments from random strangers I know I'm wearing too much cologne. I'd rather get them when I get hugged or kiss (then I usually get them).
i only ever get compliments from members of the opposite sex who know me very well. strangers feel no need to compliment me - well, these days strangers feel no need to talk to you, let alone compliment - and guys just seem... i'm not sure, it just doesn't seem like a guy thing to do!

Ck One has leaked all through my schoolbag..my friends always are like "mmm what's that smell" when i have my bag sitting on my desk. Unfortunately i dont too often get compliments on what i'm wearing, however i do within like half an hour from spraying it..probably because they can't smell it. The best experience i've had was with ZeroDegrees by Nutrimetics, which i got a while ago and is mysteriously missing, people used to say i smelled nice hours after application.

Aqua Velva spilled, supermarket, 5 compliments in ac couple of hours. If you are into fragrances because of compliments, you will be disappointed. Perhaps that is not your case, but do not worry too much about it. I get most of my compliments when:
1. I offer my jacket to a friend.
2. I go to the bathroom, take my small atomizer and spray once. It usually kicks up the top and the base notes at the same time. I go outside and people get a whiff of my fragrance. Of course this is not recommended with all fragrances.

Thanks for the responses guys. I was just wondering why people make it such a point to mention getting compliments (not like it's a bad thing) on a particular fragrance. The whole time, I was like, "Well, no one ever says anything to me." So at least these experiences I'm reading here really shed some light on how, where, and when. It was kind of a "well, if they're getting some, why can't I?" thing. I'm pretty confident I don't own anything that smells bad and at least smells good, so I should just run with that. =)
It depends on the situation and how approachable you look. Other things affect it too... If you have BO or bad breath, but your cologne smells good, well they kinda cancel each other out. A guy I had in a group of mine at uni doused himself in Joop Go, but his breath smelt like a used toilet. It kinda cancelled it out.
I used to work in a shoestore and when I wore Polo Blue it garnered compliments nearly every time I wore it (from 35 year old + ladies, mind you!)
Now I don't really wear frags to impress anyone except my girlfriend or myself... So I couldn't give a rats what anyone else thinks, although its always nice to occaisionally be told you smell good.
I only got one compliment my whole life.
I tend to give compliments whenever I smell anything but only to people I know. I know how nice it feels to receive a compliment so I tend to I do it a lot with my friends and family. It doesn't have to be fantastic. If the scent is okay, I tend to comment on it. If it's awesome it's a whole conversation. If it's annoying I don't say anything.

Almost never happens that I smell a complete stranger and feel like I want to compliment them on their scent (it has to be something really awesome). Stopping someone and asking them about their frag is just awkward. I would do that on a bus or in a line though, but so far nothing I've smelt on a stranger was that much of a compliment getter.
I've never gotten a compliment from a stranger before, but I have gotten a few good compliments from friends and aquaintances. I'm a somewhat heavy sprayer (about 6 sprays) but nothing so bad as to choke the air. Usually the times I get compliments are when I go in for a hug. I do have a couple of occasions where it was not a hug situation compliment!

- Was walking outdoors to a party (5 min walk). I was walking with two of the young men who live at the student residences with me. One I had know 2 weeks and the other I met that night. The guy I'd met that night was saying "I can smell something. Can you smell that? It smells good." I was walking about 3 metres away so I can closer and asked if it was me and he was like "Yea, that's it!"

- Same night, at the party and waiting in the line to use the toilet. As always, this was a grand place to socialise and meet some of the people who lived in the house. One of the guys was talking to me in close quarters and smelt really good! So I told him so. Since I had shown an interest in fragrance, he replied back that I smelt really good too.

- Came up behind one of my male friends and covered his eyes, saying "Guess who?" He guessed straight away, his reasoning being "I could tell by your perfume." Which was interesting that someone recognised me by my fragrance!

Well I'll prattling on here really. Gone totally off-topic. Sorry! Either way, I do agree that I like to get compliments.... unfortunately it is very rare that a stranger will come out of the blue and do so. Society seems to be one where we all ignore each other in public.
I've only gotten a direct compliment once, and it was from a coworker. Even my friends - male or female - rarely say anything about the fragrances I wear.

I enjoy the fragrances, and I know others do as well based on a few "roundabout" compliments here and there. It's all good ... once I learned to not expect people to say anything 99.99% of the time
post #15 of 40
I think if you also keep your personal hygene and grooming on a high level, you might have better chances to catch a compliment. But yeah, compliments are scarce nowadays in closed cultures.
here's an alternate theory... for people who always smell good (see: basenoters), perhaps it's like someone who always dresses well. if it's a consistent part of who they are, i'm not going to compliment them on it every time i see them as it would just get old.

Haha, you have a point. Maybe that's it. It's like if one of my friends telling me my car is cool or something every time they see it (I drive a Subaru impreza). They're used to it, so it's nothing unusual except, "Hey, wearing something new?" I guess the people around me are used to the way I look and smell nowadays. I lost a bit of weight too, but no one comments or notices since it was a gradual thing and they've seen me quite often. The ones who haven't seen me in months noticed some changes.
Compliments are strange animals. I've lost 30 lbs over the past year, and it took 25 lbs before most people began to take notice. Lately, I have received a lot, especially when I wear clothes that fit properly!

Scents are a different thing. Usually my wife or mom will comment when I hug them, but that's about it. Other than them, I have received just 4 cologne compliments in the past 3 years. 2 in church and 2 in work situations (Arpege, D&G, Polo Black and Terre d'Hermes).

I believe people do not want you to think they're flirting.
I get compliments often. However, I usually get, "She always smells good". For those that know me, they usually won't comment again until I wear something new. I do get compliments from strangers too. I even get compliments from the patients I work with. We aren't suppose to wear perfume, but my current position doesn't involve direct patient care, but I still help the nurses out from time to time. I even got compliments from my cancer patients. I was told that I should never wear perfume around them, but most of my paitients loved my perfume and would always comment on what I was wearing.

I love perfume and take a bath in it. I may spray 8 to 18 times as well as spreading it all over my upper body. It also depends on which perfume I'm wearing as well. You can bet that whatever I'm wearing someone near will know. I really don't care if I offend the next person. If they don't like my perfume, they are free to move. I wear my perfume for me. I love smelling perfume on myself. After about an hour or so, the perfume settles down and gives me lovely whiffs throughout the day. So don't be afraid to spray on that frag. If you love what you have on, then tell yourself you smell good. I compliment myself everytime I get a chance, cause nobody loves me more than me. I hug myself and say, "Love Me". You should try some different ways to apply your frag. It's a learning process. It took me a while to figure out what works for me.

Ahhhh, true inspiration

Mostly complimented by close family members, "You always smell so good" - "Why, thank you, it's such & such" Rarely from strangers, except when I wear Millesime Imperiale and M7

"I've had an instance when I accidentally oversprayed and turned Burberry Touch into Burberry Bitch Slap."

Bloody hilarious. The only compliment I've gotten was from the girl I'm sort-of seeing. None from strangers.

Lol reminds me of Indie Guy and Rive Gauche!

I got a comment at school.

"Mm you smell so good, can I hug you please?" Yes, she is a friend of mine and she hugged me. This was when I was wearing Ferrari Black.
Hi Rawk Lee, maybe you just haven't found a scent that really works with your body chemistry, something that really stands out in a good way.

Sometimes though it's just chance!

If you enjoy wearing scents then that's enough

DamnittoHell!

Yes I get compliments but they're never enough! When I wear Himalaya I expect people to kneel and ask for a blessing! Beautiful women to rip my clothes off when I put on Roma , and the entire poker table at the casino to cower in fear when I don Bulgari Black..

----And then I get pissed offf when I get the wrong compliments!

It's annoying to have little old ladies telling me how nice I smell with John Varvatos!-- Or co workers say how good I smell with MontBlanc Individuel

When I think I spent megabucks on Creeds and Serge Lutens and MPG and other niche frags to seduce a million women by next Sunday, AND to get offered a presidency of a Fortune 500 company by Monday!

Where are the Supermodels and the CEO's? Huh?
I want a refund on MKK and BdP and Santal Noble--It's outrageous! It's---
Oh um. never mind. Er . . .
I only wear frags because they please me, not anybody else; and for their um inherently artistic compositions . . .

Ok, time to do za-zen and get enlightened.
Or at least take my meds . . .

Cheers,

Mario

I don't know why but I garner tons of compliments. I'm on a college campus though so many girls are open about sex, smells, and well... sex. So I guess that helps. Although, when I'm back home I get told I smell good too. Usually by attractive females. They seem to be the only ones open enough to confront me about it.
Okay I've totally given up on people. Today I was (heavily) wearing Very Irresistible, a friend of mine came near and he was wearing Euphoria Men, I complimented him on his scent, and was kinda expecting that he would at least comment on mine, since I was totally overpowering him, but no, not a single word. Eventually I had to bring up the topic to have a little fragrance conversation..
But hey I'm not complaining.

I've never got complimented directly by a stranger, though I did some testing to see if people noticed, and they seemed to. As in, I sprayed my juice more towards my left side, and people were more likely to sit to my left. Then I switched to the right, and they'd sit to my right. This was in psychology class, too; I should have asked for extra credit! I guess what I'm saying is that you might not get verbally complimented, but someone's body language might try to give you the hint that they think you smell good.

I agree with you. I notice it when someone detects and likes my scent. They might not say anything, but you're somehow certain that they like it.. Feels nice, but it wouldn't hurt to comment.

I've received compliments from loved ones, but never from strangers. However, an elderly lady once complimented me on the scent of my sunscreen (I was sans frag and reapplying 30+ at a crowded bus stop at the time)!

Well, look at the bright side. As long as the cats don't sneeze when you walk into a room . . .

( It's only happened to me with 2 frags)

Interesting. Good point!
most compliments are from acquintances whether direct or indirect.....few are from complete strangers(but those happen often enough as well - typically females of all ages)....and a huge amount from sexual partners(who obviously have to sniff it upclose and personal).
Today I gave my first compliment to a total stranger. It felt awkward but I'm sure next time I'll be better. A girl about my age sat right next to me on a bus. She smelled very familiar, so I tuned to her, made a gesture as if I was spraying a perfume bottle and said "Is this Euphoria?" and she replied "No" then she said a name that I couldn't catch. We had a little conversation and then my stop came.
I got my first unsolicited compliments this past weekend on the subway here in Boston. I was riding a crowded train and was standing next to a group of co-eds from one of the local colleges. They were clearly having a good time out and about on a Saturday and so the bold one asked me what I was wearing because it smelled really good and she wanted her boyfriend to wear it. I replied that it was called "Cool Water". She asked me if it was expensive and I told her that she could probably get it on sale from the local CVS for less than $20. By this point we were at their stop and they exited in a youthful burst out onto the platform. Funny that "Cool Water" was the one to get my first reaction.

It's always the really simple ones that get the compliments.

Not the case here. I only started receiving compliments after I began wearing things like Parfum d'Habit and Habit Rouge.

Today I am wearing Creed Original Santal. One of my female co-workers told me I smelled "delicious"
